Exploding Bucs Offense
October 17th, 2024Now Joe doesn’t know if the Bucs are in the top-10 in explosive plays, definitions of explosive plays vary depending who is manning a keyboard. But Joe admits to rubbing his eyes in disbelief looking at these offensive numbers.
Especially after two years of watching dreadful, boring, run-up-the-middle, yawn-inducing, don’t-use-your-passing-weapons, three-and-out, establish-the-punt offenses circa 1973.
The Bucs offense leads the NFL (!) in passing touchdowns (15) and is second in offensive points scored (171) (first in total points) and fourth in yards per rushing attempt (5.3) and third-down conversion percentage (47.1), plus fifth in first downs per game (22.3), sixth in yards per play (6.1) and ninth in total yards per game (367.2).
If Joe said back in July the Bucs would lead in touchdown passes and points scored, you would have demanded Joe enter a rehab facility.
Yet a third of the way through the season, here we are. Hard to believe.

We could let Dave go but Glazers and Jason got to find a way to keep Coen if he keeps this up.
October 17th, 2024 at 11:00 am
The offense is fun to watch again. I even enjoy watching them run the ball, unlike the last 2 seasons.
October 17th, 2024 at 11:05 am
It’s just incredible that we have been able to survive and move forward without the offensive savant Dave Canales as NFL writers predicted.
October 17th, 2024 at 11:05 am
And Joe, this was mostly done with a RB who lacks vision, and a banged up Mike.
October 17th, 2024 at 11:08 am
I don’t want to jump the gun, but if the offense stays this explosive all year, the Glazers should do with Coen what they did with Monte Kiffin after the 2002 Super Bowl win and make him the highest paid coordinator in the league.
October 17th, 2024 at 11:12 am
Gonna be a real good test on Monday night going up against the #1 rushing defense.
Lets hope the Bucs actually show up for it.
October 17th, 2024 at 11:13 am
I agree Joseph – pay Coen 3 – 3.5m / year to stay, and then ya gotta give Bowles a raise too of course. Worth it. The Glazers are rolling in cash.
October 17th, 2024 at 11:19 am
Bucs should seriously consider moving Rachaad White to slot receiver
Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker should be the RB’s moving forward
October 17th, 2024 at 11:20 am
Bowles has made it clear he does not want to coach forever. If the offense continues to roll, give Coen some big money and make him the un-official HC in waiting. . .

Bucs are playing at a high level while still dealing with injuries. Hope they get and stay healthy for the rest of the season!
October 17th, 2024 at 11:24 am
IMHO The Bucs are now down to health. IF the Bucs stay healthy they not only will reach the post season they may get home field advantage all the way to the SB.
Again the Bucs lost to the Saints 38-3 at RayJay midway through the SB season.
Talk about a demoralizing assskicking!!! But they regrouped, had not just one but many team leaders, and the rest as they say his history.
No reason, other than injuries, to not believe that could happen again. Kancey just going to keep getting better as are YaYa and Braswell. McCollum who I loved last year for his fierce hitting has now emerged as genuine DB. Carlton Who?
The biggest weakness that remains unaddressed is ILB with Britt. Perhaps however Winfield can help fill that void.
Whatever, this is a team clearly on the RISE!!! Licht for NFL exec of the year!
Imagine with yet another great draft what this team could be next year. How about a team that Coen does not want to leave for the first suiter who comes calling.

Speaking of coaching…
Yahoo Sports just released their most recent list of coaches on the hot seat.
Sorry Dave Pear but Bowles didn’t make the list.
So they believe the leading candidates to be the 2nd guy axed after Saleh..
1.) Doug Pederson Jacksonville 1-5
2.) Mike McCarthy ‘Boys 3-3 perhaps at the tipping point?
3.) Nick Siriani – Eagles
4.) Dennis Allen – Saints…starting 2-0 igniting expectations but losing the next four games straight including last Sunday’s Buc buttkicking. And now the Saints must come back on a SHORT week playing tonight against the Broncos. Sean Payton comes back home to “Lincoln’s Tomb”, yeah I picked it up here, and a fanbase that adores him. The Saints are still stuck with Spencer Rattler and Payton has second half tape on how to shut him out. It’s so bad the Saints are 2 point dogs at home!
5.)Brian Daboll – Giants 2-4 and perhaps on the verge of a complete rebuild.
October 17th, 2024 at 11:37 am
It’s not like we’ve just been beating up on bad passing defence teams too, our opponents defences have allowed the 13th lowest passing yards per attempt at an average of 6.5yards per attempt.
Teams who have played opponents whos defences allowed the highest average passing yards per attempt are: #1 Lions (7.26per att), #2 Bengals (7.09), #3 Browns (7.03…really goes to show how awful Watson is when hes played the 3rd worst passing defences in the league but still stinks), #4 Bears (6.94) and #5 Cardinals (6.89)
The teams who have played opponents whos defences have allowed the least passing yards per atempt are #1 Jets (5.94), #2 Pats (6.09), #3 Vikings (6.10 shows how good Darnold has been this year), #4 Colts (6.16) and #5 Broncos (6.16).

It’s been awesome to watch. Can’t let Coen get away.
October 17th, 2024 at 12:10 pm
@Farmer, thanks for the informative comment. I notice ole cheating Sean Payton is on that defenses-who-have-bottled-up-opponents’-passing-attacks-list with the Broncos. Hope Denver is keeping that POS on a short lease with the cheating. Yeah, I’m a Bucs fan who despises him cos he’s a lowlife. Guess the Bucs loss to Denver isn’t as bad as we thought.

Coen isn’t going anywhere. He is having a field day coaching a multi-talented offense. I can’t wait until he finally feels totally comfortable with his players, and unleashes the Buccaneer Offensive Kraken. Mebbe Monday night even if ME13 sits this one out so he can heal.
October 17th, 2024 at 12:17 pm
*leash not lease. Man, I am having a bad typo hair day.
October 17th, 2024 at 12:54 pm
Dave Canales… addition by subtraction.
October 17th, 2024 at 12:57 pm
If Coen keeps this offense humming you have to do something to keep him here. Because there will be 5 to 7 head coach openings and more than likely Coen is going to be a top three candidate.
October 17th, 2024 at 1:03 pm
Alanbucsfan … ‘Bucs should seriously consider moving Rachaad White to slot receiver’.
Uhh, Bucs have a pretty good slot receiver (Godwin?) who’s on the field for 88% of our offensive plays. No way Coen should lessen Chris’s snaps just to get Rachaad on the field more.
Right now we have a 3-headed monster, and it’s Coen’s job to figure out how to use all 3 in an optimal fashion. Personally I’d love to see more 2-back sets, but hey, I’m old-fashioned that way. And if you look at our rushing attack from Sunday, we only rushed 8 times (23%) in the 1st half, but 27 times (77%) in the 2nd half. And most of those 2nd half runs (19) came in the 4th qtr.
Looks to me like Coen’s plan was to run the Saints’ defense all over the field for the 1st half using a short passing game, then accelerate that somewhat (8 runs) in the 3rd qtr, then lower the boom in the 4th qtr (19 runs). Seems to have worked, because we gained 220 yards rushing in the 2nd half versus 57 yards in the 1st half. Bucs had 3 runs of 10 yards or more in the 1st qtr, none in the 2nd qtr, 1 in the 3rd qtr but than a whopping 7 in the 4th qtr. Gut feel is that the Saints’ defenders’ tongues were hanging out by the 4th qtr.

Farmer … Great analysis. Very helpful … thanks.

orlbucfan … Every losing team is always on the lookout for the next great coach to ‘save them’ (remember how excited we were when Bruce Arians came riding into town?). Offensive coaches seem to be preferred flavor-of-the-month. Coen will almost surely get offers IMO, and the Bucs won’t stand in his way of accepting one IF that’s what he wants right now.
However, he MIGHT want to stay here another year depending upon how this season plays out. This team looks to be about 1 year (draft & free agency) away from having a roster that can compete for the Super Bowl (we’ve still got a couple of holes that need to be filled to run consistently with the big dogs). And Coen seems to have ‘figured out Baker’ better than anyone else ever has. He MIGHT decide to stay after this season to go for a championship here AND potentially put himself in a position to select a better team to coach after the 2025 season.

Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs should seriously consider moving Rachaad White to slot receiver
Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker should be the RB’s moving forward

Commenters here should consider being fans and leaving coaching and personnel changes up to the staff, also…. But neither is going to happen
October 17th, 2024 at 1:43 pm
Quarterbacks can make or break coaches. Baker is proving to be a great quarterback. Why would Liam Coen not want to hitch himself to the QB that has the potential to take him on a great ride ?
October 17th, 2024 at 2:13 pm
fourth in yards per rushing attempt (5.3) is all the more impressive when considering our #1 RB averages 3.6 per
October 17th, 2024 at 2:16 pm
Offense rules. It must.
October 17th, 2024 at 2:17 pm
DR-
Agree, wouldn’t want to take Godwin off the field, but some teams have used a stack slot receiver formation (2 slot receivers) next to or stacked behind each other where one takes a short inside route to clear LB and other takes a slightly deeper slant route
October 17th, 2024 at 2:21 pm
If Sean Tucker and Bucky Irving get 80% of the snaps, all these offensive numbers will increase… Especially the Yards per Carry… that’s going up to 8.0+ ypc if Rachaad only gets 20% of the touches
October 17th, 2024 at 2:28 pm
welp…when in one game you put up the points and yardage of two games, the numbers get a little skewed…
but let’s just keep it flowing because the offense is looking good…
coen > cantalones
October 17th, 2024 at 2:41 pm
Hopefully, Liam decides to run this offense for several years instead of jumping up to a HC position.
October 17th, 2024 at 2:42 pm
And then they played the Ravens , Chiefs, and 49ers.
October 17th, 2024 at 4:52 pm
Alanbucsfan … ‘some teams have used a stack slot receiver formation (2 slot receivers)’.
Interesting tactic. Admittedly can’t remember anyone ever calling it that, but with Godwin & White as the 2 slots, I would expect that it could be productive.
BTW, did you notice what Shepard did in Sunday’s game? He ran it 4 times for 31 yards (all in the 2nd half) … 9, 5, 24 and -7 yards. And ALL 4 were around Left End. Bucs must’ve seen something on the left side, because Tucker & Irving ran around Left End another 5 times … for another 77 yards. You won’t see that every game.

What we need now is another dissertation on why complementary football is useful while attempting to win a football game. This point is very subtle. Hardly anyone knows about it.
October 17th, 2024 at 11:01 pm
In other news — Rattler is so horrible it’s embarrassing we let him throw for 200 yards in the first half. Amazing.
