Don’t Expect A Bucs Trade For A Receiver

October 30th, 2024

Want the Bucs to add a receiver? There’s a better chance, Joe believes, of Bucs edge rushers rising up to shock the NFL in the second half of the season.

Yes, Chris Godwin is out for the regular season and Mike Evans has a bad hamstring that will cost him at least the next two games. The Bucs still have Super Bowl dreams, but they’re darn happy with their receiving corps.

Consider what Todd Bowles told the Buccaneers Radio Network yesterday.

First, Bowles raved about the maturation of rookie Jalen McMillan.

“I think Jalen’s rounding into a very good receiver,” Bowles said. “His route running, his understanding of the game, his maturity from when he first started in the beginning of the season has grown leaps and bounds.”

Trey Palmer? Bowles had a little extra juice in his voice.

“Trey’s just a gamer. He makes plays,” Bowles said. “You put him out there, he’s going to make a play.”

Bowles, however, maybe had his greatest love for the three-catch, 58-yard performance of second-year receiver Rakim Jarrett. He’s a favorite inside the walls of One Buc Palace and those three Jarrett catches were all for first downs.

Jarrett had knee surgery this summer and Sunday was his first action of the year. Bowles showered Jarrett with praise for his endurance late in the game and the work it took to get there.

Bowles added that the bigger and more diverse workload receivers are getting now with Evans and Godwin should have a real and positive impact later this season.

The head coach sure sounded disinterested in adding a receiver.

He keeps thinking about the future but might not realize he may not be here to see it through! Make some damn moves now! Chiefs, ravens can make moves but here we are standing pat? Smh dunno if it’s Licht or Bowles but someone has got to do something to save our season

  2. unbelievable Says:

The Bucs aren’t adding anyone. They’ve made it abundantly clear they’re not actually serious about trying to win a championship this season.

    – Ravens needed a WR, they traded for one.
    – Chiefs needed a WR, they traded for one.
    – Jets needed a WR (and a lot more), they traded for one.
    – Vikings needed a LT, they traded for one.

    Etc., etc.

Meanwhile, what have the Bucs done about their ILB position getting exposed and abused week in and week out?

What have they done about their porous secondary that is also getting filled with injuries?

What have they done about their non-existent edge rush from the OLB / DE position?

    Nothing, nothing and nothing.

They’re not serious about competing this year. It’s clear as day.

  3. Steven #55 Says:

I’m fine with this – Evans should return after the bye and we were unlikely to beat the Chiefs & 49ers with him and Godwin anyway considering our defense cant stop anthing. Go get an edge rusher or at the very least ask someone what they want for one. If the price is too steep thats fine but we are in danger of wasting a season.

  4. Jordan Says:

Need an edge rusher or inside linebacker way worse.

  5. Anderson Says:

Sounds like a team throwing in the towel for this season and getting ready for the 2025 NFL draft

  6. David Kilmer Says:

I don’t think you can blame the lack of pursuing players through a trade all on Bowles. I belive this is more on Light and the organaztion’s philosophy of keeping draft picks and developing players. yes they desperately need a an ilb and edge rusher, if not 2 edgerushers. However, yes as Bowles said teams are not just giving them away. I believe they adopted this philosophy some time ago, maybe last year and are firmily sticking to it despite the need to do so now. The other part of the issue players on defense have been slow to develop or are not developing as initially thought. It further appears this defense is currently simply not motivated. I don’t know how else you explain lack of concentration at this level. The other thought offensives have caught up with Bowles defensive skemes . Atl inparticilar appears to have Bowles’s number.
I don’t think you will see Light giving up a draft pick or 2 to get someone this year, just don’t.
I believe they will ride out the year with the players they have and look to build in the draft. In other words these players for good or bad are it. If they stay unmotivated then I can see a change in the coaching staff.
Thi defense is basically impossible to watch, right now

  7. Tampa Bay-ker Says:

At this point, I think I’d be exploring trading soon-to-be 29-year-old Chris for a second—or third-round pick next year and use it to trade up for one of the better edge rushers. I doubt we’re going to pay two receivers 20+ mil each. We may as well get something of value for him now, even though the value will be much lower with the injury, but it’s better than nothing in free agency.

    Defense

  9. Permanently Moderated Says:

We weren’t expecting a trade for any position, so don’t worry.

The Bucs aren’t interested in adding anyone…. or MAYBE… just maybe they have more confidence in their guys that already know the playbook than bringing in some retread player that their previous team didn’t want for whatever reason and would still have to learn the playbook and develop chemistry with the players around them…. How many times in NFL history has a midseason trade actually made a big difference on a team? Eric Dickerson to the Colts maybe? That’s about it. It just doesn’t happen. I have more faith in guys already on the roster than guys their previous teams don’t want and might be damaged good anyways.

BTW, how many of you armchair GMs have won a Super Bowl? How many consecutive playoff appearances have your teams made? BTW, how did those old veterans you all wanted the Bucs to bring in over the years workout? Sherman, Desir, Keanu the alleged safety, that crappy TE that played for the Vikings… none of those guys worked out. Even Antonio Brown managed to implode the team in 2021. We would’ve won the Super Bowl without him and he single-handedly destroyed the 2021 season. Even Fournette wasn’t an upgrade over Ronald Jones… Jones was a far better player in 2020 than Fournette ever was.

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

The future has always been get out of debt and start pushing for a championship in 2026. That’s the goal and that’s why they aren’t spending or trading picks.

  12. Casey Says:

Bowles is a loser would you expect anything else from a loser of a coach he sucks and has sucked since he’s been here! His defense is garbage !

  13. Jeff Says:

Players still don’t know what to do in Clueless Todd’s playbook. STILL!

  14. Viktor Vaughn Says:

Instead we’ll get 33 year old corner Troy Hill from the checkers drive thru window!!!

  15. CyberDilemma Says:

A reminder of when Joel Glazer was asked 14 years ago during an interview why Dominik and Raheem didn’t trade for Santonio Holmes or Brandon Marshall he said the following:

“We’ve had long talks about this. And really, the general message is: You think long-term, we think long-term. It’s plain and simple. You start thinking short-term, we start thinking short term.

  16. MelvinJunior Says:

Nobody is giving away ANYTHING for an injured WR who can’t play, and who will be an UFA at the end of the season. The ONLY way the Bucs get anything for him is to sign him on a ‘one-year’ deal at a reasonable price and HOPE that he makes a full recovery back to where he left off this season, & then trade him before the deadline NEXT season. Even THEN, they would be very lucky to get a 3rd and that’s probably not gonna happen. And, yes… They could’ve ‘afforded’ TWO $20MIL+ WR’s. That’s what they’re paying for right now, this season. Chris signed a 3yr/$60M contract that he was playing out this year!!!! Having Baker on the cheap would’ve easily justified having TWO $20Myr WR’s. The Eagles are doing it with like a $50MIL QB and one WR at $32M and the other at $25M. It’s the new NFL (salary cap)… And if they can do it, then so can we.

  17. Chris Says:

I”m curious why everyone keeps saying we need an edge rusher. We have edge rushers. They just drop into coverage a lot so they dont’ get as many chances to rush the passer and put up numbers. We could sign prime J.J. Watt right now and we’d still drop him into coverage.

  18. richbucsfan Says:

    Very disinterested in coach speak.

  19. BucsFan81 Says:

Haha no one is trading for Chris and if anything he should be kept. If any WR was trade bait it would be Evans. He is older and he will be healthy in a few weeks. Oh and Jones wasn’t no world beater in 2020. Playoff Lenny got his nickname for a reason in the 2020 playoffs.

  20. BridleOaksBuc Says:

Serious question…What WR is out there that we would want to give up draft picks in a trade? I’d like to see some armchair GM’s make some real legitimate and thoughtful suggestions. And please don’t include Mike Williams, unless it’s for a 6th or 7th…

  21. adam from ny Says:

can we at least wear the all pewter uni’s out in kansas city this monday night…

go in looking bad azz……come out with a victory…!

hell yeah…rock the all pewter look

  22. unbelievable Says:

@Brandon – none of that changes what I said. They’re not serious about winning a championship this year. If they were, they would have addressed at least one of those gaping holes. WR is actually the least of my worries.

Tell me, how is all that chemistry and guys knowing the system working for the defense right now? Is giving up 500+ yards in the 2 of the last 4 games acceptable to you? Is losing 4 games straight (last 2 plus most likely KC and SF) acceptable to you? If so, good for you. But none of that is done by a team with championship aspirations.

And BTW Sherman was brought in for insurance only, and Neal wasn’t old. But I didn’t like either of those signings. And I was one of the few people on here promoting RoJo when everyone else wanted him gone. But keep talking…

  23. White Tiger Says:

I think Bucs brass DO think they have some talent at WR – especially if they have to consider giving up draft capital to bring on a receiver that isn’t familiar with Coen’s system.

I think Licht has put off Bowles defensive needs long enough. Hopefully we will continue to have the problem of winning too much to get a high draft pick – which means there HAS to be a TRADE for an Edge in the future. Unfortunately, the mid-season window for that option is closing rapidly, so we’ll limp to the off-season for THAT to start.

  24. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

We don’t need a guy that drops balls and then might make a splash play here and there . We need a guy that catches 98% of what comes his way. Sheppard had a sure touchdown and dropped it a couple weeks back and I don’t understand what has happened to McMillan with his drops. A number one reciever ain’t out there to look good, he’s out there to do good..

  25. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Oh yeah don’t want to trade kiss the season good bye if what we saw last week is what got to live with. One trick ponies don’t usually make the playoffs either. Mike ain’t gonna let you try to kill him either. They are so stubborn and really I don’t want to talk about the other side of the ball cause there ain’t enough picks in the draft to do anything about what Bowles dials up. He needs to slow down because that thing they call a secondary ain’t got your back bro.

  26. Beeej Says:

The only thing I can see is spending a draft pick for is an ILB who could be a long-term solution.

  27. Bartow Buc Says:

We have an abundance of offensive talent. I agree McMillan is rising and Trey is too. Just a lot of talent on offense. I’m sure coach Coen

I do think coach Bowles will bring in an edge rusher on defense soon. That’s where our real weakness is and since Vita is not 100% the lack of pressure is even more exaggerated.

    Go Bucs !!

  28. Badbucs Says:

@ Brandon, Roquin Smith is doing pretty good. We need to trade for a good young guy maybe coming off his rookie contract so the other team doesn’t have the leverage. We need an ILB in the worst way. It’s not rocket science. If we give up a draft pick, we’re only losing the salary discount for the rookie contract. We need the infusion of talent if only for the fresh approach and some juice. What we’re doing now isn’t cutting it. Agreed though, trading for washed up losers on the cheap doesn’t work either. Too much time in the ice tub.

  29. Doughboy Says:

DEFENSE DEFENSE! Everyone is thinking offense. We’re scoring we can’t stop them from out scoring.

  30. BucsfaninOregon Says:

Attention: Earth to Bucsfans…We are not trading for anyone!

A new face, especially if it is a respected one, would likely upset the apple cart. Imagine a guy like Reddit coming in and after a few games announcing his retirement and saying this defensive program is high school level. That would vaporize Bowles and Licht in one interview. They don’t want to take that chance. Better to blow smoke on the Glasiers and try to get another year out of their gig.
We are what we are- -regardless as we watch others improve as they move on with the rest of the season.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

So what that you lose a future 1st ball HOF, and a former ALL-PRO who was leading the league in receiving. Nah dawg, it’s next man up! Just grab some scrub off the practice squad and put them in – it’s basically the same thing.

Sort of makes you wonder why the Bucs pay big money to WRs if you can just pick any random person off the street and play them and expect no drop-off.

  32. Ed Says:

I’m ok with this offense other than not properly using Sean Tucker. He showed power and speed and is the type of runner that the Bucs need to set a tone of physicality. White isn’t that back.

The real issue is the porous basement dwelling defense. If Bowles cannot coach simplify his system and patch up the giant passing lane holes in the secondary immediately I think they are an under .500 team. Even with an offense scoring 25-30 points a game the opponents are eating up giant chunks or yardage and time of possession is keeping the Bucs from controlling the clock.

This is all on Bowles for not coming up with a scheme to cut down the passing yards and big plays. Way too much passive tackling. It is embarrassing to watch such a soft defensive effort every game the last 4 games.

  33. ThatAintRight!! Says:

Everyone’s got an opinion , but if anyone cares about mine here it is.

I don’t think the TB Bucs need a WR. I think their WR corps even without the injured Mike Evans (GodZiilla) & Chris Godwin is fine.

Rakim Jarrett before the injury was making the team and was looking awesome. He made a play the other for a big FD and he’s going to get his opportunity to shine. Then we still have guys too fill the void in Sterling Shepherd, Trey Palmer , Jalen McMillan.

You know granted Jalen is a rookie and still needs some work to try and find ways to get himself open he has the tools and guys in his locker room that can help him grow as a player on this team. Then there also is Ryan Miller he kinda reminds me of a Scotty Miller meets Wes Welker Wr. He’s talented enough just needs the opportunity to prove it.

If Tampa Bay should trade for anyone it should be for Jalen Ramsey CB Miami and then also Miami DE Calais Campbell. That man should be playing for a winner. TB Bucs get those two guys and our defense suddenly becomes a huge problem.

Zyon McCullom is turning into a beast and maybe one of the most valuable CBs in the game, however he’s not enough him and Winfield on one side is a great problem, but it’s still not nearly enough. Jamel Dean is still playing solid but he too is injured right now and there’s no way to fix that problem.

Young inexperienced players aren’t saving the day, this is a passing league. Have to have outside CBs ready to take reps and run a lot every week in game.
Funderburk i was rooting for, but he’s not even close to ready. ILB Kj Britt also is too slow and can’t cover anyone. He belongs back on Special Teams. He excelled there at least. Deion Jones at ILB makes more sense. Wait we don’t want to win another SB clearly.

  34. Scott Says:

Wish they could get Thielen for the slot

  35. PoeYucsFan Says:

After paying Evans and Mayfield to stay…they COULDN’T trade for anyone except Willie Maes Hays….if they WANTED to!
It would have forced their hands to cut Godwin for enough money to trade for someone decent, knowing that another team would scoop him up for more money. They’re backed into a financial corner.
What Bowles needs to worry about more is his sloppy, undisciplined, no-tackeling, slippery-handed defense.

Oh….and P.S…..just in case Bowles happens to read this….STOP WOTH THE 2002 ZONE DEFENSE ALREADY!!! You’re literally the ONLY relic that still uses it as a CONSTANT defensive scheme for 99.9999% of the game.

  36. Pewter Power Says:

Why trade for a receiver lol we got Rakim Jarrett fresh off IR, Ryan Miller from the practice squad and we signed Dennis Houston to the practice squad haha the cavalry has arrived, that’s about as good as Jason licht will ever do as far as in season transactions

  37. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

I think that the no real excuse for not getting a reciever is lame. Most teams do what they should do in their situation and I hope the Glasers keep a receipt. We got five ball droppers and that spells sitting at home when the playoffs start. Licht needs a reality check to let him know that he is replaceable.
