Grade A Offensive Line

October 28th, 2024

Joe’s Monday tradition at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters, after cleaning the toilet and pulling corn chips from the couch, is to re-watch Sunday’s game with a sharp eye on the offensive line.

And after 72 counted snaps yesterday, Joe is certain the line earned an “A” grade from coaches and anyone paying attention.

The stats very much tell the story on this week. Baker Mayfield dropped back to pass 52 times and the Falcons did not generate an quarterback hit. Forget sacks, no hits!

It was damn impressive. And the Bucs ran the ball successfully. Sure, the Falcons blew up a few runs, including the ill-conceived, ill-timed fake punt that lost two yards. And Bucky Irving once needed his extraordinary magic to get back to the line of scrimmage. But that’s going to happen.

In all, the Bucs run game was quite good.

Cody Mauch came out dealing and punishing, and the offensive line was very good across the board.

This young line has Joe very excited about what lies ahead for the Bucs offense. (Left guard Ben Bredeson is the elder at 26 years old). The line should only improve and help the Bucs maintain their elite per-game scoring average.

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht has crafted a hell of a unit.

    Glazers fired their coach today.

Just not the one we were hoping for…

    Manchester United coach was fired.

  2. adam from ny Says:

    yes and they’re a handsome group too…

    oh wait mauch needs a tooth…maybe 2

    🙂

  3. DayOnePaul Says:

This was the brightest spot yesterday.
Baker (in the first half), Bucky (in the first half), Otton (in the first half), and the blocking all game.
The receiver weapons are gone, and the defense can’t stop anybody.
The O-Line looked good all day long.

  4. adam from ny Says:

    @Geno:

    so that’s the baseline…

if bowles pulls up with a 4-13 season he’s as good as canned…

he should be okay for now

  5. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Being a Buc fan is starting to wear on me, ruins my whole damn week when we see disgusting defensive play like yesterday, Ridicules!!! I saw Whitehead loafing at least 5 times, I think the defense has Givin up on Bowles. No fire or desire!! Go Bucs.

  6. BuckyBuc Says:

complete shame, we lost because bowles is a low IQ head coach and the defense just rolled over

  7. Pmike Says:

It’s really nice to see the progress the front office has made with the development O line. Was really a weak point for us.

Now it’s time to reboot our linebackers and cornerbacks this offseason. I have faith in Bowles and honestly think he is wearing too many hats. Getting him a defensive coordinator will likely fix a lot of his issues and allow him to focus on game time calls and management. Really opposed to promoting Coen. He’s doing great in his current position, why change that!

I will say this: The vibes right now feel a lot like last year. From the outside, it seems as if there is conflict in the locker room within the defense (think Devin white issues last year). I think we have bad attitude player that is leaking into our team morale on defense.

That’s after we make a playoff run!! Go bucs

  8. Ds Says:

Crazy we have a top 5 oline, but the worst defense in football

  9. Pahpahmike Says:

Adam from ny. I think if Bowles doesn’t go at least 10&6 and at least 2 games into the playoffs, I think he will be replaced. Just to much bad coaching. You have a good OL with a pretty good player this year and as far as personal, the defense should be preforming a lot better and the best we are doing is .500. At some point the HC has to be held accountable

  10. Pahpahmike Says:

Pmike, I don’t no if it bad attitude or just bad coaching 😊. Remember they got rid of D White because of bad attitude and all the new guys were hand picked by Bowles

  11. CobbtownBucFan Says:

The offense is coming along but TB’s lame defensive calls are growing so old. I could not believe how open the D line was to a quarterback sneak on the 4th and one which K. Cousins so easily made. There was no nose guard in front of the Falcon’s center. If we stopped that quarterback sneak the game would have taken a different turn. Another great defensive strategy from TB. Wish the Bucs would try a Head Coach sneak and sneak TB out of Tampa.

  12. DayOnePaul Says:

…and Joe Tryon, Anthony Nelson, Ya Ya Diaby, Calijah Kancey, Will Gholston, and Vita Vea can’t get ANY sustained pressure on the QB? WTF?

  13. Dave Pear Says:

Interesting that the great Fog Index Pontiff now blames Jason for Todd’s horrible defense and yet we have a high performing offense minus its top 2 weapons. Gosh, what might the difference be? A competent coordinator perhaps? Naa. Couldn’t be. LVD, Vea, Winfield, Whitehead, Dean, Kancey, Diaby, Izien, Nellie, Brewer all suck.

Oh, wait. They’ve regressed. Now who might oversee the regression of previously competent players?

    Hmm. I’m stumped.

  14. Bucamania Says:

Oline and young RBs are the bright spots.

  15. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Having time for routes to develop was a welcomed addition. Now if Baker can use that time to hit receivers downfield instead of the opposing secondary, that would be great.

  16. BuckyBuc Says:

they could’ve just ran the ball every play and call screens they would’ve won

  17. drdneast Says:

To bad Licht hasnt constructed an elite defensive line. Maybe he should draft some offensive tackles and try to convert them to DL.

  18. Tucker Says:

How are they supposed to get pressures or sacks when recievers are almost instantly open. 4 and 3 to a touch down what even is that who cares about the missed calls they happen in all the games if you are depending on that to win games you got big problems.

  19. Greg Says:

The offense is a welcome surprise. The defense is an unwelcome surprise. Also, I was looking at the list of coaches. Did I miss something or are we seriously light on defensive coaches?

  20. SlyPirate Says:

The Bucs have made a heavy investment of top picks and cash into the OL. Happy it’s working out.

I agree with most, Bowles has taken the team as far as he can. He can’t win the games that matter. Opposing offenses know his gameplan. Time for a change.

  21. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

    500 coach

  22. Steven Rivera Says:

Jason has miss completed on the D line at best they are back ups

  23. Rod Munch Says:

The offensive line play has been very good since Luke got back – and it’s been helped by Coen changing up the play calling as well. They also look a lot better after a shaky start, which again, I attribute to being a new system – and this is a very very different system than in the past, with tons of movement, in particular by the center and guards.

Overall it’s a very good sign.

The bad sign is that they’re giving Baker all day to pass the ball, and he’s making really bad decisions. You can’t blame his INTs on getting rushed or having to throw under pressure. Hopefully the line can keep it up while Baker figures out his part.

  24. JimBobBuc Says:

I was skeptical of the Carberry hire, but I think Carbs and Pic deserve some credit for the OL play. Also, Coen’s run plays are much more diverse than Canales.

BTW, how’s Canales doing at Carolina? Too bad he hasn’t played our defense yet – they could save his job.

  25. BakerFan Says:

If the Bucs O line get an A (which I disagree) then the Falcons Line gets an A++. It is unbelievable how an immobile statue can have all the time in the world to pick a Bucs defense backfield apart.

  26. Commander Says:

If the bucs kept the same play calling as they used in the first quarter we should’ve won. Their defense would have been gassed.
