CBS: Bucs Are The Team To Beat In NFC South

October 6th, 2024

Rebound coming?

Joe has to be fair to Jeff Kerr of CBS. What Joe is about to reference was published roughly three hours before the Bucs played the Dixie Chicks on Thursday night.

And we all know what happened.

So Kerr decided to do an overreaction for each NFL team, and then to see if the overreaction has merit or not.

In this case, Kerr’s overreaction is that the NFC South still goes through The Licht House.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
They are the team to beat in the NFC South
Overreaction or reality:
Reality

Only took one game to determine Tampa Bay was going to compete for the division again. Outside of a shocking blemish at home to the Broncos, the Buccaneers have been impressive against three quality opponents (blowing out both the Commanders and Eagles).

The Buccaneers have a brutal schedule, but Baker Mayfield hasn’t missed a beat under Liam Coen and the aging defense still consistently makes plays. Not to mention the Buccaneers have been banged up across the board. This is a good team.

Well, Joe wants to type the Bucs are a good team. But good teams, at least well-coached teams, don’t give up the booty to a one-legged quarterback who couldn’t move out of the pocket to the tune of 509 yards!

And good, well-coached teams absolutely do not try to put a game away with their worst option on offense.

Do the Bucs have the talent to win? Yes. Does Joe think the team will improve when injured stars heal up? Yes. Still, there is a lot to clean up, most of which comes from guys who never step on the field during plays. That was obvious Thursday.

This slimy Saints game a week from today will tell a lot about the Bucs. If they beat New Orleans, things should be OK with a 4-2 record. If they lose, playing meaningful games in January will be in jeopardy.

Yeah, the way the Bucs choked away a key division win in Atlanta really has Joe triggered.

They won’t be hard to beat

Because they’re going to beat themselves

  2. Chris Says:

Why do the media keep calling it an aging defense? When everyone’s healthy, Lavonte is the only starter over the age of 30.

  3. Josh Says:

The referees ultimately decided the outcome of the game. The more I watch the replay of Thursday night’s game, the more frustrated I become, feeling that the refs unfairly impacted the Buccaneers. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that everyone will boycott for competitive fairness; if their team wins, they will watch. I’m guilty of it myself Lol. Honestly the Bucs got more calls when they had Brady other than that the refs always hate on them it feels. I’m sure every fan would say that about their team if asked.

Seriously, though, if they miss a facemask penalty and call a phantom holding instead, what’s to stop the same from happening if they pass the ball? There were multiple missed penalties and opportunities, and watching the replay makes it seem like the NFL has a narrative: that the Falcons are a legitimate Super Bowl contender this year. The pass interference call at the end of the previous week’s game was also questionable. If they lose those two games, their season is essentially over, which doesn’t align with the narrative that the Falcons will win the NFC South.

Go Bucs beat the Refs!! I mean Aints!!! Well both…..

  4. Doughboy Says:

They have already been beaten, so that’s funny.

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

Van Ginkel is Todd’s perfect OLB

  6. Joe in Michigan Says:

Some of you fair weather MFers who are ready to jump ship after a Bucs loss, then back on board after a win need to get a grip.

  7. PSL Bob Says:

Joe in Michigan, I agree. In reading the Open Thread on game night, I’ve never seen so much negativity. This is a good team. They screwed up Thursday night. Just a handful of plays did us in. The last one was Dean jumping up so quickly after tackling the receiver. If he had laid on him just one more second, the game would not have gone to OT and the Bucs win. Granted, they need to reevaluate defensive strategies in the secondary, but offense is solid. Just let them play a complete game and not go into Code Turtle when they have a lead.

  8. Hodad Says:

Defense has been exposed. Hopefully it gets better when we get some players back. Until then we look weak on defense.

  9. LakelandBuc Says:

I’m a Bucs fan for life,

And as a life long Bucs fan, l have to right to call a spade a spade. And this is not the first time to have called out coaches, players, GM, and it won’t be the last . I’ve been doing this since the beginning, since Steve Spurrier took the 1st sorry ass snap for us in 1976.

    With that said,

This is a 500 Coaching staff
And we are a 500 team
If you won’t better results, then get better coaching

Josh I enjoyed your well written post. But I align more with Joe in Michigan. Our team is “the real McCoy”. This last game was a rock in the road of which there will be more this season. Please don’t be a conspiracy theorist. Especially without proof that the refs are in kahoots with the NFL. Because there is none. A few calls didn’t go our way. Message to all fans courtesy of Joe in Michigan – “Get a Grip”.

  12. LVMYBUCS Says:

Hey guys the negativity comes from watching Bowles do the same o crap when he gets a lead which is play scared. YES YES we have a great group of players accept for Dean and I say Dean because he has been on this team long enough to have improved but sucks yes Britts sucks and Smith suck but give then time and again who kept them on the team BOWLES. This is why I say and will continue saying Bowles is not going to get us to the promise land he is not a good head coach never was never will be and is WASTING OUR TALENT!

  13. adam from ny Says:

looks like the falcons might just be coming into ray jay in a few weeks with a 5-2 record…

i’m just prognosticating, but that should be their guesstimated record imho…

they have carolina next on the road, and then an inflated record seattle team coming to see them, before they pop over to ray jay for the throwback game…

so yeah, we done fugged up blowing the game the other night…

  14. LakelandBuc Says:

I have been a Buc fan since Steve Spurrier took the first snap in 1976. And I’ve the worst coaching in the history of this franchise. But I’ve never, ever seen worst coaching than Thursday night game.

    And like l said…this is a 500 coaching staff
That makes us a 500 team
And if you’re satisfied with a 500 team

    Then you stay complacent
Don’t call people who expect more NEGATIVE

    Negative is Accepting losing

  15. adam from ny Says:

    please stop joshing around…

    quit joshing us…

“In reading the Open Thread on game night, I’ve never seen so much negativity. This is a good team.”…PSL
Bob, I agree with you! But, that is exactly why some of us are disgusted with the leadership of this team. They are/should be better than giving us 500 yards to a lawn statue. This is a game we should have won. Bucky’s fumble was unfortunate, but should not have been the deciding factor.

Our pass defense is bad, bad. Why? No talent. Or, making pass rushers drop into coverage. I have seldom seen Braswell and he has a sack. Maybe he should be seen more?

  17. Fred McNeil Says:

We lost for a variety of reasons. Granted, it was a good close game that we could have won with better coaching and a few starters back. Bowles has gotta find a way to protect KJ Britt in pass coverage. It doesn’t sound like Dennis is coming back till maybe December. And as Joe has pointed out…the BUCS have to learn to stick to what they’re good at: passing. I hear the rumblings that Kansey and Winfield might…might maybe be back. Of course playing in the Toilet Dome might not be possible unless they take a boat. I can’t believe they didn’t just tear that hole down after half of New Orleans used it as a giant latrine for a few weeks. Is still must harbor germs, parasites and stench to this very day. That stuff never washes out.

  18. Crickett Baker Says:

I want someone to flat out ask Coen or Mayfield who scripted the plays for the last few minutes and not stop until they get a solid answer.

  19. Beeej Says:

Can’t have 4 starters out and NOT have problems. Right now Dennis seems to be a good upgrade from DW at ILB, but Dennis is probably done for a lot longer than 4 games. LD likely is in his last season, and whoever is replacing HIM isn’t currently on the team. Clearly we can’t have another game with Britt on the field in passing situations. (I suspect that ANY time he’s on the field, it’s gonna turn into a ‘passing situation’) We had a corner playing safety already, THEN we lost the OTHER safety (have no idea who subbed for Whitehead) The 2 guys (Kancey/Vita) who were gonna wreck other team’s O lines have yet to play a game together.

I’m glad we get 10 days off

  20. Bobby Says:

Bucs are thin at middle linebacker, thin at pass rusher too. Team is not going to do well this season unless these issues are fixed and fixed quickly.

  21. Bobby Says:

You know you guys on uour Ira podcast talked about these issues all offseason, training camp, preseason. He we are a qtr into the regular season and these issues are not resolved by Bucs management, very friendly.

  22. Bobby Says:

    Very frustrating*

  23. Miller5252 Says:

For some reason the Bucs just don’t like beating the Saints. The Saints could be winless for the year and will find a way to win. Payton in Denver treated the Bucs like he was still in NO and beat em down. When it mattered most, the Bucs did beat the Saints but for some reason the Bucs like laying turd games against them. Evans always has low yard totals for those games as well. It matters most this coming week……need to thump the saints here!!

  24. LakelandBuc Says:

There’s no excuse for losing a game that you won

  25. LakelandBuc Says:

They players won the game, and the poor coaching gave it back to the Falcons.

  26. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Beeej – LVD said just last week that Sirvocea can replace him when he retires.

  27. Mike Johnson Says:

Nope. Disagree. Not buying it. For now, the Falcons are the NFC South team to beat. They havr beat us and the Saints. And if we fall against the Saints? Then we will be rock bottom.

  28. Josh Says:

I’ll take that as I’m not wanted here…. OK joes I’ll go away sorry to bother you all…

  29. adam from ny Says:

don’t be a big baby josh…weeping, as you rattle your little grubbers while pounding at the keyboard…

    post away foo! 🙂

  30. Josh Says:

No like i have a really good well written post that I have tried to post several times there’s no foul language besides maybe Sabby Piscitelli as in my home that’s a bad word lol but the joes won’t let me post it.

  31. HC Grover Says:

CBS finally gets something right…. they are the team they can beat.

  32. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Josh as a long time JBFer 99% of the time Joe doesn’t pick who or what gets flagged into the mods. He does have to approve it though and that can take time which is ok. It happens to all of us from time to time. Complaining about it is a fast way to PO Joe. Best thing to do is be patient and not take it personal…. Because it’s not.

  33. HC Grover Says:

It only took the Atlanta game to determine that when it counts most….Bowles will Blunder and Squat. he is a natural born squatter,,,,1 point 2 points 3 it does not matter a squat or Blunder is the Bowles way….6-11

  34. Beeej Says:

@Beeej – LVD said just last week that Sirvocea can replace him when he retires”

Well, then whoever replaces DW isn’t on the team right now

  35. rrsrqnc Says:

We are putting a lot of this on Bowles and he is the head coach. We complained about Canales last year, yet still one the division. Is Bowles elite, nope but I am not dismissing him as a really good coach. Everyone has injuries… if anyone watched Chuck’s analysis before the game, he said exactly what the Falcons would do. Go after a slow Britt and also after Dean. Speaking of Bucs past coaches, when the Bucs ran the Tampa 2, it is because they had the players to do it. Many have tried but nobody else has come close, in other words, in Atlanta, Bucs were missing players in the middle of the defense that you have to think would have limited some of that. The Bucs healthy middle, Kancey, Dennis and Winfield. BTW, the refs can miss a lot of calls but when someone goes down by the face mask, that’s not a miss, because the one watching the ball carrier, has one job
