Morning Cup Of Joe

October 21st, 2024

Welcome to your Morning Cup of Joe, an eye-opener to help Joe’s readers ease into their busy workday with a few football links, wacky news and a pleasant distraction.

Distraction of the Day

This really flew under Joe’s radar. Apparently, NFL ratings for Monday Night Football were sinking so badly that the NFL went to Disney to sweet talk them into simulcasting the games on ABC. It seems the Monday Night Football ratings were creeping toward Amazon levels. Could it be that people are tired of all the bulls(p)it the four-letter is pumping out and have just mentally tuned the outfit out? Is it that it’s very easy to watch some 27 hours of football on the weekend before Monday hits and unless it’s a good NFL matchup, folks aren’t inclined to watch? Or maybe, just maybe, folks don’t consider flag-throwing exhibitions to be entertaining? Perhaps all of the above? Very interesting info to Joe. [PFT]

To get approved to be an NFL part-owner, Tom Brady had to promise owners he would not unretire. So unless he sells his chunk of the Raiders, Brady has played his last snap for the Bucs. [CBS]

We just can’t seem to get away from Jameis.

  2. BucVoyager Says:

I hope Jameis does what Baker did and makes the Browns keep him as the starter.

  3. heyjude Says:

    Good for Jim Rome!

Brady sure does have a lot of rules to follow in becoming part-owner to the Raiders. He was ready to commit and he does well as a sports analyst too.

I believe it about the Monday night ratings. However, tonight will be a great rating night. Go Bucs!

  4. MF Bucs Says:

James better get a TV gig when he’s done playing

  5. MF Bucs Says:

    *Jameis

  6. DoooshLaRue Says:

Oh, JayMiss will get a TV gig.
A lot of people just can’t get enough of watching idiots talk sh!t.

    The bar is that low.

  7. Lt. Dan Says:

I love me a good Monday morning squishing! Mahalo Joe’s!

  8. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

“… the NFL is not considering narrowing the uprights.”

I pulled this gem from the end of that article:
“So far this season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Chase McLaughlin has been closer to the middle of the uprights than anyone else in the league. He’s made all 11 attempts with an average of just 0.7 yards (or 2 feet, 1 inch) off center.”

  9. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

    “Jameis Winston lashes out…”
    .
    .

Jameis Winston declared that he is a “man of increase.” What does that even mean? LOL

  10. D-Rome Says:

    Monday Night Football

I had no idea ratings were that bad. I think the Aikman-Buck tandem is the best they’ve had in years. I can’t get ABC over the air and I don’t have cable so I stream the game via NFL+. It was a mistake to broadcast the games on cable only and clearly they’re paying for it.

    Jameis Winston

My feelings on Jameis as the Bucs starting QB during the lost decade aside, Jameis should absolutely be the starter on the Browns. I think it’s disgraceful that he’s not. Jameis currently gives the Browns the best chance to win football games. It’s as if Browns leadership want to make sure the team continues to struggle to justify the absolute failure of the Watson trade. That’s the only reason why they didn’t bring Joe Flacco back who, by the way, is better than Anthony Richardson as well.

  11. Joe Says:

Oh, JayMiss will get a TV gig.

Really doubt that, though he has the personality for that.

    Jameis is poison to advertisers.

  12. We Make Custom Teez Says:

@Joe, so Jamies is more poisonous to advertisers than Vick, who was convicted of a crime, or Ray Lewis, who was part of a murder? I have nothing against them; I’m all for second chances. I do not understand why Winston still gets so much flack for allegations from 10 years ago.

  13. We Make Custom Teez Says:

@Hunter’s Crack Pipe lay of the crack and maybe it will help you understand basic words 😂😂

  14. Joe Says:

@Joe, so Jamies is more poisonous to advertisers than Vick, who was convicted of a crime, or Ray Lewis,

Yeah. This may come as a surprise, but folks tend to value women (allegedly) over dogs. Besides, Vick was wildly popular before his dog hassles. Jameis was never remotely as popular as Vick.

And Vick did his time and sort of rehabbed his image.

Ray Lewis, somehow, overcame that double-murder. It helped that he was one of the best to ever play his position. That tends to squash a poor history. Time heals all wounds so long as you aren’t alleged to have hassles like Jameis had.

  15. Josh Says:

The lack of viewers can be attributed to where the game is being shown. Look at the numbers: Peacock, Amazon, ESPN+, and any games not available for free on local channels struggle with ratings. In contrast, games broadcast on public channels consistently achieve nearly record-breaking viewership, regardless of the teams playing.

  16. Jay Buc Says:

Gee, an electric emergency vehicle burns down a fire station. another reason not to buy one.

  17. Leighroy Says:

I’m not buying the whole MNF ratings are down narrative. All of the “facts” you can read at espnpressroom indicate ratings were up 30% last year, and various weeks have achieved high viewership milestones, including those NOT simulcast on ABC, that seemingly refute this idea.

I’d have to see some independent research to make a call, but I’m not taking Mike Florio’s opening line at face value without something to back it up, when I can see data from ESPN that seemingly refutes it.

I think owners are just being greedier…. shocking isn’t it?

  18. GP Says:

I cut the cable not too long ago and was planning to go to Hooters for the game. Still might.

  19. Joe Says:

All of the “facts” you can read at espnpressroom indicate ratings were up 30% last year

This is an example of what Joe learned in high school: You can twist numbers any way you want to prove whatever point you want to make.

LOL “Facts.” You really believe the four-letter’s marketing department would type one word about lower ratings?

Here is a story from an independent site that sort of backs up Florio’s intel.
