Liam Coen To Baker Mayfield: Just Be You

October 25th, 2024

Be yourself.

It is very understandable that a guy with a drive to win like Baker Mayfield might get ahead of his skis in the coming weeks.

Mayfield, in theory, could see how the Bucs lost two of the best receivers in the game and then think he has to compensate by playing above and beyond.

Yesterday, Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen said that is not necessary. In so many words, Coen said Mayfield only needs to be Mayfield, not Superman.

“[What we need] especially now is to really kind of go back to fundamentals and basics and reads and trusting – I don‘t think he really as an issue trusting people,” Coen said. “He’s going to throw it to these guys. I don’t think that’s ever going to be an issue, but he doesn’t have to do anything more then what we’re asking him to do, stay within the scheme, stay within, play fast, and we have to take care of the football obviously.”

So who becomes Mayfield’s favorite target now that Evans is out for about a month and Godwin is gone for the regular season? Joe is going to guess three guys.

1. Sterling Shepard. He’s a veteran and Mayfield and Shepard have a connection from their days back in Oklahoma. It was Mayfield, after all, who coaxed the veteran Shepard off the couch to give the NFL another try. There’s a bond there.

2. Cade Otton. This guy make not be Ozzie Newsome or foot-rubbing Rob Gronkowski or even Jimmie Giles. But Otton is dependable. And boy, on Monday night, did he ever get the snot knocked out of him by Crows defenders. But he kept on bouncing back. Resilience!

3. Rachaad White. Mayfield has been throwing often to White since Mayfield arrived in Tampa last season. Joe is confident Mayfield trusts White.

So Mayfield has receivers he had a history of success with.

Joe doesn’t think the issue will be Mayfield. The aforementioned three, and others, won’t be single-covered as much as they were. There’s no more Godwin and Evans (for now) for defenses to double.

3 gr8 receivers n Baker will Bake, Go Bucs

  2. Steven #55 Says:

The defence needs to start holding teams to less than 20pts or it doesnt matter what we do

  3. RVATom Says:

    Steven#55 gets it

  4. LVMYBUCS Says:

    @Steven#55 EXACTLY!

Coen is correct. Yes, all three guys sound like a good plan for Baker. Just like what was said by Coen on another post on the blog is that he does want to make a wrinkle for the Falcons this Sunday since they just played them. Mix it up while protecting Baker in the pocket.

Agree with Steven#55 too. Defense needs to be there strong.

  6. Leopold Stotch Says:

Agreed with above. Offense, while may not be as electric shouldn’t be a problem. The defense, however, has regressed to completely unacceptable levels. And needs to step up.

  7. JerkingCircleofEpileptics Says:

Baker can “be who he is.” Unfortunately, that won’t translate to wins due to the fact that the defense is terrible.

  8. Marky Mark Says:

When OBJ went down in 2020 Baker got better because he did not feel the pressure to force it into a star. Last year Baker felt the pressure to get evans his 1000 and had to deal with godwins wife griping. Now he can just hut the open man or tuck and run.

Zyn is derived from tobacco, not synthetic nicotine:

    Zyn ingredients
Zyn contains a powdered nicotine salt derived from commercial tobacco leaves, along with fillers, sweeteners, flavorings, and other food-grade ingredients.

Finally we may see what Trask can do if Baker suspended.

  10. Bucnjim Says:

Mayfield and the offense will get us 28 even without our two best receivers. We may not be able to shut anyone down, but can we at least get back to keeping teams out of the end-zone and holding them to field goals.

  11. Bojim Says:

White will get more than a few passes thrown his way Sunday.

  12. Razor Ramone Says:

Bucky and Tucker RBs 1a & 1b White in the slot.

  13. D Cone Says:

Give him the ball on Monday at his own 25 with 1:43 left, no time outs, down two scores and hope/expect him to pull something miraculous out. Following Sunday down two of his weapons, the same porous defense for support and tell him to be himself. Don’t try to do too much. Right. Last time you let Baker bake Godwin got cooked and Otton damn near broke his neck.

Perhaps if they are down 3 scores into the 4th quarter they will treat the remainder like a scrimmage, get a good controlled drive or two under their belts and build on that for the next contest.

Leave Baker alone in the kitchen and throws go high and erratic and you will be down a TE too going in the Kansas City Game.

  14. Architek Says:

    Depressing.

  15. Swampy Says:

Football mirrors life. The struggle never ends but sometimes it’s harder than usual. That’s where the Bucs are now. The loss to the Falcons was tough because we were the better team. Now we’re not because of a depleted passing game. This makes me look forward to Sunday more, not less. A victory will be much sweeter.

  16. Gipper Says:

See NFL fined Roquan Smith for illegal hip drop tackle on Chris Godwin. The fine was around $17,000. The cowards is the NFL should suspend Roquan Smith for the same length of time CG will be out. That tackle was just what the NFL had in mind when they made those tackles illegal. It is a dirty play designed to injure ankles and legs of ball carrier. Really surprised with all the word wasted on Bowles coaching and Mayfield’s 2 INT’s that few on this blog mentioned what was clearly an illegal and harmul tackle designed to injure an opponent.

  17. MJ Says:

he has to stick those 3 guys
Jalen will get him picked off
    here come the INTS
