Containing Lamar Jackson

October 18th, 2024

Defensive assistant Larry Foote.

It sounds like the Bucs have resigned themselves to the notion that Crows quarterback Lamar Jackson will burn their defense.

Bucs coaches seem to be crossing their fingers that the wounds won’t be third-degree.

Inside linebackers coach/run stopping coordinator Larry Foote was asked today how does a defense combat Jackson. Foote suggested seeking divine intervention.

“First, you’ve got to pray,” Foote said. “You’ve just got to pray. You’ve got to hope and you’ve got to wish.

“It’s going to take a group effort – even the [safeties]. Everybody is going to have to be responsible for him. At the end of the day, when he drops back and decides to run, it’s going to be a challenge.

“When he does get tackled, it’s a shoe-string tackle – that’s when the prayers are going to be needed. We’ve got a nice plan for him, but his athleticism and him being a quarterback…We’re at his mercy at times. … We can’t let him kill us.”

Again, Joe thinks Bucs coaches are OK with Jackson throwing and running for touchdowns, so long as he doesn’t throw and run for too many.

Could it be that, given how well the Bucs ran the ball last week against the slimy Saints, the Bucs will try to ground and pound the Crows while playing keepaway?

Contain Jackson with a s#!t-ton of Buc scoring.

  2. BucsBeast Says:

We need a spy with crafty blitzing. Lamar does have accuracy issues under pressure.

  3. Boss Says:

put greir in for Britt…give the rook a shot!

  4. GoneGator Says:

Of course we’re going to blow smoke up Lamar’s butt. We want him feeling over confident 👍🏼

  5. drdneast Says:

Why give the Ravens QB bulletin board material. Always praised your competion, that way if you beat them you look even better.

Joe … ‘Could it be that, given how well the Bucs ran the ball last week against the slimy Saints, the Bucs will try to ground and pound the Crows while playing keepaway?’

Wrong bottom line IMO Joe. IF the Bucs ‘ground & pound’ we’ll lose. Ravens’ defense is #1 against the run for a reason: the most they’ve given up in any one game is 81 yds of rushing (to the Bills). If we try to play their game, we’re toast.

Baker is very good at the quick, short passing game (71% on the year). That’s good enough to sustain drives & score TDs. We’ve got the weapons to pull that off and MAYBE turn up the running game in the 4th qtr if we’ve worn out the Ravens’ defense.

  7. Rob in Land O' Lakes Says:

    1. Contain him
    2. Spy him with Winfield’
    3. Force him to check down.

  8. LakelandBuc Says:

They need to focus on stopping the Baltimore Ravens, not stopping Lamar Jackson. One player can’t beat you, it takes a team effort to beat you. Their game plan should be to slow the Ravens offense. And to punish the Ravens defense. No sports team in the world is unbeatable.

  9. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Reunite Bowles with Jamal Adams and have him play Box Saftey/MLB next to David.

  10. orlbucfan Says:

Coen needs to trust and unleash his offense. Ravens have never played a strong Bucs offense. Bucs do that and they will win.

  11. Saskbucs Says:

Don’t mind that idea StickinUp4Centers but is Adams washed? Haven’t seen or heard of him doing much in a couple years. I know he was injured for awhile.

Our defensive front is going to have to be very disciplined this week, needs to be JTS best game of the season. He needs to hold that edge and take good angles, he is the most athletic of our OLBs and will be important in contain. We need to keep tight coverage on Flowers and smother those TEs while keeping everything in front of us.

Flying into the backfield and getting behind Jackson is obviously a recipe for disaster.

  12. Stpetematt Says:

Wanna know how to contain Lamar Jackson? Limit his possessions by running 4.3 speed Sean Tucker all day and burning up the clock.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

I don’t think we stop their Offense with our Defense. But we can slow them down enough to outscore them. Our Offense is going to have to be on point Monday night though.

  14. Hodad Says:

I remember when Vick was running wild through the league. The week before playing the Bucs he torched the Vikings running. Then he played against Mr Derrick Brooks, and he went nowhere. Brooks was the perfect spy. Those were the days.

  15. Dave Pear Says:

Since Blo Nix torched the Bucs and so did Rattled for a half/quarter, it stands to reason that Lamar is licking his chops like a hungry dog eyeing a steak.

  16. Buc4evr Says:

Winfield and Smith need to be spies. Lamar needs to be hit hard and often.

  17. GoneGator Says:

Limit their run game on early downs and keep him in the pocket and Zyon will get another pick this week. Wouldn’t be shocked to see a strip sack of him too.

We need to have another fast start and stay aggressive. Our goal should be 50-60 minimum on offense every game! 🙂

  18. BillyBucco Says:

I really think Kancey should play over their LG. He is 6’8” and 380. No way can he stop Kancey’s quickness. They would most likely have to double him, which would leave Vita 1 on 1. I think an Interior rush is huge in this game.
If we find it we can absolutely pressure Lamar.

  19. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Go get Maxx Crosby.

  20. Esteban85 Says:

I agree Sask, I think the edge play will be very important. Pressure from Kancey will also be important. This team is beatable, and Lamar Jackson is human, we just can’t have JTS & Yaya letting the edge get blown up by Jackson and Henry. Contain them to running between the tackles and I think we have a chance. Also our run game must be a factor in this game despite their #1 run defense. The best way to slow down an offense is to keep their asses on the sidelines.

  21. garro Says:

Wow he must have taken lessons from Bowles. Pray!?!?

What page is that in the play book coach?

    Come on dude!

    Go Bucs!

  22. Kenton Smith Says:

Still early in the season. Last year’s MVP and a running back who is probably top 5 in NFL history. Henry looks as fast as rookie. Amazing. No, we won’t be shutting them out. They’ll try to be the more physical team. We’ll be happy to oblige them and try to match their physicality. Probably a lower scoring game than most are thinking. If we win the turnover battle it would sure help. A game like this might come down to QB play. I think it will. I’ll take the Bucs 24 – 7. In a statement game. We’re getting closer to having the defense nobody wants to play against. Tip of the day – Bet the under.

  23. Neckbone Says:

I remember when Kiffen used 55 Brooks to spy and shut down Michael Vick back in ’02. I wonder if 54 David could be used the same way against Jackson.

  24. Cobraboy Says:

This game will show us what this Buc team edition is.

    I still don’t know.

They have looked excellent, and they have looked abysmal.

    Which team shows up?

Overall, the Crowes have been more consistent.

I expect a track meet. I’m not sure either D can consistently stop the other team, but I give the nod to the Crows D overall. But even that is hard to tell because Vea and Kancey missed several games, and they make a big difference.
