Jadeveon Clowney And The Bucs
October 30th, 2024How much do the Bucs need serious edge rush help?
It’s so desperate, Joe even heard ultimate Bucs homer radio broadcaster T.J. Rives urge a Tampa Bay move at the trade deadline for edge rush help on his show at Buccaneers.com.
One guy who might be better than Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is Panthers edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney.
Longtime NFL writer Mike Jones, now of TheAthletic.com, thinks Clowney is on the trade block before Tuesday’s deadline.
The 31-year-old Clowney’s skills are being wasted in Carolina, where the Panthers rank among the worst in the league on defense. A year after tying a career high with 9 1/2 sacks for the Baltimore Ravens, Clowney has only one sack for Carolina. Clowney still has something left in the tank and can help a team in the pass-rushing department. Part of the problem is how bad the Panthers are against the run. Opponents are taking advantage and running at Clowney, who at this stage in his career seems less than enthusiastic about serving as a run stopper. Clowney is believed to prefer an exit, and given the opportunity to stockpile picks for their talent-depleted roster, the Panthers will probably oblige.
So, if Jones is accurate, Clowney wants out and hasn’t been eager to play the run. That’s not the greatest combination. He’ll also be due about $5 million for the remainder of this season.
After watching Bucs edge rushers struggle through eight games, would Joe try to land Clowney? Joe certainly would look deeply into it. Clowney did have 9 1/2 sacks for the Ravens last season and unlike Randy Gregory, Clowney shows up for work.
Somewhat interesting is Clowney being under a contract for next season with little guaranteed money.
Perhaps there’s a role player on the Bucs that Panthers head coach Dave Canales covets? Maybe Ko Kieft or Rakim Jarrett? Joe can’t see Clowney commanding much more than a fifth-round draft pick.
October 30th, 2024 at 2:27 pm
Nah, Clowney is almost done BUT..we should be putting out a feeler with Lynch and the 49ers on Nick Bosa. He won’t be there much longer. San Fran is too liberal. We don’t care about that. We just want a big-time baller like Bosa. Might be worth a try aye?
October 30th, 2024 at 2:27 pm
But…. can he drop back in coverage.
October 30th, 2024 at 2:28 pm
I’d rather have Za’Daruis Smith. He has 5 sacks so far this year compared to Clowneys 1
October 30th, 2024 at 2:29 pm
no
October 30th, 2024 at 2:29 pm
I wish the Bucs would go get Clowney. I doubt that it happens. Jason & Todd are going down with there own guys I believe.
October 30th, 2024 at 2:35 pm
As someone who has followed Clowney his entire football career, I’d say his best days are behind him. I wanted him earlier in FA two years ago but he wasn’t worth the 20 mil he was asking for. With that being said, when motivated to play, he’s still better than JTS. And yes, he can drop back in coverage, but we need him rushing passer all the time. I’m for it. A 5th and JTS. Another thing, since JTS is always dropping back in coverage, why not let him play ILB on passing downs? He’s not getting home to the QB anyways. Just a thought.
October 30th, 2024 at 2:35 pm
We can wish for a trade but Licht ain’t gunna do it
October 30th, 2024 at 2:38 pm
When was the last time the Bucs made an in season trade? Gronk is the closest thing to it and that was primarily during the off season. Before that, someone refresh my memory
October 30th, 2024 at 2:41 pm
Just wondering – is it Licht just refusing to acquire players or is Licht asking Bowles if he wants him to go after anyone and Bowles is answering ‘nah, we’re good – I like “my guys”‘. Honest question. The way the press conferences have sounded, it sounds like the latter, but then again Licht rarely talks to the press in season.
October 30th, 2024 at 2:44 pm
I feel like I need to write an article for Joe. Don’t expect a bucs trade for an edge defender and just exchange the wr for edge defenders on the bucs roster. They are not a player away they are multiple players away they won’t trade for anyone next. Go bucs
October 30th, 2024 at 2:50 pm
The last thing the Panthers will do is trade with the Bucs! They’ll say sure give us a second rounder.
October 30th, 2024 at 2:54 pm
Mike Edwards is available – should be basically free or pretty close to it. While safety isn’t the biggest area of concern, if you had another safety you could use Winfield at corner. Not my favorite thing, but right now you’re starting (STARTING) a 6th string DB at corner, and the depth only gets worse from there.
But hey, next man up.
The Bucs made the big move at punter, fans expecting more than that, they’re just loco.
October 30th, 2024 at 2:58 pm
I know there’s more to football than stats, but Clowney has the same number of sacks as JTS this year.
October 30th, 2024 at 3:01 pm
Throw enough shi* at the wall and something is bound to stick?? Right???
We have the personnel. They are playing soft and safe and need to toughen up
October 30th, 2024 at 3:04 pm
Shaq
October 30th, 2024 at 3:14 pm
Unless it’s for peanuts bucs will not make a move. It’s not their year
October 30th, 2024 at 3:22 pm
If players like Vi Jones have been in the system for 2 years and still “getting caught up to speed” what makes you think a player from another team can come in and contribute right away?
Any defenseman will have to go through 4 years of Bowles U before they can step on the field.
October 30th, 2024 at 3:24 pm
Licht knows this defense needs an edge, mlb, and cb. Too many holes to make a run this year.
October 30th, 2024 at 3:27 pm
Bowles will never acquire a defensive end/ OLB that doesn’t play the run. No matter how cheap they are. Probably why Jose R hasn’t played
October 30th, 2024 at 3:28 pm
Bowles hangs his hat on stopping the run being Job #1. We’re doing a crappy job of that right now with the players we have. So WHY would the Bucs want to add someone to their defense ‘who at this stage in his career seems less than enthusiastic about serving as a run stopper’?
Can anyone really see Bowles saying to Licht … ‘Jason, you’ve gotta get Clowney for us. He’s only got 1 sack so far this year, but on the positive side he hates playing the run’. Ya right.
IF JL actually agrees to add ANYONE, even a new water boy, PLEASE make it be an ILB to replace KJ Britt. And IF JL is willing to go far beyond that, PLEASE make it someone (anyone) who can pressure opposing QBs while still playing the run. Don’t personally care if it’s a beastly DT or a premier Edge; let’s just improve this defense for not just this year, but for years to come.
October 30th, 2024 at 3:28 pm
C’mon folks. We don’t need to go knocking on the door of the Old Folks Home to get players. We got players on the roster that can be developed. What about Ramirez? Wasn’t he pretty good at pass rush? Thinking less drop back with the OLB’s and more direct rush would help. Which means they’re using the OLB’s to cover for deficient corners maybe?
October 30th, 2024 at 3:30 pm
Kyle Trask for Clowney done deal. I agree the defense needs major help. It is going to take a lot more than trading for one player to help this defense though. KJ Britt is a huge liability at this point. Plus we need a DB along with edge rusher.
October 30th, 2024 at 3:31 pm
Why don’t we dig up Reggie White? He probably has more gas left in the tank then Clowney.
October 30th, 2024 at 3:41 pm
Hodad … Was just thinking that adding a player named Clowney is just asking for trouble with Bucs fans. I mean most can’t (or refuse to) spell Bowles correctly. Can you imagine what’d happen to Clowney?
October 30th, 2024 at 4:01 pm
@DR – the only player that fits your description for the future is Azeez OJulari (24 years old) five sacks in three games. Thibideaux and Burns were healthy I think he’d have already been dealt to someone.
October 30th, 2024 at 4:02 pm
I’m fairly confident JL has been told that young talent and future draft capital will not be used to bolster this years team. Ownership has seen all they need to see over the last three years to make an informed decision on Bowles ability to field an above average contender. If the Bucs are to lure a competent head coach to Tampa, cap room and draft capital are a must. There is a decent foundation here and JL knows what to do. Six more weeks and this will all be over.
October 30th, 2024 at 4:03 pm
I think Josh Allen on the Jags ,, he’s always making plays when I’m forced to watch the jags
October 30th, 2024 at 4:06 pm
Lmao couch Game think we are going to get Nick Bosa, Josh Allen and such. Not happening. Doesn’t matter how liberal SF is they are not going to let one of the premier defensive ends in the league go because he is a MAGA supporter let’s be real folks. Josh Allen just got paid and I’m not sure if we could take in his contract without sacrificing resigning some of our key free agents after the season. Definitely would be surprising to see us land a big name player. More than likely would be someone like clowney
October 30th, 2024 at 4:11 pm
Would Carolina deal in the division?
October 30th, 2024 at 4:18 pm
Joe, I like it. But, if he can’t drop in to pass coverage and cover guys like Deebo Samuel or Xavier Worthy who are coming up on our schedule, he is no use to us.
Right Coach Communication / Concentration Issues??
P.S….Note to Joe, Keep Ira’s hand away from the mute button on the podcast.
That shorter version was not acceptable on the ride home yesterday. Thank god Ira does not have his fingers on the launch buttons that could start World War 3.
October 30th, 2024 at 4:27 pm
There were better options earlier and they didn’t cost much. I doubt we do anything.
October 30th, 2024 at 4:29 pm
Nope
October 30th, 2024 at 4:30 pm
LOL @ thinking the Niners are letting Bosa walk, even if he’s a POS. If you can ball, teams don’t really care what else you do, no matter where they’re located.
On Clowney, I would have said maybe if he was a FA… But you can’t trade draft picks for a so-so player who is already making business decisions to only do his job when he wants to.

…..
One of the most ridiculous comments I have seen on here. If a head coaching job comes up there will be plenty in line for the job, both competent and incompetent.
October 30th, 2024 at 4:41 pm
Bowles will figure out a way to do just good enough to keep his job,, 8-8 going into the last week w a chance to make playoffs
October 30th, 2024 at 4:45 pm
We will see if standing “pat” was the right move for this team by the time these next two games are played. We have weaknesses all over the place, more on defense duh. We spent a fortune signing players offensively last year. We’ll draft defense next spring and that’ll help. There’s always somebody tougher than you. We could replace 22 spots on the team with more gifted players. But this fledgling team, key word team ( not superstars at 22 positions) is learning what it takes to be successful. Why screw it up bringing in someone who hasn’t been a part of it. This team we have is hungry Now! It’s been a rocky road but starting Monday I think we’re gonna be in overdrive on a smooth highway. I’m 100 percent behind standing “pat”. We’re gonna see alot come Monday.
October 30th, 2024 at 4:47 pm
It’s not as if SHAQ or JPP did not work out for them. Not sure why they’re hell-bent on sticking with the draft when it comes to an edge rusher instead of getting a proven commodity.
There has been a couple out there the last two years that they could have traded for
October 30th, 2024 at 4:53 pm
Clean like some Downy
Grind for that sack like Jadeveon Clowney
October 30th, 2024 at 4:54 pm
Desperate times
Let’s go!
October 30th, 2024 at 4:56 pm
No to Clowney. He’s many years past his prime and wouldn’t be much, if any, help over what we have now.
Bosa is a good player BUT he’s an idiot and a prick AND most importantly SF ain’t turning him lose.
Next idea 💡?
October 30th, 2024 at 5:06 pm
Soooo…. We want Clowney only to watch Bowles drop him in coverage?! The defensive issues is a Todd Bowles issue.
October 30th, 2024 at 5:09 pm
Lol, Seahawks hosting Randy Gregory
October 30th, 2024 at 5:26 pm
Trade for a coach. Worked with Gruden.
Bowles is hot garbage. He didn’t earn his job.
It was given to him for all the wrong reasons.
Those same reasons are keeping him employed for now.
October 30th, 2024 at 5:31 pm
Jadeveon Clowney has injury issues and horrible results this year. NO.
October 30th, 2024 at 5:34 pm
Ndamakong Suh has not retired and worked out with Vita Vea during the off season. Suh can make a difference-sign him and you immediately get better against the run and pass.
October 30th, 2024 at 5:42 pm
Joe, I hear the desperation in your voice. If he doesn’t want to play run support, how will he feel in coverage?
October 30th, 2024 at 5:53 pm
I don’t know why we as fans EVER have these discussions….Licht and the Glazers have made it clear by their past actions that they don’t value adding players during the season for whatever reason. I think Licht has made 3 in-season trades in his tenure. In their defense, I don’t think one or even two players would make a difference.
October 30th, 2024 at 6:08 pm
I would rather have Bozo the Clown than Clowney.
October 30th, 2024 at 6:09 pm
I would rather have Crusty the Clown as well!
October 30th, 2024 at 6:21 pm
Bosa wants out because SF is too liberal? Get real. This is football. BWA HAHAHAHA
October 30th, 2024 at 6:30 pm
Clueless Todd would put Clowney in Coverage on 3rd and long.
October 30th, 2024 at 6:46 pm
As weak as the Bucs pass rush may seem to be, I’d be much more interested in getting a linebacker who can cover someone.
October 30th, 2024 at 6:52 pm
It’s painful not to go for it every year. That’s what everyone is here for, wins. Having said that, I agree with the posters saying we won’t do anything and it’s not our year.
We came into this year hoping we were SB contenders and at full strength maybe we were close. We aren’t full strength, not even close. Get the young guys as many reps as possible and next season is our time to be buyers and go for it again.
Season isn’t over, this isn’t me rolling over, I hope to see the guys rally, get healthier after the bye and charge into the playoffs to make noise again.
October 30th, 2024 at 6:53 pm
I don’t see Jason or Bowles doing anything to save the season. I expect the trade deadline to pass and JTS and Hall to continue stinking up the D line. Sad situation especially considering that the Bucs defense is going to get torched in the next two games.
October 30th, 2024 at 7:13 pm
It’s like they have waved the flag on the season already
October 30th, 2024 at 7:27 pm
I think the bucs has low key checked out this season and they’re not telling us. I’m tired of saving draft picks when our GM miss on them anyway. I’m all in with Baker but he has to play better as well.
October 30th, 2024 at 7:29 pm
It’s time for Bowles to go now I’m out on him he needs to retire and just go home to the family.
October 30th, 2024 at 7:30 pm
I mean he won a super bowl as a player and as a DC he will never win a super bowl as a HC so why keep wasting time!!
October 30th, 2024 at 7:35 pm
Steve McClendon, the last time the Bucs made an in season trade was 2020, who was the QB then… the Bucs just don’t make those kind of moves, so need to get any hopes up for a mid season move.
October 30th, 2024 at 7:35 pm
Try to get Dean healthy enough to trade for some draft capital. Use the draft pick to help find an edge, ILB (2), or CB.
The Glazers and Licth need to step up and give Coen a big contract to stay as OC – don’t waste his talents at HC.
Licht needs to start the search for a HC and DC so that the Glazers can move quickly, after the season, if Bowles doesn’t turn his defense around soon.
October 30th, 2024 at 7:46 pm
Heck yeah, let’s trad for Clowney or how bout Ojalari or even better BOTH !!!! Bucs Could have had Ojalari in the draft but our GM pics #9 , maybe he gets it right this time. Really why not botn & let’s try to make Qbs worry instead of relaxed. GO BUCS!!!!!
October 30th, 2024 at 7:49 pm
Maybe derrick brooks wants to play again.
October 30th, 2024 at 7:54 pm
Doesn’t matter who the Bucs bring in, it’s not gonna make a difference if Bowles doesn’t get better discipline from his players. My opinion is, he need to shake up his defensive staff. I know he’s loyal to his defensive staff but it’s very clear that they are not getting through, players not listening any more or both.
October 30th, 2024 at 7:59 pm
Licht really sucks at in season moves….
Not expecting anything so enjoy watching this defense get gashed every game by mediocre quarterbacks.
October 30th, 2024 at 8:19 pm
Bosa wouldn’t want to play for DEI hire coach.
October 30th, 2024 at 8:36 pm
So what’s left on Bowles contract and who might be best available coaches to start looking at for next year. I’m honestly done with him and Light tbh. We need to rethink what we’re doing. We honestly got stuck with him as HC because of Arians being a solid coach and winning us a SB with Brady. He was never HC material and never will be. He builds no culture and has terrible timing with wacky blitzes that often don’t work because the personnel mostly doesn’t match. We are wasting the carrers of our younger decent players imo. Sick of so much hybrid crap. Either build a strong 4-3 team or 3-4 team not a hybrid blitz team due to lack of proper players. While we’re at it let’s replace our entire strength department to boot. Most our starters get hurt during the early season at some point. We can’t win when everyone is getting hurt. It’s getting close to rebuild time and I hate it but there will be even more gaps soon if we keep wasting picks on turds.
October 30th, 2024 at 9:00 pm
Bowles contract won’t matter. The Glazers, including Malcolm, have fired better coaches in the past. Todd Bowles is basically Jeff Fischer at this point. If they have a chance at one of their top choices they probably wont hesitate. The top two coaches available will require a ton of incentive to come to Tampa. Aside from MAYBE Arians, this franchise never gets their first choice. I suppose you could argue Lovie was their choice but who knows.
October 30th, 2024 at 9:22 pm
Tood Bowles scheme is the problem. He has already cost us a trip to the Superbowl with the call at the end of Rams game.
October 30th, 2024 at 9:26 pm
Licht will not part with a day 3 pick to get an edge. Basically anyone out there who can help is not going anywhere and most importantly, Licht covets those day 3 picks to draft kickers and punters which still baffles me to this day as you can get most as UDFA or at worst, use a compensentary 7th rounder on….
October 30th, 2024 at 11:47 pm
After watching JTs worthless arse for a couple years- I’m headed down to One Buc place for a tryout.
I can’t do worse.

Bosa wouldn’t want to play for DEI hire coach.
———–
Didn’t you hear Bowles destroy some white leftist reporter last year tried to make it out to be a big deal that he was going to coach against Mike Tomlin, and how they’re both black. Bowles blew up that idiot for her stupid DEI comment.
Criticize Bowles all you want for headcoach, but stop with the nonsense of linking Bowles to just being a token hire. The guy did a great job as DC and earned another chance to be an HC. Even if I personally am not a fan of his, it’s not like he didn’t deserve the chance – and all he’s done since he got the job is make the playoffs each year.
October 31st, 2024 at 12:55 am
Any deal that gets done HAS TO BE geared towards the FUTURE. Not just for this season. Otherwise, it’s just a huge waste of time. Get with reality. This team is going NOWHERE, this season. They are not a ‘serious’ contender. So, what if they ‘limp’ into the Playoffs, just because everyone else collapses and SUCKS. They are NO ‘threat’ whatsoever, & the Bucs FO KNOWS THIS. If you think a #2/#3 WR (&/or) a ‘washed-up’ (plays only when HE decides/wants to) EDGE Rusher is going to do a damm thing, by getting us over the top, then I don’t believe you are in reality.
October 31st, 2024 at 5:01 am
Unsure about Clowney right now and it looks like there could be other players available. However, after reading other Joe posts the Glazers seem to look toward the future like Todd. They seem to be in-sync on their processes. We have had surprises before, so you never know. I believe they are waiting for Mike to come back and then go from there.

It would be his 7th team here. That makes me nervous. Why doesn’t anybody ever want to keep him?
October 31st, 2024 at 10:38 am
JTMs doesn’t even show up for work on Sunday. Look at last weeks stat sheet. How about Trask for Clowney straight up.
October 31st, 2024 at 10:39 am
Probably no way since Canales has seen everything he needs to know in Trask.
October 31st, 2024 at 11:01 am
Trask to Carolina for Clowney, Young to Tennessee for Levis, Levis to Bucs for 5th rounder. Coen’s got his college QB to work with when Mayfields contract expires in a couple of years. Plus you have an experienced backup until then.
October 31st, 2024 at 12:59 pm
Robert … ‘Tood Bowles scheme is the problem. ‘
We’ve made the playoffs FOUR straight years using that scheme Robert, and won 1 Superbowl with it. Our problem right now is that the players don’t fit the scheme. I’m sure that’s partially on Bowles (he surely had an input), but more-so it’s on Licht (major part of his job title?).
Right now our interior DLine play is meh (no pressure there at all in past several games), our OLB play is meh (5.5 sacks in 8 games for 4 OLBs is abysmal), our ILB play is meh (I’m trying to be kind), our CB play is meh (that’s being overly kind) and our Safety play is meh too. As a defense, it’s meh from front to back.
We need to change it up obviously (if you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting). Personally in favor of turning DC responsibilities over to George Edwards (he’s got a
October 31st, 2024 at 1:08 pm
Hmmm, didn’t quite finish …
Personally in favor of turning DC responsibilities over to George Edwards (he’s got an excellent background as a 4-3 DC). Also in favor of trading with the Jaguars for LB Devin Loyd to replace KJ Britt. He’s in his 3rd year with them (1st Rnd pick in 2021) and has started each year. This year he’s been on the field for 79% of their def snaps, and has 1 sack, 2 QB Hits, 4 TFLs, 1 FF, 2 PDs, and 50 tackles (26 solo). Combine that with his 69.6% Completion Allowed Percentage & at 6’3″ & 235 lbs running a 4.55 sec 40 yd he’d be a nice addition IMO & could take over MLB fast I bet.
