Mike Evans Chasing Jerry Rice In Another NFL Mark

October 5th, 2024

Numbers keep rolling in.

When your name keeps popping up in the same paragraph as the great Jerry Rice, you know you’re doing something right.

And that’s the case with Mike Evans. He has been doing many things right for years. That’s why he will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday.

So on Thursday night in Atlanta, when the Bucs decided to use their best receiver — apparently he was stricken with COVID in the second half and the Bucs didn’t want him to infect the football — Evans hauled in two touchdown passes. It was the second time Evans had at least two touchdown catches in the same game.

Evans’ second touchdown gave him 12 TD receptions against the Dixie Chicks. He trails only Jerry Rice (25) for touchdown catches against Atlanta.

Joe doesn’t think Evans will catch Rice in that one. But Evans still has a shot of tying Rice for most consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons.

Evans is 28 percent of the way to his 11th straight season of 1,000 receiving yards which would tie Rice, though Evans is only on pace for 938 yards this season through five games. Evans has 12 more games to get the 724 yards he needs to hit 1,000 again.

I hope he’s chasing Jerry Rice 3 Super Bowl rings!

Mike looks a little dinged up to me.

I think he IS actually a little dinged up. He will benefit yugely from the extra time off as will Vea and some of the other walking wounded.

I hope he’s healthy for N.O. because I do not want to see Marshon trash talking!

Second half playcalling was not great.

if mike plays “long game”…and i hope he does, he has a legit shot to unseat moss, owens and fitzgerald…

thus putting him in the #2 all time receiving yards spot behind only jerry rice…

rice is too far ahead for mike to ever catch him…

mike would have to literally pull a TB12 and play forever to do that…

but if mike plays around with the 1k number for a few more seasons and then is ok having a couple 700-750 yard type seasons as more of a possession guy at the end of his career, he will be right there, somewhere between #2 and #5 all time…with a realistic shot at passing fitzgerald…

i’ve pulled up the numbers…mike can do it with relative healthy seasons and the idea to play long game, and rocking for like another 5 years after this…

he can do it…and being around tom, and lebron, he might just go for it…you never know – it’s up to him

don’t sleep…after this season mike should probably be around 20th all time…

and after next year with 1k more yards he will be floating in the 10th to 12th spot all time…

and one more 1k yard season after that and he’s floating around at #6-ish, and about to unseat tony gonzalez…

and if he rocks another year after that he’s in the number 4 spot, or possibly the number 3 ahead of owens…

then if he hangs around a little longer he can can unseat fitzgerald…

    he’s gonna need about another 5 seasons…

    the possibility is really there

With Todd speaking out of both sides of his mouth – “need to get Mike the ball more” to totally shutting down the offense in the second half.

Mike probably has his first year of no 1000 yards thanks Re – Todd the Turtle. But at least Todd gives up enough yards passing to make sure opposing receivers hit the mark.

Hopefully we get him 1000 in the next 11 games. We don’t need a 17 game asterisk on this streak. He will have a couple big games coming. The Bucs are showing too many weapons for him to garner too much extra attention. We just have to know when to take advantage.

  9. unbelievable Says:

That’s about 60 yards per game.

Should be easily attainable if we stop shutting down our offense in the 2nd half every week. Easier said that done with Softserve Bowles though.
