Dixie Chicks’ Defense Just Not That Good

October 26th, 2024

Soft defense.

If ever there is a salve to ease the pain of the Bucs offense losing Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, Warren Sharp’s outfit has found it.

Atlanta’s defense is a wet noodle.

Here are a couple of nuggets highlighted by Hribar of Sharp Football Analysis:

* Atlanta has allowed 4.9 scoring plays per game, tied for 29th in the league.

* The Falcons are 31st in success rate defending passing plays (51.6%).

So teams have success against Atlanta with both the run and the pass. That makes Joe feel a little better.

Joe doesn’t believe the Bucs want to launch 30 passes tomorrow unless the game gets out of hand. Almost in a snap of the finger Monday night, the Bucs went from an air-based offense to what Joe suspects will be the offensive line rounding into form and having success running the ball as a ground-and-pound team.

No one on this offense puts fear into any defense now

  2. Colonel Angus Says:

We are gonna find out how creative Coen is. Need to get all 3 of the RB’s involved, give Otten a bigger roll. Lets get Palmer out in space and use that speed. Coen is gonna have to earn that paycheck. Of course it doesn’t matter if our defense doesn’t show up. Beat the Falcons and we limp into the BYE at 5-5 at worst. Hopefully we get Evans back after that and go from there.

  3. Tye Says:

Have you seen how many points the Bucs defense gives up every week?
    Nothing to be confident about!

  4. LakelandBuc Says:

There’s not a good defense in the weakest division in NFL history

They all suck, all four of them

  5. Al Says:

lol. bucs are one of worst teams against the run. 924 yards and 8 tds. its just a myth that keeps being repeated.

  6. LakelandBuc Says:

Are there any good defenses in the NFC South?

  7. John Sinclear Says:

Bucs defense “just not that good” either. Need to tighten it up, allow no more than 17 points per game from here on out.

  8. PSL Bob Says:

Every time Joe identifies a “weakness” in an opponent’s defense, they perform as if that was their strongest area. If I recall, Mayfield was intercepted several times the last time we played. I’m more worried about what Cousins will do to our secondary. Bowles needs to scheme a defense that performs like a blanket, not a sieve.

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Al … ‘its just a myth that keeps being repeated.’

Not sure what you’re driving at Al. In terms of Yardage Allowed, Bucs rank #19 against the run (924 yds allowed) and #29 against the pass (1778 yds allowed). That gives us an overall #29 ranking in Total Yardage Allowed (2702 Yds Allowed). That’s not very good (understatement). And the picture isn’t much brighter when it comes to Points Allowed (we rank #28 in the NFL with 182 Pts Allowed … 26.0 PPG average).

For a defense that’s always prided itself in stopping the run, this Bucs’ defense is doing terrible. And for a defense that very heavily blitzes to pressure the QB, we’re doing miserable there too. It’s almost like we’ve got multiple weaknesses, and we’re playing like the little Dutch boy trying to plug the holes in the dike. Eventually you run out of plugs.

  10. Cybetsecurity_intern Says:

Seriously??? This is hilarious. Have you seen our defense? They are 3 and 26 outside of kicking range and we all wait at first down line and let them hit the fg. BS

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

LMAO. If the Falcons Defense is not that good, then what the hell is ours?

  12. Josh Says:

I said it last year, and I’ll say it again this year: coaching is vital at the NFL level. Everyone has talent at this stage, but the question is, how will you utilize it? Scheme is crucial—often referred to as the X’s and O’s or the Jimmies and Joes. At the NFL level, there are no “Just a Guys” (JAGs); if there are, they should be cut. With only 1.6% of college players making it to the NFL, there is a pool of 98.4% of players each year. Don’t tell me there isn’t a significant amount of missed talent out there each and every year.

Starting KJ Britt at this point and not trying the available depth is BAD COACHING! It literally cannot get any worse than the defense is at a certain point you have to admit what your doing isn’t working and adjust or YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!!

  13. Bucsfan Says:

Bucs have a score to settle with Atlanta and they will win Sunday guaranteed.

  14. LakelandBuc Says:

Two weak defenses going at it

  15. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

…Need to tighten it up, allow no more than 17 points per game from here on out.”

John, my brother, please put the pipe down!

The only way the Falcons stay near 17 points is if the Bucs can run the ball and play keep away. Our D will not be the reason the Falcons score so. little. And since ATL is expecting us to run the heck out of the ball, that is going to be tough. Possible, but tough.

  16. LakelandBuc Says:

    Lol

  17. Saskbucs Says:

Falcons still missing Andersen and Simmons out won’t hurt our cause. They still playing back up C?

Bowles saves himself or the players save Bowles lots in situations like these. Usually he does coach a decent game when his back is against the wall and I hope that happens again this week.

Gonna be tough to scheme and protect Britt out there minus Dean Hall and Tykee. Secondary depth is busted.

  18. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

The article goes both ways. Substitute in the article the word “Bucs for Falcons”.

  19. Mhystc Says:

“ Falcons defense is not the at good. “ well they are ranked 24th in the league and we are 31st.. so ours is definitely worse. Especially when we have a “ defensive minded coach. “

  20. Usfbuc Says:

Hope we pull off the win

  21. Jordan Says:

Lots of differences in this game. We didn’t have Antoine Winfield, Goedeke, or Calijah Kancey the first matchup.

Falcons are coming off a pretty bad ass whooping by the Seahawks at home too. Should be lots of nuggets in that game for Coen.

We have to control time of possession in this game to win. Palmer is really the only huge explosive play guy left in the passing game.

  22. HC Grover Says:

Thank goodness our D is sooo much better. That is why they whupped us. Our easy schedule after the bye should help us to get to .500 Bowles Shang Gri La 8-9 or 9-8

  23. LakelandBuc Says:

The Bucs can’t afford to lose this game
This is their most important game this season
If we lose, the Falcons go to 4-0 in the division
With Carolina and New Orleans left

If they go 6-0 in the division
I serious doubt if we can win the division

  24. IndioMike Says:

Those who live in glass houses, should not be throwing stones.

  25. BucsfaninOregon Says:

I follow two teams. The Bucs, since I lived in beautiful Dunedin for 25 years and the 49rs, since that is my home town team (I had season tickets to Candlestick and !!!Kesar Stadium!!!).

Both teams have been devastated by injuries. We all know our injury problems, but how about losing the League MVP so far this year? They also just lost heir #1 receiver for the year.

That is where the teams differ. In the SF Chronicle today they have a full page devoted to NFL players the 49rs might be interested in trading for before the deadline. Here, all I hear is crickets!! The 49rs are trying to get to the SB. I thought the Bucs were trying too. The two teams sure are trying different pathways.

I truly believe that the Bucs are afraid to add a high profile player to this “well oiled team”. Imagine an edge rusher coming to this team and being asked by Bowles to pass cover (like JTS). Them imagine the new, established player calling out our crazy defense. For me, that’s an EZ thing to imagine.

  26. Pewter Power Says:

Drake London is a below average receiver and Bowles gave up 154 yards when the most he’s had is 74 in a gam otherwise. Bowles pass defense is ranked worse.

We were all smiles against Philly when they were down their top 3 receivers against us. Trey, McMillan and shep are just as good as what Atlanta has so bring it. ONLY EXCUSE FOR LOSING THIS GAME IS TODD BOWLES IS OUR HEAD COACH

  27. Jeff Says:

    Falcons 40 Yucs 13.

  28. VOT Says:

The Todd script is 5-5 at the bye, win 5 of 7 when Evans comes back with a much kinder schedule, and pray ATL folds

The entire team is Jeckyl and Hyde – never know which one is gonna show up week to week – or quarter to quarter really

Mentally weak teams are just products of their coaching environment as we have witnessed many, many times as Bucs fans

  29. Joe Mac Says:

Izien needs to start alongside Winfield.

I love Whitehead but he’s a liability alongside Britt.

Izien and Winfield are short. But solid and smart.

Britt needs to go back to Special Teams captain. Which is still an honor.

Dean got hurt because he didn’t want to hurt the saints receiver. He could have killed him. I respect Dean. He sacrificed himself for that man. Solid sportsmanship.

But his knee bent very strangely. He has a history of knee issues.

I think Dean would make a good center field Free Safety to go with Winfield and Izien. But I doubt he could pick it up.

But his length and speed and long arms would make a cool FS experiment.

Is Tykes Smith okay? I love him. He seems tough and humble.

Funky Mc Funkerberg is also looking sharp.

I like corners with that sharp face. He’s got it.

Don’t give up oh ye of little faith!

    Go Bucs!!

  30. Bucswin! Says:

#teampositive Baker will show why he is one of the best in the league. Time to Bake. Go BUCS

  31. Bill in Seminole Says:

We have a running back in Rachad White who seems to often takes steps without moving forward when running with the ball but once going is an goood runner and a better receiver. Doesn’t that suggest using screen passes to White against Atlanta’s linebackers or even using White as a wideout?

  32. Jackson Says:

Bucs Defense Just Not That Good

    There, fixed it for you.

  33. BucaneroJim Says:

    Col. Angus
“We are gonna find out how creative Coen is. Need to get all 3 of the RB’s involved, give Otten a bigger roll. Lets get Palmer out in space and use that speed. Coen is gonna have to earn that paycheck.”

Agreed… but, I believe Coen has and will be earning his paycheck. Depends more on whether we get hot or cold Baker. We saw this up/down last year. Was hoping he could settle in with the Bucs, thrive with our support and become a consistent winner. Like to be wrong, but its looking like Baker will always be a middle of the road QB. And no, I am not calling for Trask.

  34. Cobraboy Says:

    Birds D > Bucs D

  35. Buc1987 Says:

This is going to suck without Godwin and Evans!

  36. Defense Rules Says:

Having both Evans & Godwin out really sucks, but we’ve still got some formidable weapons & a QB who knows how use them. Wouldn’t be surprised to see our offense still put up 28-30 points tomorrow. And if all 3 RBs go, we’ll probably go even heavier on the run than we have been.

Big question mark is our defense. I think that Bowles can make some adjustments for Britt, but after relooking at the Ravens’ game stats, Britt wasn’t as big a problem as I initially thought. Ravens ran the ball 30 times; 7 runs were explosive (over 10 yards) and totalled 191 yards (27.3 YPC). Their remaining 23 runs totalled only 53 yards (2.3 YPC). Obviously several MAJOR breakdowns killed us and the majority were on the LEFT side.

o Lamar had 2 rushes around Left End for 28 yds total. He also had another over Left Tackle for 11 yds.
o Henry had 1 rush around Left End for 81 yds, another over Left Tackle for 39 yds, and another over Right Guard for 13 yds.
o Flowers had 1 rush around Right End for 19 yards.

Bottom line: our contain sucked, especially on the LEFT side.

Lamar was 17-for-22 passing for 281 yards. He completed 2
deep passes for 108 yards (1 for a TD), plus he had 1 Incomplete deep pass. That’s 2 more explosive plays allowed, for a total of 9 explosive plays. Those 9 plays accounted for only 17% of the Ravens total plays, but provided 299 yards of Ravens’ offense … 57% of their total. That’s pretty sad.

Bottom line: it’s not ALL on Britt by any means. Our OLBs failed to provide adequate contain and our Secondary got caught with their pants down on 2 of 3 deep passes. Explosive plays are very costly. That needs to be fixed, quickly.

  37. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I’ll say this: our offensive line better show up manana otherwise this one will get out of hand early, and I believe that they will show up. I hope that’s good enough to win…

  38. LakelandBuc Says:

    Defense Rules,

    I agree
It seems like our Defense Ends, OLBs can never hold the outside
And we’re not any much from the SS

  39. Bojim Says:

We get to see how Coen will scheme this one. Fingers crossed.

  40. Badbucs Says:

The fact the Bucs refuse to go get some help at MLB says it all. We’re stuck with this ineffective defensive scheme and some marginal players (some from injury, some we haven’t been able to replace yet) until the end of the year. There will be no cavalry to the rescue.
Todd has been exposed. All the NFL knows how to out wit his defense. He has to hire a DC for a fresh approach
It costs no draft picks and doesn’t affect the cap. Presto – instant infusion of inspiration. Sure it could tn offeake a few games but when you’re giving up 500 and last in the league, try something. Probably Todd is too stubborn and prideful to give up the reigns. Jason got him an offense and now his narcissism will tank our season.
Give it up Todd. Get a DC like every other team in the NFL. You’re not that special. Look at the scoreboard.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

    Well said Badbucs.

  42. Badbucs Says:

    Could take a few games

  43. GoneGator Says:

Unless our improvements in the run game were an illusion or luck we should be able to run against Atlanta. Hopefully they (the birds) come into the game overconfident.

Lots of pressure on a lot of people this game.
Make no mistake, this is a BIG GAME. Turning point. Either we’re back in control of our own destiny or we’re relinquishing our claim to the division. If they beat us twice they deserve to win it.

We should have beaten Atlanta in game 1. We were competitive in the Ravens game, caught some bad breaks and had some breakdowns that cost us our chance.

We make a statement this week…. One way or another 🤞🏼🤘🏼

  44. Pewter Power Says:

Sounds good BadBucs but he’s got two co defensive coordinators and specifically said he doesn’t want to give up play calling and if he did he’d just give it to Kacy Rodgers. Maybe Todd is a stubborn old dinosaur like lovie.

If you don’t have the edge rushers to get home, your linebackers aren’t quick anymore how is it possible you wouldn’t adjust your play style? His defense has been in place since Winston was here so can’t keep blaming communication issues

  45. Bartow Buc Says:

Agree this is a HUGE game so hang onto your chairs all armchair quarterbacks ! Love all your comments !!

Maybe it’s time we win one in the Creamsicle uniforms ! Even though no one favors the Bucs to win ( they rarely do ) I believe in the Bucs talent and our coaches experience to provide the inspirational leadership the players need to win this one.

Both teams are coming off losses. Bucs have home field advantage. If the Bucs can pressure and sack Cousins they can win it.

    Go Bucs !! L G !!!

  46. Timbo Slice Says:

Our defense isn’t good either. And theirs was good enough to win the first time around.

  47. StormyInFl Says:

The Bucs defense is awful and worse than Atlanta’s. Not sure this is something to hang your hat on.

  48. Dave Pear Says:

    Raheehaw > Tood Blowes

  49. adam from ny Says:

    all 3 rb’s should total about 45…touches

    – i want to see tucker get 15 carries
    – rachaad get 10
    – bucky get 10

and def 10 receptions for the group…maybe more…

i wouldn’t be opposed to almost 50 touches for this trifecta

  50. adam from ny Says:

    45 touches sounds about right…

tape a post it to todd’s door so he knows when he arrives at his office in the morning

  51. Rod Munch Says:

“Mayfield has only had 41 dropbacks since the start of last season with both Godwin and Evans off the field at the same time.

He was 21-of-38 (55.3%) on those plays for 4.3 yards per pass attempt.”

    ———–

Wow… that’s terrible. However I’d guess most of that is last year. Hopefully Coppertop has a gameplan ready for the WR’s not being able to get open. However, on the good side, Sterling and McMillan are both upgrades over the depth chart last year. But hopefully, as mentioned by a lot of people here, they are creative with how they use White and feed him the ball in the passing game. If he played a Deebo role in the offense, he’d probably be really good at it, and make himself a ton of money.

    all 3 rb’s should total about 45…touches

    ———

    Yeah, nothing like losing 42-7.

But at least they established the run.

  53. Lightningvinny Says:

White will have a huge game ,,, 180 total yards 2 TD,,, does that give us the win,,, no idea ,,, the o isn’t our problem ,,, giving up every 3rd and 10+ this year could be why

  54. Dave Pear Says:

Every defense is better than the Todd.

  55. adam from ny Says:

    rod –

how many carries and total touches do you have our group of 3 rb’s getting then…?

    give me a number rod…

    spill it

  56. adam from ny Says:

i think 35 carries and 10 receptions for the group is on point

  57. adam from ny Says:

the 3 backs had 34 touches last monday night vs the ravens…

it’ll def bump up to 45 this game…

50 might be a reach, but you never know

  58. Dave Pear Says:

Todd and the defense are great.

  59. Idroolpewter&red Says:

I don’t know what to think of this game. If Bucs win, great, but I’m not looking forward to getting pounded by KC next week. It was weird thinking the other night about how good the Bucs offense is compared to the defense (when has that ever happened?), but then Godwin got injured. Weird season, probably a weird game tomorrow.
