Liam Coen Agrees With Zyon McCollum That Escaping Hurricane Milton Can Only Help Bucs
October 11th, 2024For a young player and a first-year starter, Joe was so impressed with the intelligent, winning-attitude words of Bucs cornerback Zyon McCollum on Wednesday from New Orleans.
The Bucs bugged out on Tuesday to escape Hurricane Milton. The football staff set up headquarters at a team hotel and the Bucs are practicing at Tulane University.
McCollum didn’t want to hear any excuses the team may have for not winning Sunday related to dodging the storm. In fact, McCollum said evacuating gives the Bucs more reasons to win.
Joe loves that winning attitude! Adapt, adjust, overcome.
Speaking yesterday, Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen wholeheartedly agreed with McCollum.
“The guys were locked in, focused, you know, there’s a good energy actually,” Coen said about the vibe around Bucs practices and the team hotel. “I would say that Zyon [McCollum] is probably correct when he says that sometimes, these moments, these times can bring a team together.
“When you’re on the road and it’s all of us together – our families, our players, our coaches, our staff – we’re all we have right now, so we’re all together, we’re all in this thing together.”
Joe groaned hearing how the team was considering leaving town early. Joe thought now the team had all sorts of built-in excuses to lose. Given how the Bucs have played inconsistent ball the past three weeks, including sleepwalking through the Denver loss so bad that Lavonte David had to rip his teammates for half-arsing it, Joe thought mental cracks in the team were apparent — and uprooting and flying out of state for a week would just widen that crack.
It seems the focused mentality of McCollum is contagious.

Did the precious bend over and break defense make it out of Tampa? That is a unique attribute of the current regime. Bucs wouldn’t have an identity without it.

I remember when people in Tampa weren’t so scared of hurricanes. Power or phones out for a day. Flooding that never got into our houses. Hurricane parties. Waterskiing down Bayshore Blvd. Times have changed.

@bojim you probably gave Joe a headline for Sunday – “Rattling Rattler”

I just hope the Bucs come out aggressive on both offense and defense, set the tone. I thought it was a good move by Sean Payton in the Denver game when they won the opening coin toss and said we’ll take the ball, I was like what!? Teams always defer so they get that precious second half kickoff, but they marched right down the field and scored. Now Baker and the Bucs answered and also scored, but we did absolutely nothing with that second half kickoff. I just think every now and then it sends a message that, hey we’re coming for you we’re ready to go! I don’t think Bowles will ever not defer if he wins the opening toss , but I’d love to see it! On D they got to put pressure on this rookie QB, he’s got a good arm and if he has time and we play that soft Zone he’ll complete passes. I like to see Vita switched out to the end position just to throw them off every now and then and get a stand up running start. That’s a nice change up! Play man cover, w. Safety over the top, and mix up the blitzers, keep the rookie QB nervous. And keep a DB on Kamara, I think they’ll come to him a lot out of the backfield, for catch and run. Hope this is a good bounce back game for us.. Go Bucs!!
