Chris Godwin, Mike Evans Nearly Equal In Percentage Of Targets From Baker Mayfield

October 8th, 2024

Catching up.

Until recently, Bucs receiver Chris Godwin was getting roughly a third of all Bucs targets from Baker Mayfield. But the target percentage is beginning to even out.

Per Sam Hoppen, a data scientist with Fantasy Pros, Godwin still leads the Bucs in percentage of targets after five games. Godwin has 26.3 percent of Mayfield’s targets. Mike Evans has crept back to be the second-most targeted at 23.7 percent.

Joe guesses one reason Evans is nearing Godwin’s target percentage is defenses are keying more on Godwin.

The third-most targeted Bucs receiver by percentage? That would be tight end Cade Otton. He has 16.4 percent of Mayfield’s targets.

Hodden only documents the top-three for each team.

Joe would rather see Rachaad White get more targets than Otton. Nothing against Otton, but when White gets the ball in the passing game, he’s a constant threat to take the ball to the house.

Joe doesn’t believe Otton is much of a threat to score unless the Bucs are in the red zone.

Seems like an excellent split to me. The Bucs are blessed to have two great WR’s who can keep their egos in check!

It’d be nice if Baker could hit a higher percentage of his down the field throws. It would really boost Mike’s numbers and put the offense over the top.

  3. Gipper Says:

Baker will get deeper passes completed if he gets time to throw. Need Goedke back for this to happen. Also, if run game forces safeties up from 2 High that will help with deeper routes. Feel certain as Barton gets settled and when Goedke gets back we will see more deep bombs and deep seam routes.

    @Gipper I hope you’re right.

So lucky to have Evans and Godwin. Surprised about Otton being 3rd. Agree about White. I actually thought he was the 3rd most targeted.

Hey! Let’s hire newly fired Jest Coach Robert Saleh to be our Defensive Coordinator. He is GREAT at it and WE NEED IT.

  7. Gipper Says:

Like the Saleh idea. Maybe he can pull a few players over from NY Jets? Defense isn’t going to get better with existing personnel. Too many failures last year in crunch time. Winfield healthy will help but there is a much bigger problem at LB.

  8. Koala Says:

We should be running more RB screens. Why we aren’t when we have two fantastic pass catching RBs is mind boggling.

  9. Bucnjim Says:

Evans always gets the best opponent’s CB covering him not to mention sliding coverage his way. No surprise Godwin is open more than not. Need to get everyone involved though that is when we are at our best.

Still going to need major contributions from Jmac and Palmer. If we get that, and Coen plays our cards right, we have 4-5 legit threats to cover every play and keep defenses from over committing to stop Mike and Chris.

IF Todd decides to hire a DC it won’t be Saleh. It’ll be somebody already on staff. The BA/Bowles group are very loyal, sometimes to the point of a fault.
    Can you say Byron Leftwich?

Besides Saleh can use some time off to heal his wounds. It can’t have been easy for Saleh working for Woody Johnson. He’s worth over 3 BILLION but like another famous man whose allegedly worth a billion he got his start as a nepobaby.
Johnson was an heir to the Johnson and Johnson fortune. The wealthy frequently mistake their luck as smarts, the old born on 3rd believing they hit a triple.

Then you add another MAJOR ego to the mix in Aaron Rodgers who is on his last legs trying to extend his career.

I know next to nothing about Saleh other than a few interviews where he seems like a decent guy but the Jets have a way of wrecking careers.

Todd Bowles was the LAST guy to win 10 games for the Jets and that was two coaches and five seasons ago. Bowles win % – .365 his successor Adam Gase won at a .281 clip and Saleh was 20-36 .357 STILL not as good as Bowles!!

The Jets went through a five year slump of losing or .500 seasons after Rex Ryan until Bowles was the ONLY coach to win 10 since Ryan.

Woody Johnson is just as big an idiot as David Tepper. Rodgers and Johnson deserve each other.
