Faster Throws Get Big Results

October 2nd, 2024

“Start fast, Baker.”

Baker Mayfield was sharp against the Eagles. One reason that got a lot of run for his good day was getting rid of the ball quicker.

But a quicker release doesn’t mean it’s a good play on its own. Mayfield explained how a faster release is good for the entire offense, not just the quarterback.

“It’s huge, but it’s not just for me, it’s for everybody else too,” Mayfield began. “The O-line is able to settle in too, getting your skill guys going early gives them confidence in certain concepts, on a critical third down or in the red zone.

“It’s important for us to start fast, whatever the scheme may be, however, we want to attack a team – we just have to execute the plan at hand and go from there. … Get [the ball] in our skill guys’ hands and go from there.”

Ah, fast starts. Well, we saw what happened on Sunday when a team gets off to a fast start. Building a 24-0 lead in the first half makes it damn hard on your opponent to rally and win.

What impressed Joe was not only did the Bucs score a touchdown on their first drive — the first time that happened in 23 games dating back to Jan. 2023 when Tom Brady was quarterback — but the Bucs followed that up with another touchdown on the second drive.

The last time the Bucs scored touchdowns on their first two drives of the game came in Dec. 2021 when Brady was quarterback.

Fast starts kill opponents.

Faster throws especially to the perimeter wears out a defense quicker too. That is the extension of the run we have been needing. I wish Baker would actually audible to a quick WR throw 1v1 like A Rod does to Lazzard. I think it would work with Godwin as skinny as he gets so quickly. Godwin has the most sudden move in football IMO. A lot like Deebo Samuel.
I also think when it comes to Vita Vea, the first time a center goes up against him, they aren’t prepared for his speed and power.
Last game Philly had a new center.
The Washington Commanders have Tyler Biadesz, but he is new to their team and no longer has Tyler Smith and freaking Zach Martin next to him.
What do we have coming up in this game?
    A backup Center.

i forgot what it’s like for a thursday night bucs game already lol…

it’s exciting to have football in just one day…

not excited for it for the players tho – they really haven’t had ample time to rest their bodies up at all – and prepare properly…this short week stuff’s really just not right from an overall preparation perspective…on so many levels and from so many angles…

then we bucs or birds fans wind up fiending and detoxing on sunday with no bucs ball…

it’s probably a cool little breakeroonie for the joes, and the media peeps who grind every sunday for 18+ weeks…

worried about the luke situation too…he’s missing a lot of time…we really need him back…but i guess he’s just not ready to bang heady consistently yet…

why is kancey missing time – almost exactly like last year…it’s a little crazy…starting to look exactly like the start to his rookie campaign…

the dennis loss is terrible…he and zyon are def our most exciting young guys on the come up…then he gets hurt…

i haven’t heard much news on dennis…what exactly is the injury, what exactly is the time frame he will be shelved…who knows…big gap in the linebacking core now without him…

short week shantytown shenannies for the shucksters!

Nailed it Joe! I hope we learned a ton from this game. TDs instead of FGs for starters.

    Go Bucs!

  4. Defense Rules Says:

BillyBucco … ‘Last game Philly had a new center. What do we have coming up in this game? A backup Center.’

Nice catch; love it. Vea bringing pressure in the interior makes all the difference with this defense. Did notice however that he lined up on the end on several plays in the Philly game. That must’ve blown Hurts’ mind.

  5. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Perhaps the reason why Brady and now mayfield were so able to get off faster throws was due to that intense focus of details that gives them a split second edge over most. Kinda makes sense.
The harder they worked, the luckier they got, sort of thing.
Some may infer this as stressful. Or some may infer as working advantage…

“The Atlanta Falcons beat the Saints 26-24 and with the win put themselves in control of the NFC South. While the Bucs currently hold the division the Falcons will face Tampa on Thursday night. Atlanta will follow this game with another divisional matchup against the struggling Carolina Panthers”

this is from blogging dirty.com headline Falcons in control of nfc south

is it just me or are they already counting the W? i’m offended! somebody give this quote to the bucs, Atlanta is counting the W already

    let’s crush them!

  7. Win in the Trenches Says:

Big differance from last years O.C. and this years O.C. …. Liam Cohen is head and shoulders above Canales

    Absolutely spot on.

  9. Steven007 Says:

Billy, what DR said. Yes, good catch. Now that will be a point of focus for me on Thursday. Not that it usually isn’t with the big guy in there.

  10. Permanently Moderated Says:

Colin Cowturd said yesterday that the Falcons will win the division. The disrespect continues. Bucs must crush them convincingly so morons like Cowturd have to admit they are clueless.

  11. Panhandle Buc Says:

First play should ALWAYS be a pass…either to Chris or Mike and set the tone right away!!

  12. Crickett Baker Says:

In one interview I know I heard Liam say he found out that a run up the middle in the beginning wasn’t working. I was so pleasantly surprised I almost fell out of my chair. Hopefully, we have seen the last of that, finally.

  13. ATLBUC Says:

Bucs should add the play that Baltimore succeeded with a few times; fake wide receiver screen, rb draw. The Bills couldn’t stop that play

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

Atlanta had a much more stressful game on Sunday than we did. Then again, their injured list is four players. Ours looks like a phone book. I still think we will win.
