Defense Got Tired Of Being Abused By Spencer Rattler

October 13th, 2024

Defense came together.

It looked like a horror show in the making, maybe one of the worst in Bucs history, which is saying quite a lot.

The Bucs jumped out to a 17-0 lead and it seemed the Bucs were going to blast the slimy Saints out of Lincoln’s Tomb.

The slimy Saints had other ideas. Shockingly, the Bucs decided initially they didn’t have to go after Spencer Rattler, the fifth-round draft pick rookie quarterback who at times was sensational in college.

Rattler looked in the first half like he was back at Oklahoma playing for Lincoln Riley, shredding that no-defense league he played in there. At one point, Rattler was an obscene 11 of 14. Then the Bucs decided they’d had enough en route to a 51-27 win.

Joe spoke to Logan Hall and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka after the game and both said the defense got together with defensive coaches and everyone agreed: They couldn’t let Rattler have so much time he could order a roast beef po’ boy from Parkway Bakery via Uber Eats before he getting rid of the ball.

The slimy Saints were without possibly their best receiver, Chris Olave (who the Bucs knocked out of the game) and their starting quarterback. But it looked as if the Bucs were playing the 1984 49ers. It was a nightmare, an absolute nightmare.

Hall said communication was the issue. Nothing was being coordinated properly, which must happen for the defense to run smoothly and efficiently.

“It’s like at least nine guy are freelancing,” JTS said of how the defense looks when not coordinated in-synch or “communication” is not on the same page.

Specifically, Hall said, the defense knew they had to get after Rattler. And they did.

In the slimy Saints’ final possession of the first half, Rattler had Bucs in his face on all three dropbacks. The first two, Rattler threw the ball away to avoid getting hit. The third pass was a near pick.

Rattler was never remotely the same after that. He had 11 more completions the rest of the game in 23 attempts.

“We couldn’t let him get out of the pocket and pick us apart,” JTS said of Rattler.

“Once we all got on the same page, we were able to get after him,” Hall said of the defense adjusting to Rattler.

And that adjustment, to constantly pressure Rattler, to get someone in his face at all times, turned Rattler from Roger Staubach into the rookie fifth-round pick he was.

And the Bucs then owned the slimy Saints and shut them out in the second half.

  2. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Well they better all make sure on the same page for the Ravens. Rattler ain’t no Lamar Jackson

  3. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

The game was a tale of 2 halves. The second half was a sight for sore eyes! Good job Bucs!
That running game was outstanding! Best I’ve seen in a very long time.

  4. geno711 Says:

Dennis Allen is 1 and 5 against the Bucs. I predict if he loses to us again this year, he will not be their coach next year.

  5. Curse of Gruden Says:

That story is encouraging to hear. Adjustments!

  6. DBS Says:

Adjustments. Did someone pull the coach aside with a dictionary and explain what it means? Has he finally seen the light?

  7. Woodenman Says:

Where is JEFF at of course no where to be found?

  8. Dave Pear Says:

    Earth to Todd —

Why always “communication issues?” What do you teach? Never mind. Nothing.

Shocking they were playing soft? No. It’s Todd. He never got after Cousons and gave the game away to him. He’s a joke. A clown. Lucky to have an offensive coach who knows his job and ignored the Todd turtle today.

    Robert Saleh for DC.

Good to see the defensive linemen making gameplan adjustments. I know the players love Bowles but he can’t be gone soon enough in terms of being an XO’s coach.

Also, if you find yourself in NOLA, would highly recommend a roast beef poboy from Parkway.

How and why do we keep
    Hearing about communication.
    Something is definitely wrong
    With coaching…

You guys complaining after an awesome win?? Come on…

Dave Pear – why so negative?

This was a great team win, by a team that didn’t know if their homes are even ok. Get a life guys – this was a great win! Not perfect, but very rewarding. Complaining to complain is weak.

Trade Dean for a Pass Rusher once his hammy heals

Happy to have Our Players back from injury. Loved the “No Quit” Attitude. Oh My, A Real Running Game! What A Wonderful and Beautiful Complete Team Effort.(Gasp!) Thanks So Much, Go Bucs.

  14. 1#bucsfan Says:

Simeon did you see what happened to dean’s back up when he left ? If we had hall to replace Dean I would be down. Rattler picked on dean’s replacement a better QB would have eaten funderbunk alive

  15. Simeon4HOF Says:

Understood, but Zyon is playing like our #1 CB now. If Hall comes back or Smith or Izien can play more Corner just a fleeting thought. Starving for a 2nd Edge Rusher to emerge, and Tykee Smith shined today

  16. Steven007 Says:

Pear is on his period. Unfortunately he has his period everyday 24/7 365. The team dropping a 50 burger obviously doesn’t change that. He has an insatiable hatred for the coach. Even though we are 4-2. Even though we’ve won the division for 3 years. He deserves to cheer for a New York team. We’ve got enough fans here who actually can enjoy the wins and save their disdain for the losses.

  17. Dave Pear Says:

Todd wins when his offense scores 50. Can’t win when they score 34. Defensive genius. Not. Time out savant. Not. Game mangler? You bet.

    Thank you Liam.

  18. Ben Says:

Its concerning that this happens so often with Rookie and back up QBs. It was noted all week that we cant let Rattler but us. Glad the D stepped up in the 2nd half, but that 2nd Q was inexcuseable. Great W by the offense, this defense needs work! Imagine holding teams to under 20 pts like last year and scoring like we are now. That is a contender if they can beat the Falcons.

  19. BigBucsFan Says:

74 bucs fan well said…… Winning by 20 plus points and people still want to pick and nitpick every negativity. Approaching halftime the saints was a wounded animal they decided to fight for their lives. And that type of desperation you’re bound to land a blow or two doesn’t mean you’re going to turn everything around but they’re going to try it’s the teams job to stop and they did. At this point I just feel some of these fans are reflecting the negativity from their own life. Bucs are sitting at four and two with a high-powered offense and a defense that is getting better especially as the injured return. Having more fun and feel more excitement this season than I did even for 2020, best thing is is we know our quarterback is not on a 2 to 3 year window shelf life this team has a minimum of five to six year run with this roster my opinion of course…. Let’s go bus

Wish they got tired of being abused by Cousins last week too.

  21. EasyEd Says:

White looks like he would be a solid full time back good for 20 carries a game, with decent results with a decent offensive line. Irving and Tucker look like they would be great third down and.+5 to go backs. But maybe the reverse is true. White is big enough and fast enough to be a beast on screens and short routes. Irving is patient and finds holes when they develop, and yesterday Tucker looked like he can too. Sure, it’s only one game, but Imagine what it would be like to have a rotation of three solid running backs. The stuff dreams are made of…..

  22. Daniel Z Says:

I’m glad they were able to flip the switch, communicate, and play solid defense. However, one has to wonder why they weren’t ready to do that from the start of the game?!?!?!? You can get away with that against mediocre teams, but if we roll up against the Ravens unprepared, they’ll shred us apart.

  23. BakerBucs says Says:

Pear says,so the 3 out of 4 wins were under 50 points u r calculations as usual r off by u r usual nasty post let’s remember Bowles D was the reason we won a S(Bowl) moron Do u come on this site just to b a Dhead or r u really Dless?

  24. BakerBucs says Says:

U mean they weren’t playing good D from the beginning, wasn’t the 2nd score a D touchdown, plz make sense when u post or at least reread the post

  25. drdneast Says:

Rattler got rattled. In the first half the majority of Rattler’s completions came on bootlegs where he was able to scan the field without the defense swarming around him. Either by better play or by scheme the Bucs didn’t allow him the same luxury in the second half and when he did roll out her usually had a defenders hot breath on his back or in his face. It made a big difference.
