Jamel Dean Avoided Serious Injury

October 17th, 2024

Bucs fans saw their No. 1 (?) cornerback leave Sunday’s game in the first quarter with a nasty looking injury.

Jamel Dean’s right leg/ankle bent awkwardly and Joe wasn’t sure what happened. Undrafted rookie Tyrek Funderburk made his NFL debut in place of Dean and was solid enough to contain a depleted Saints passing attack.

Dean told Joe after the game in the locker room that he didn’t think the injury was anything serious, but Joe was skeptical.

Today, however, Dean is on the practice field.  Whatever you think of Dean, that’s a damn good thing.

The first official Bucs injury report of the week will be issued this afternoon. Dean may have been limited in practice today, but just being out there confirms to Joe that Dean avoided anything serious.

  1. BillyBucco Says:

If he is still capable of playing Great football, we will need it this week. I miss the days of Jamel jumping an out route vs Aaron Rodgers for a pick six.

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

This is conflicting. Other Bucs media people have said Dean missed practice and has a multi week injury. Which one is it?

  3. Booger Says:

    Buc-n-Tuck and Funderburk

  4. Bucsfan81 Says:

Dean is not the number 1 corner on this team. Getting paid like one but Mccollum is the number 1 CB on this team.

  5. Booger Says:

Well, looks like someone just stole my ‘fake’ handle LoL… Guess I better go back to using my old original (real) name Hahah.

  6. Baker Bowl Says:

Still can’t figure out if I enjoy watching Jamel Dean.

  7. Ds Says:

Dean always hurt can’t play man hold he didn’t get super hurt

  8. Pewter Power Says:

2-3 round will be cornerback next year. Dean plays 10 yards off the receiver and still gets hurt

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Jamel’s a big corner (6’1″ & 206 lbs) who’s a very sure tackler (his Missed Tackle Rate this year is 4.4%; McCollum sits at 10.0%, Izien at 14.3% and Tykee at 5.7%). He’s also allowed 0 TDs this year (McCollum has allowed 3 TDs, Izien 0 TDs & Tykee 2 TDs). So ya, I’m glad Jamel is OK after missing half of the New Orleans game. At the same time, impressed with how well Funderburk played for a rookie coming off the bench.

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

Through 6 games I’d say this is someone we may need to move on from and re allocate the resources.

Hopefully he can get back to more aggressive style coverage sooner than later. He seems to do better pressing vs playing off.

  11. Don’t make a scene 35 Says:

The Dean bashing makes some of you look like idiots!
Talk to me at end of the year !

If your a solid 4 yr DB with a superbowl ring you and u get second contract with Licht with Bowles blessing obviously, then you are good !

    Layoff my guy

Glad he’s ok we gonna need his tackling and coverage Monday night

  12. Defense Rules Says:

However, he led the team in tackles until his injury, and he’s also allowed a 70.7% completion rate, the highest of his career (that’s not a good thing either). Looks like he’s noticeably slower this year than in years past for some reason.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Lord C … Far as ‘playing off’ goes, I think he’s hurting & right now doesn’t have the acceleration to recover quickly when he falls behind. Even Bowles at one point said that he needs to tighten up coverage somewhat. Maybe Jamel’s being a little TOO cautious.

  14. Architek Says:

I don’t wish injury on anyone but I also can’t deny that I don’t like seeing him on the field!!

  15. Ed Says:

Dean doesn’t look fluid at all. I would like him to show that he can stay with Flowers Monday night. Raven offense is a 3 headed monster, Jackson, Henry and Andrews. Better hold down that offense and it all starts with Jackson, he has to be contained because pressures won’t effect him as he is so good at running.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

    Dean’s made of glass!

  17. LVMYBUCS Says:

Dean a bum he has not played a full season since he entered the NFL cant wait until we trade his as. he has dropped more interception then he has made and that Falcons game was the last straw for me

  18. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Dean doesn’t look fluid at all.

He isn’t. He looks like a Derrick Henry decided to play cornerback. He’s not a natural at all at corner, but he is a very good athlete and has been coached up pretty well. I’m happy enough with him.

But Zyon is a pure corner. An outstanding athlete and simply a natural at the position. He’s going to be an All-Pro at some point.

  19. Boss Says:

Dean will get back ASAP before a rook takes his job for 1/10 the $$

  20. Saskbucs Says:

Comical how he got injured there. Ran towards the ball carrier, slowed to almost a dead stop trying not to hurt himself, then barely make the tackle falling backwards over your feet and tweaking the hammy.

Maybe lean in there with the shoulder Dean and not be scared next time! Play scared, get hurt.

  21. Simeon4HOF Says:

    Tolerate till replace

  22. Boss Says:

He has never been a hitter or fluid. He has the size, speed and coaching though.

Would be a loss not to have him. I can say Zy is an upgrade-impressed!

  23. Dave Pear Says:

Glad he’s not injured. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t suck. He does.

  24. First Name Greatest Says:

I have zero expectations for Dean as a player. Dude is paid ALOT and does little. Might be the passive pass defense scheme or Dean might just be a dud

  25. Teflon Don Says:

He was in perfect position to make a bone crushing tackle and he’s the one who ends up getting hurt smh. It just seems like Dean is here for the check. Haven’t seen him make a meaningful play since the pick 6 against the packers and that was a couple seasons ago. Hasn’t shown much growth in his game either. I’m tired of him at this point

  26. adam from ny Says:

just because zman is playing lights out football…
(and somewhere some pundit called him the best corner in the league rn)

    doesn’t mean we don’t need jamel dean…

get it straight, we need jamel dean badly, and playing good football…

funderfunk has a lot of kinks to work out and is a low salary project at this point…

there are enough issue in the middle of the field rn, so 2 good corners is a must…

we’ve gotta play some really good teams in these weeks running up to the bye…

(yeah john travolta moves his hips better than jamel dean on the dance floor)

  27. Larrd Says:

Bowles loves Funderburk but I think he gave up a TD as soon as he got in there. It will be good for him to get some playing time.

  28. Don’t make a scene 35 Says:

27 is fun to watch develop in front of our eyes
I love me some Zyon McCollum and he’s holding it down on that side !
Great kid too ! What a great draft pick Bucs !!
But if we’re gonna get special on Defense like we have been in the past
Then we need Jamel Dean playing like he is capable of
Bowles not counting on Dean to break Rhonde Barber’s int record
But he’s counting on Dean to do some things down the stretch this year I bet

  29. unbelievable Says:

Funderburk played decent after getting juked out of his shoes on that touchdown pass.

(Btw does anyone else want to call him “Thunderfunk” instead? No, just me?)

But our pass rush also started to show up after that, which we all know is a massive help to the secondary. Lamar and the Ravens ain’t no Spencer Rattler in his first start though…

  30. Str8Bucin Says:

    J. Dean has shown his value by helping the younger guys step up and become one of the best secondaries we’ve had since our first Super Bowl run. Let’s hope he’s able to play Monday Night so Zyon doesn’t have to travel with Zay. We will need all hands on deck for Lamar “Action” Jackson. Our frontline is finally coming together, and our LBs are stellar as usual, so our back end needs Dean to continue the success we have been having.

  31. Blows sux Says:

Not worth the money he’s paid. He gets “hurt” every season without fail. I’ve made comments in various places the last couple of seasons that Dean is due for an injury and sure enough a week later he’s missing games. To the best of my knowledge he’s never played a full season. Get rid of him and bring in a hungry talented kid for a fraction of the money who will play a full season. He’s too easy to predict when he’ll be missing games

  32. Buc2Blame Says:

He avoided a serious injury because there never was one. Carlton Davis taught him how to fake injuries when they get embarrassed or messes up a coverage.

  33. JimBobBuc Says:

I wasn’t that impressed by Thunder Funk but he was probably told to play super soft to avoid big plays. Izzy coming back any time soon?

  34. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

I guess he’s a healthy body but I really don’t feel good with him back there every time he makes a taco he gets hurt and he gets beat a lot without getting interceptions like I feel like we overpaid for him and Carlton. Could have not said it better but to blame

  35. Dave Pear Says:

Deadwood, LOL, I know it was an autocorrect, but the statement is more accurate saying Dean makes tacos back there instead of playing CB. Well done.

  36. garro Says:

Used to have a guy on my team. Great player. He used to get hurt alot though and limp off dramatically. Only to return miraculously just as dramatically.

Sound familiar? Starting to remind me of old Tyrone. Just saying…

    Go Bucs!

  37. Eckwood Says:

Good player , not near aggressive enough to compliment his skill set ……. Can get injured getting out of bed .

  38. Vancouver Buc Says:
