Cade Otton: Baker Mayfield Threw The Perfect Pass

October 13th, 2024

Shows Dad skills after TD catch.

OK, Joe will get this out of the way first: What was Cade Otton doing with the football during today’s win against the slimy Saints?

After the Bucs’ starting tight end caught a very low throw from a hurried Baker Mayfield for an eight-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, the Jumbotron in Lincoln’s Tomb showed after Otton got off the ground, he sort of rocked the football as if he had an infant in his arms and then gently patted the ball.

So as Otton, who is about as laid back as you will ever see an NFL player, was leaving the locker room, Joe asked him what he was doing.

For maybe the first time, Joe saw emotion from Otton. His face lit up and he beamed and laughed, “I was showing off my dad skills!” Otton told Joe, proudly.

Otton and his wife welcomed a baby girl to their young family this summer.

And the patting? Otton explained what that was.

“I was burping the football.”

Joe was impressed with how Otton had to go low to pull the ball in just before it hit the turf. Joe asked him about how hard that was because the ball was not on target, not even close, mostly because Mayfield was about to get drilled. It was like he unloaded at the last split-second.

Otton disagreed. He liked the pass.

“It was perfect,” Otton told Joe. He explained it was so low, Otton knew he wasn’t going to be hit by a defender.

Otton told Joe he would much rather go low to catch a pass and avoid getting hit than having a perfect pass thrown to him where he gets hit and perhaps has the ball knocked loose.

Interesting thought process.

“Baker was actually protecting me by throwing it so low,” Otton said.

    Cade is JAG.

    Need a real starting TE.

  2. D-Mac Says:

If we meet the Lions in the plsyoffs again this year, it looks like they’ll be without Aiden Hutchinson.

  3. geno711 Says:

In a year that really none of the TE’s have done anything special, Cade Otton has been good value.

    All good, learn from it

    Lol… burping the football

Joe – Tom Brady talked all the time about putting the hall low to protect his receivers. This is not a new concept.

Anyway – great win, and thank you Joes for all that you do!

Hoping the best for our Tampa neighbors! Hope you have power or get it very soon!

Cade is next generation Cam Brate. Easy to love as a TE2 but when he is TE1 you need an upgrade. What I will give him kudos for is some improved run blocking this year

I’m sorry but Cade is hurting the team more than helping . His drops are becoming more and more obvious. I hope we are looking for a replacement for him, Dean, and YaYa…

  11. Woodenman Says:

Glad you are not making decisions for this team Billbuc. Might agree on Dean cause he is glass. But not Yaya or Cade .

Great pass and catch, but the zip to Godwin in the end zone who was covered as good as he could’ve been covered is a TD pass that nobody is talking about. Plus, it was an even better catch than a throw because 9 out of 10 NFL receivers wouldn’t have caught that 100+ mph fastball. Go Godwin!!!
