Gronk Tells Personal Baker Mayfield Stories

October 16th, 2024

So the inaugural Dudes On Dudes episode was a must-listen for Joe. And no, it had nothing to do with the name of the podcast.

Dudes On Dudes is Rob Gronkowski’s new show with retired receiver Julian Edelman. On their docket was a Baker Mayfield discussion.

Gronk took over the chatter and talked about regular workouts with Mayfield this offseason. Gronk stressed that these were in the gym, intense sessions, and the two never threw a football together.

Bench press, squats, deadlifts, Mayfield gets after them like he’s playing another position, per Gronk.

“He’s like the ultimate, like, teammate,” Gronk said of Mayfield. “He’s like the ultimate locker room guy. Quarterbacks aren’t really like this. I mean, he’s a quarterback that will go have a beer with you at the bar and get fu**ed up with you. We didn’t get fu**ed up or anything like that. I’m just saying I can just tell he’s a guy like that. He’s a guy that will come over and chop it up with you while watching the game, whatever it is, the WNBA or if it’s soccer. Whatever it is, he’ll have his opinion, he’ll make you laugh. He’s not a politician. … He’s no bullsh*t.”

Gronk said Mayfield came to their scheduled March workout the same day he signed his new $100 million contract that morning.

It impressed Gronk that Mayfield was just a regular guy hungry to improve on a life-changing day.

“It was like nothing happened. He just showed up. He didn’t have an ego. He didn’t have a big head or nothing,” Gronk said. “He just showed up and frickin’ put the work in that day and hit some more PRs. And that’s what I appreciate about him. He’s a dude, man. He’s a dog. He wants to get dirty. He wants to just have a good time. He wants to laugh.”

Joe was impressed hearing all this and more.

And frankly, Joe wondered for a moment whether Tampa-based Gronk, who said he’s still logging PRs in retirement (personal records in the gym) might consider suiting up for one more Bucs season.

“no, it had nothing to do with the name of the podcast.” Hahahaha!!!

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

I tried to listen to it this morning and it was hard to stay engaged. Edelnut seemed impaired to me and uninformed on Baker. The personal story from Gronk was nice but nothing really of substance outside of that. I probably won’t listen to it again.

Love hearing this from Gronk about Baker! That is our QB. He is the ultimate guy!

  4. White Tiger Says:

I know he comes off as a total “Dude/Bro” – but there’s just something about Gronk. He’s leaning into the persona he’s been tagged with, but he’s funny, and he doesn’t take himself too seriously.

But yeah, neither Gronk nor Edelman seem like they’re going to go negative on any player they feature. You’re probably going to be able to glean that information by who they DON’T highlight. Might this show also be a vehicle for a couple of accomplished, funny, happy former-players – help agents or advertisers rehabilitate dinged images of certain players? I’ll keep watching for a bit.

  5. BakerFan Says:

Gronk suiting up would give us what 5 TE’s, still trying to figure out why they carry 4.

  6. Bowles4President Says:

From probably likes still having his knees. I can’t blame him for retiring

  7. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

The Bucs were/are very fortunate to have rostered both players. Mayfield just might become the steal of the century with that contract of his. You see when you get a player that good at a bargain price it affords other good players like Reddick on your roster. Just sayin.

  8. BuckyBuc Says:

Gronk, come back for another playoff run buddy

  9. SlyPirate Says:

    “Gronk know that not money!”

  10. BucVoyager Says:

I wonder if the story about Brady actually came from Gronk. Just throwing it out there.

  11. unbelievable Says:

@BucVoyager – haha that’s an interesting take, def could be!

  12. drdneast Says:

The Browns and the Panther’s really F’d up.

  13. Dave Pear Says:

Bakers next challenge is to throw with Gronk and then get him to unretire and play the second half of the season with us. I’ll bet he could still block like a tackle – heck he’d make a better backup RT than the Druler.

Glad to know they hang out, wonder when / how they first got together and who introduced them.

    Soooo cooooool. Offense rules.

  14. Hodad Says:

You know we were lucky to get Brady, but Gronk is an all time classic. He brought the joy to Tampa when he was here, and continues on FOX. So happy he was part of our long franchise’s history in such a meaningful way.

I’ve been watching #6 since he was at Tech. Then he walked on with my Sooners and beat out the starting QB who had just defeated Bama in the Sugar Bowl. He has always seemed like one of your favorite frat bros. The only difference is the guy can flat out ball PLUS he’s intelligent. This is the first NFL team he’s been with that seems like the perfect fit he had at OU.

  16. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Yes, we all know that Winning is fun, Brady.

But I guarantee that Gronk would’ve enjoyed playing with Mayfield more than Brafy in alot of ways. Gronk and Mayfield seem to be cut from the same cloth way more than Gronk/Brady

Hmmmmmmmm could be. I like Mayfield much better than Methusaleh12.

  18. lambchop Says:

Politician eh? Hmmm, like Tom Brady?

  19. lambchop Says:

    @Eric,

The Super Bowl rings made Gronk first ballot HOFer and arguably one of the best TEs the NFL has seen. I’m sure he’s happy with the way things turned out for him with Brady.

  20. GoneGator Says:

Gronk is saying he likes Baker more and thinks he’s a better person than TB12.

Not actually, but if you read between the lines…. Lol

  21. Matt_PcAfee Says:

    GRONK NO PLAY FOOTBALLS

  22. BucVoyager Says:

@GG that’s what made me think that maybe it was him. Reading between the lines, you know he really would have loved a chance to play with Baker.

  23. Gipper Says:

Don’t need to gin up any controversy here. Mayfield, Brady and Gronk are unique people. If everyone was the same, things would be boring. Just accept these guys as is. Pretty sure that Gronk doesn’t have an agenda.

  24. Dave Pear Says:

    Gronk.

  25. Boss Says:

    chop it up with ya?

flashbacks of that one QB we had that went to MN and flamed out!

or maybe I just read it wrong / chopped it up a few too many times. lol

Seriously? No need to stir up controversy? Do you read the articles, not to mention the comments, here? LMFAO 😂
You’ve been around here for awhile Gipper…you should know that stirring up controversy is the point of much that’s written here. Not saying that’s good but it’s reality.

My little comments lately about reading between the lines is really me poking fun at Joe. Pretty cool of him to let me do so 😎

    Boss

I hear ya. Haven’t “chopped it up” myself since vacation. Gotta have some discipline but I like the way you think.

  28. Student of the Game Says:

Can’t believe I read through all the responses and there were no Trask calls. Refreshing!

  29. infomeplease Says:

This team is the perfect fit for BM6 ! Glad he’s out guy!

  30. Gipper Says:

    GoneGator,
Didn’t even have you in mind. There was a tenor to the article that Baker is more fun or “normal” than say, maybe, Brady? Don’t think that Gronk would really ever go there. My point is that the 3 people in question are different and that is OK with most.
