Peyton Manning: Baker Mayfield “So Impressive” In The Pocket

October 22nd, 2024

Man, Joe might need help digging out of the sadness today after the Bucs lost Chris Godwin for the season last night and Mike Evans to what will be a lengthy hamstring issue.

It’s just hard to smile and find light.

So Joe turned to watch last night’s Manningcast with Eli Manning, Peyton Manning and Bill Belicheat.

Peyton Manning spent time lauding Baker Mayfield’s pocket movement and presence. He even took it to the extreme to have his brother Eli running through drills to diagram how Mayfield translates practice to the field.

“When you watch film of Baker Mayfield, he is so impressive in the pocket the way he moves in the pocket,” Peyton Manning began, later adding that all the pocket movement means little if the QB can’t execute with players at his feet and in his face.

Yeah, Mayfield moves extremely well in the pocket and nobody could argue with the examples Manning outlined in last night’s loss to the Ravens. The decision-making by Mayfield, however, was maddening last night.

Joe needs to heal. Those Mayfield interceptions to the Ravens were senseless. He wasn’t under pressure.

Still, Mayfield leads the NFL in touchdown passes (18) and is doing a lot of good things.

Just not in the second quarter

  2. Ufcguy32 Says:

This team won’t win a single game with Evans out. We are about to go on a 4 game losing streak. It’s going to be ugly unfortunately. This defense sucks. No way to say otherwise. And now that the offense at best puts up 17…..we won’t stand a chance. The next issue is once he’s back we have zero threats. You just double mike. Lol and baker will force the ball and it’s gonna be at least one interveption every game. Mark my words. This staff has single handedly just ruined the season last night.

  3. Architek Says:

This is Baker in a nutshell. He’s a good QB but he’s gonna turn it over when he’s trying to make plays.

  4. Allbuccedup Says:

I guess the Bucs first round pick in 2025 has to be a wide receiver!

  5. Orlando Buc Says:

Baker is a franchise QB and we need to keep building around him. Yes he made 2 bad INT’s last night. But based on what I’ve seen of him on and off the field, he’s a guy you want leading your team.

  6. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Baker was looking crisp last night!

  7. LakelandBuc Says:

Baker has thrown 5 picks in the last two games. There’s nothing impressive about that..

  8. BuckyBuc Says:

Baker is good when he is not in the position to force throwing the ball, which is exactly what he did last night. RUN THE DAMN BALL

  9. Bucs 95 Says:

Rams looking too trade cooper kup 👀

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The problem is certainly not Baker Mayfield….its our porous defense….we can’t stop the run or pass.

  11. Bobby Says:

Baker literally threw the ball right to a Ravens jersey player. Godwin was double too! Why!? He did this against Saints too.

  12. Lt. Dan Says:

Silver lining maybe? The young guns get needed experience, we win the games we should (Falcons) and maybe…just maybe steal one before the bye..? Now Todd – about your crappy defense…

  13. Bobby Says:

This season could be over by the time we get to the bye week

  14. Allen Lofton Says:

Baker’s 2 interceptions were great plays by Humpries coming off Bucs receivers to intercept Baker.
Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to your opponent. Thats 2 games in a row. Maybe Coen needs to scheme to have more space between receivers to allow for easy interceptions by your opponent.

  15. Ed Says:

The rest of this season the pressure is on Todd Bowles. He has made some really bone-headed decisions defensively but its now or never for him. If the team proceeds to give up 500 yards a game and over 35 points a game, it all comes down on his ability to get the best out of his players. He is accountable to Jason Licht who has drafted many defensive players in the past 3 or 4 years, yet Bowles isn’t getting much out of at least half of those players and we are talking about 2-4th round picks. The veterans the Bucs have been bringing in for secondary havn’t done the job over the past few years. They have always whiffed on free agent DB’s going back to Verner from Cinnci. Only Brent Grimes balled for awhile. If Bowles cannot get a middle to top 10 average defensively he is worthless to this team.

  16. Leopold Stotch Says:

2nd round and “some salary” for Kupp

  17. GoneGator Says:

Worst game I’ve seen from Baker in a while.

He’s had some bad luck on a few pics this year but last night’s were just BAD throws into coverage. Horrible. The 1st one (endzone) was the beginning of the end. No excuses.

  18. Leopold Stotch Says:

More on topic… I’m with you Joe. Just thinking about this just makes me angry and sad. This was by far, a worse loss than the Falcons. Just the sheer fact that Mike and Chris are gone.

  19. heyjude Says:

Needed this nice nugget from Peyton.

Watching Baker’s reaction to Chris getting hurt and the fans in the stands broke my heart. We are lucky to have Baker as our QB.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

Impressive INT in the end zone!

  21. MDBUCSFAN Says:

Let’s get ok the phone with Les Snead ASAP Jason

  22. MDBUCSFAN Says:

Get Kipp now. That probably makes too much sense tho

  23. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

I’ve felt like this season was going to be a dress rehearsal of sorts for next season. New guys settling in, acclimation to Coen’s system, experimentation with Coen’s system, new players getting familiar with older players, etc…..

I would have expected that Godwin would be re-signed next year in much the same fashion as Evans was this year. They’re building a long term, more sustainable team….

I still think they’ll re-sign Godwin….except now the odds of that happening just increased and the cost of doing so may very well have decreased to some degree.

In the meantime Diontae Johnson would not be a bad pickup if Carolina will move him. He’s been hinting at being unhappy there lately also.
Russell Gage is still a free agent. Maybe he’d be a viable option given his familiarity with the Bucs.

As desperate as the Browns are for draft picks, Za’Darious Smith would be worth a look. I doubt they part with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, but he’d look great in a Bucs uniform. He could be a possible replacement for David going forward as he nears retirement.

I don’t think it’ll happen but moving White to Godwin’s position and moving forward with Tucker & Irving in the backfield seems somewhat logical…..maybe add another short yardage back that can block. Not much to choose from in free agency right now tho.

So many needs, so many options…..it’s always fun to speculate

  24. White Tiger Says:

Baker is a great QB, but our protection last night was not great. When it was, he made some nice decisions, with 2, nearly 3 really bad ones. I’m not looking for perfection, everyone throws pics, but professionals don’t throw pics in the end zone, with no pressure, after looking off Bucky Irving IN THE END ZONE!?

It was also frustrating that there were some hospital balls thrown to both Godwin (before the injury) and to Otton, although I think those came after Mike Evans went down. It became a different game once Evans went out, Chris was doubled and no one repeated Shep or JMac- we’ll need each if the 3 headed monster as well – but we need to bring in a legit receiver.

I’d be ok with trading for a legit EDGE now, and maybe a corner before the trade deadline… whaddaya say Licht?

  25. Student of the Game Says:

Not one comment acknowledges that the Ravens have a good defense. They beat 4 other teams in this young season. The interception in the end zone was a good recognition move by the DB. Our guy didn’t make a move to the ball. The other interception was a lucky to hold on athletic move. 9 of 10 times that ball falls harmlessly to the ground. For me, the good news is I saw no one quit. Defense and remaining receivers have to step up.

All is not lost UFCguy. You must have never played this game past 7th grade. Teams have injuries every year. The 49ers are 3-4. Lions only loss is to the Bucs. Win next week and 1st in conference all alone. Go Bucs!

  26. Student of the Game Says:

Oh yeah, the game could have easily been different. In first half, a field goal attempt hit the goal post for a miss and Evans dropped a TD pass. Yadda yadda yadda, I know he pulled his hamstring on the play, BUT he had the ball in his hands and knew he had pulled it. Might as well go ahead and catch it. I have personal knowledge it is possible. Hurts like hell at the moment. Glory is forever.

  27. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Baker had a couple bad INTs. But don’t tell me they made the defense so sad they gave up a 16 yard screen pass TD after being gifted a holding call the play before. Guess we need to score 30 every week to have a chance

  28. Jeremy Adkins Says:

    GRAB KUPP!!!

  29. NJbucs23 Says:

24 hour rule is in effect. We can mourn and be sad all you want today. But, tomorrow is a new day and let’s move on.

This is what opportunities are for. The young practice squad WRs, here’s your chance !!

  30. Tbbucs3 Says:

Mayfields been doing his best Jameis Winston impression the last 2 weeks…..highly productive with costly turnovers

You have to wonder if he feels pressure to force the ball more when he simply cannot trust his piss poor defense?

  31. Trask To The Future Says:

As has been stated many times about last season, Baker’s stats are fool’s gold. A lot of yards & TDs when games are already over – like last night. But later in the season or end of the year people will defend Baker based on nice looking totals that don’t tell the real story.

Baker had barely 200 yards passing when the Ravens put things out of reach late in the 3rd. Yet Baker ends up with almost 400 yards passing and 3 TDs! You’d think he had a solid game looking at the box score.

Mayfield is NOT elite. Far from it.

The time has come to get Trask into some games. No reason Bowles shouldn’t have played Trask in the 4th quarter with the game out of reach.

  32. Red86 Says:

Not only Baker hold the ball too long, he didn’t scan the whole field. Staring tells the secondary where you are going. That first pick had Bucky open for a short TD run. Otten on the short out route was wide open on the second. Normally, a pass is out of a qb hand on the first step forward after the back peddle.

  33. adrnagy Says:

When mike evans got injured , baker knew evans was out for the game , he turn on the switch to win the game on his own ….lights out

  34. Bucnjim Says:

TTTF lol WTF! When our QB has to put up 40 points for the Bucs to even have a chance yes mistakes will be made for sure. Evans half speed then not at all. The only problem I had was the game plan had major flaws. He Ravens actually sat Henry for a long period because the Bucs entire game evolved around stopping the run. When they decided to pass there was no adjustment they ran around clueless the rest of the time.

  35. Bucnjim Says:

The blame Baker fans are making me laugh. Our defense has been handing out 500 yard games like Halloween candy. I think a new record was broken last night the Ravens averaged 9.5 yards per play……lol but it’s the offense’s fault.

  36. Gipper Says:

We wouldn’t be blaming Mayfield for INT’s if Evans holds on to a perfectly thrown TD or if Godwin TD isn’t called back on a holding penalty. Those occurred early in the game. The entire team made mistakes yesterday. Most egregious was a nonexistent defense that permitted Raven to move the ball at will. Most commentators here are wrong about last night onside kick limitations. Pretty sure the geniuses who repeat this noise will never own up to being wrong.

  37. Wyoming Joe Says:

WELL SAID GIPPER! Everyone seems to have forgotten about those two lost TD’s that Baker threw. I’ve stay away from this site because of all the whiners and Baker Haters pretending that they know anything about football. Those fans are poisonous!

  38. LakelandBuc Says:

5 interceptions in two games is bad, really bad

No matter how you try to spin it

You can’t get away with that in Pop Warner League

  39. LakelandBuc Says:

Bucs fans made excuses for Jameis Winston for 5 miserable years

There’s no EXCUSE for 5 Picks in 2 games

  40. churrasco Says:

Yada yada yada. More bull from the chattering class. Mr. 10-Points-In-3-Quarters-Bakey sure looked buff against that 4th quarter prevent defense, didn’t he? Yep, let’s build our future around him! At least he ain’t a stinkin’ Gator! Right, boys?

Says the football expert. The sainted Tom Brady threw 4 interceptions in a single game 6 times in his career. Go back to playing your trombone. That’s as close to a football field you ever got. By the way the 3 intercepts against NO occurred in a game that Tampa won convincingly. Last night those intercepts followed a drop TD pass by Evans and a called back TD by Godwin for a nonexistent penalty. You geniuses conveniently ignore the facts.

  42. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

When he starts to panic in the pocket he starts to remind me of Trent Doofer, so hard to watch but watch him escape sacks is amazing. Makes a lot of guys look foolish. Too bad he doesn’t have Josh Allen’s running ability

  43. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

So Gulperboi are you saying your boyfriend is that weak mentally that those things affect him so much?

  44. Scotty Mack Says:

It’s ridiculous to blame the game on Mayfield. Dude threw for 370 and the offense scored 31 points. The REAL reason they lost is that the Bucs defense is horrible this year. The defense is giving up 7 points per game more than last year whereas the offense is scoring 10.5 points more per game. Can’t blame anything on anyone on the offense this year!

  45. JustVisiting Says:

I’d take a QBing compliment from Peyton Manning over anyone who’s ever played the game. Of course, I’m not a QB, or even a real athlete, but if it happened…

  46. LANshark Says:

Yes, at times Baker believes in himself too much, and tries to force a ball into coverage where he should not. But, he actually completes a fair percentage of those (two to Otten last night, for instance). What stood out to me was that Lamar was throwing to WIDE OPEN receivers – no one within 5 years. Most of Baker’s passes, the DB was draped all over the receiver. I don’t know if the Raven’s defense is just that good, or if our receivers can’t separate, or if it’s the scheme. But we saw very few open receivers last night.

As for the O-Line, Baker SHOULD have been sacked about 6 times yesterday, but he is magic and somehow evades them. That does NOT mean our o-line blocked well.

  47. 1#bucsfan Says:

This is why I say baker isn’t elite. Im a baker fan. Love his play but man those were terrible ints. Ravens almost got 3 and they were of the Winston kind of throws. There were a couple last week that I don’t think were bakers fault against the slimy saints but one of the 3 against them was terrible like last night. Idk what he’s doing these past couple week but man get back to limiting those turnovers. Honestly we prob win if we didn’t throw those 2 picks. I know I know he thru 3 against the saints and we still won but the saints are NOT the ravens. Just can’t turn the ball over against good teams like the ravens

  48. BigMacAttack Says:

Losing our top 2 receivers is heartbreaking, but losing to the Ravens. They’re a top flight team with an excellent coach. We could have played our best and still lost to them by 1 point. Lamar is magic and they are a contender, one of a few teams who could possibly beat the chiefs, especially with Henry22 now in the stable. Losing to the Falcons was unforgivable though and we can’t lose to them again. This may be the most important game all year, or on of the. Defense has to stay focused. The backup receivers are ballers and can do the job. I’d look to the TE’s heavily to take up the slack. Above all else a smart well crafted running game plan. The one thing that could really make it difficult is our secondary missing assignments. And KJ Britt has been one big liability. I’d have called Devin White by now because he’s better than Britt and has something to prove again. No matter what, Baker has to curb the interceptions and the pass rush has to be strong and consistent.

  49. unbelievable Says:

lol Lakeland give it a rest already.

2 of those 3 against the Saints were tipped balls. Not Bakers fault. The ones last night were worse. Although the Ravens DB made a pretty smart move in the first one in the end zone. Clearly Baker just never saw him. The 2nd INT was just terrible though. Winston-esque.

That said, he’s got 18 TDs to 7 INTs this season, plus 2 more rushing TDs. I’m not gonna cry about that. You do you though.
