Leverage Wins All The Time, Just Ask Calijah Kancey

October 16th, 2024

Beasting in first game.

Here’s a good example of why coaches who work in the trenches preach handwork.

When Bucs defensive tackle Calijah Kancey started on Sunday in New Orleans, Joe figured some how, some way, his buddy Brian Baldinger would find a way to highlight Kancey on his Twitter breakdowns.

Sure enough, Baldinger did just that. And the clip would have made Joe’s old football coach smile.

Baldinger highlighted how Kancey bullrushed his way into the slimy Saints backfield — despite Kancey giving up 50 pounds.

As former Bucs linebacker Scot Brantley once told Joe, “It’s all about leverage.”

Joe’s old high school coach used to say size and weight didn’t matter if you could get leverage. The best leverage was getting under a guy’s neck, preferably in his upper chest between the shoulders. Even better if you could get under his pads. That throws off a guy’s weight. And once you do that, you own him. He’s done.

Kancey’s move in this clip is exactly how Joe’s coach used to teach this: Get both hands in the upper chest. The dude will be finished. You’ll have him on his heels.

(Joe’s old coach even taught a trick on how to get knuckles under a guy’s breastplate of his shoulder pads to perform this task. It’s the little things, man.)

Ah, the memories that flow back for Joe watching this Kancey clip.

Joe was asked in the wake of the win over the slimy Saints how Kancey looked. Joe thought Kancey was a tad rusty, which is to be expected. This was his first game of the season.

Give Kancey a week or two to get back into the flow and watch the eff out, folks.

For sure, same principle with wrestling. That’s why I didn’t mind wrestling guys taller than me. I was already lower than them, it was easier to grab them. Anyway, I agree with the rust part, he’ll be looking good in another week or two. Glad most of our guys are healthy during then tough patch of the schedule. We’ll need all hands on deck

Can’t wait to see him dropping into deep middle zone pass coverage. Gotta keep Lamar confused.

I believe you misunderstood Scot, Joe..he said it’s all about the beverage!!

  4. LVMYBUCS Says:

BUM!!! Should have traded him as well. “Dean has yet to play a full regular season during his six-year NFL career”

  5. BuckyBuc Says:

Kancey is a game changer when on the field.

Glad to see him back. Hope he stays healthy because he is such a hard worker and a stud on the field. He was getting held all day Sunday and still had a sack (almost two) and two TFL’s. He could lead the Bucs in both category’s this year. Game changer.

  7. Kenton Smith Says:

    Dave Pear that’s funny!

If Logan Hall can improve on his technique, then we could have one of the better D lines with Vita Vea, Hall and Kancey.

So glad that Kancey is back! Loved Kancey skipping away afterwards. Perfectly done!

Noticed that LVD, the Chairman of the Defense, was in that scrum, too. Kancey better be set for Monday night. Here’s to Whitehead and AWJ getting pick 6s, too.

Who’s Kancey? Does he play for the Bucs?

    I Googled it. He a part-time employee.

Kansey had quite a few good plays Sunday from what I saw. As far as durability, after he came back last year he made it through the rest of the season. Its not so soul-sucking hot and muggy anymore. Might even have a few chilly days.
