Bucs Cut Jake Camarda

October 22nd, 2024

Done.

Wow, here’s a shocker.

Two years ago the Bucs spent one of those treasured, coveted, can’t-trade-a-pick-for-a-proven-edge-rusher fourth round draft picks on a punter (!) out of Georgia.

Not quite three years later, as legendary former White Sox announcer Hawk Harrelson would holler, “He gone!”

The Bucs released Jake Camarda today.

A tremendous athlete, Camarda looked like a home run pick. No, really. He was arguably one of the better punters in the game in 2022.

What happened to Camarda, who showed signs of slipping late in his second season in the NFL? League folks for years have been trying to figure out why kickers and punters are, well, weird and flame out so quickly.

(Joe always thought Camarda  looked like Yakov Stalin.)

Camarda will get signed by someone else and likely have success. That’s the life of a kicker/punter. Here one day, gone the next week.

It’s also why burning these so-called priceless draft picks on such shaky players is far more often than not a bad gamble.

I’m so curious about what happened. He was fantastic. Then he sucked. Why?!

  2. 813BUCBOI Says:

i guess someone’s head had to roll lol

a win sunday would do wonders for the team and fans lol…

i still think we win 12 games!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  3. Josh Says:

Have you seen Game Day Grace? He seems to be more focused on his life outside of football than on punting, which makes sense to me football is a game theres alot of life after and hes a punter lol. A player’s love for the game significantly impacts how well and how long he plays.

  4. Derek Says:

Bro got married and lost his mojo

  5. darengibo Says:

Wow. Didn’t see him being waived since Gill is not exactly booming it

  6. LakelandBuc Says:

Was he partying with his old pal Stetson Bennett?

  7. Zoocomics Says:

True statement about finding success elsewhere… I still see guys like Caro Santos and Nick Folk kicking in the league, I thought after their short, failed stint in Tampa that their careers would’ve been done.

  8. miken Says:

has to be more to the story. He was so good rhen quickly so bad.

  9. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    Not For Long

  10. Oxycondomns Says:

has to be not taking peds anymore

  11. Anon Says:

I love how Joe started this article. It’s hilarious how much they value picks just to whiff on a punter. Kinda like Bowles and his timeouts.

  12. Pewter Power Says:

I’m gonna hold a punter accountable because he’s crucial to my game day strategy

That’s all you need to know about Todd Bowles. Think he would have ever dared bench Dean just to prove a point even when he’s playing like trash?

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Just like Matt Gay……drafted, sucked…..cut…..Pro Bowl elsewhere

  14. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

Hate to see this, especially since we are not seeing that much in an increase in production without him. Could his problems be associated with the new ST coordinator?

  15. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

Hope he invested his 3 years NFL paycheck well. It must be nice to kick a ball 5 or 6 times a week and make 6 figures. How do you get that far in life and then just flip the switch off. He could regret this for the rest of his life when he has to get a normal job in a few years.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Hey, here we are, big moves at punter! This is what wins championships! Not improving a LB or tackle depth, or going out and getting a WR when you lose both your starters, nope, a free agent punt signing will turn things around and give the team a huge boost!

  17. chris l Says:

why would you give time of day to someone linked to killing millions of people in genocide with your look alike comparison? sickening.

  18. LakelandBuc Says:

    Rod Munch,

This is the same GREAT GM that traded up to the 2nd round to draft a Kicker. We have a great GM in Tampa.

    Who actually lasted the longest

Jake Camarda or the great Roberto Arguayo

  19. heyjude Says:

That was a shock! Jake will be picked up soon. I wish him luck.

Tampabaybucfan Says: “Just like Matt Gay……drafted, sucked…..cut…..Pro Bowl elsewhere.”

    So true ^^

  20. Tucker Says:

Why? Lol ok it’s not like this other guy is lighting it up isn’t Jake still on his rookie deal wild

  21. Cobraboy Says:

So weird. Gill is no better.

  22. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Has to be something else because the replacements’ best isn’t better than Cmardas worst and can’t get more than 2 kickoffs inside the end zone thus forcing one of the worst ST in the league coached by ArmstrongII to try and tackle someone

  23. adam from ny Says:

staggered in stoned off his azz monday with beet red eyes, and now that bowles is on the hot seat again, he told jakiepoo to GTFOH…

just my take…not exactly the facts

  24. Go team Says:

seems like he was not a suck up to Bowles

  25. adam from ny Says:

and i thought he was the next ray guy

  26. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Word is he’s playing guitar at a Vero Beach cigar lounge.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

I really don’t get the move, Jake literally is averaging 4 yards per punt more than Gill (45.3 vs 41.3), and in 5 additional punts has 3 more inside the 20 (5 vs 2). Gill has a higher net, but that is rarely on the punter, is normally poor coverage, in particular when the punter isn’t out kicking his coverage, which hasn’t been an issue.

It’s a terrible move if it’s about playing football – it has to be some sort of off the field issue.

In any case, Gill sucks, he should be gone as well – those numbers above make him literally, by far, the worst punter in the NFL.

  28. NJbucs23 Says:

He was the best athlete on the team and then it’s been a steep decline. There’s definitely something going on behind the scenes with Jake. Was he using peds? Does he have a substance abuse issue? Something is up with this kid.

  29. Mike Says:

It is sad to see what was once a rising star just fall apart and become a mere mortal.

  30. TomBucsFan Says:

    britt next

  31. Drunkinybor Says:

I’ll say it again… addiction problems

  32. adam from ny Says:

did jake marry a hippie or something…

dude went from one of the best players on the team to a donut right quick…!

he had a wicked punt game…!

placing the ball almost wherever he wanted, while punting as if he had a steel toe shoe…

remember a couple years back he had to run with the ball towards the sidelines on a play gone bad, and still punted it like 50+ yards…showing sick skill and athleticism…

he must have married a hippie who’s a grower or something, and with really good p

  33. adam from ny Says:

    we need a new punter…

jake cheech & chonged it, and the new guy is not really thee guy

  34. D-Rome Says:

That is surprising. In 2022 Jake Camarda was must see TV. Too bad he fell off. He’ll probably find great success like Matt Gay eventually did. Best of luck to him.

  35. unbelievable Says:

Gotta be something else going on behind the scenes… Gill sucks too.

  36. Tony Says:

We got Brady coming in & we’re signing him as the new punter.😁

  37. BallHawk75 Says:

We did him a huge favor. He’ll likely win a Superbowl somewhere else soon.

Meanwhile in Tampa we’ll be dealing with a Bowles movement that just doesn’t want to break loose.

It’s just stuck in there, deep and festering.

    It’s a Bucs life indeed.

  38. ElioT Says:

Can we please never draft another kicker/punter again?

    Please?

  39. Allbuccedup Says:

They are not paying him squat he could have stayed on the practice squad is he on drugs or something?

  40. ElioT Says:

    @Ballhawk

    LOL

It won’t be a clean break when it does happen. We’ll be wiping our a**es all day.

  41. Tony Says:

    @ElioT

Nope. I’m sure Licht & BOWELS have a punter & kicker already marked down as their first pick next year.

  42. Capt.Tim Says:

I would normally think he was partying, blowing all this millions he got.
But word I’d that he’s a devout Christian. So that idea is doubtful

People always say players make a big jump between years 1 and 2.
True. But sometimes they are jumping backwards.

    Good luck kid

  43. Bucfan1988 Says:

Without a shadow of a doubt, there is definitely something going on behind the scenes with Camarda….

They could have let him hang around and demote to practice squad or something if his skills were in a funk…

Joes, y’all need to do some snooping here on this…

Camarda was a stud when we drafted him and athletic as hell.
    Maybe marriage cooked him?
Maybe he became hooked on the wacky tobacky…
Maybe he lost his desire to wanna be an NFL punter.

    Somethings going on with him.

    We want the story 🙂

  44. adam from ny Says:

    yeah ^^^^^^^^^^ jake was a stud…

something happened when you go from stud to dud…

    or dude to dud…

    it happens……but yeah joeski……..get the story…

jake really was one wicked azz punter…it’s like we had a sniper back there…what happened ???

  45. ejm201 Says:

Check the podcast linked to my name, Jake is a Man of God and it seems like that is his primary focus as it should be, perhaps it affected him but I am certain he will go where he needs to be.

  46. CleanHouse Says:

    Yips

  47. Brandon Says:

Bucfan88… he has to clear waivers before he can be signed to the practice squad. If he is, then the move is definitely about performance, if he isn’t, it’s personal.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    He’s quiting football.

I have nothing to back that up lol.

  49. 1#bucsfan Says:

JOE can you get us the low down on what happened with camarda. Kinda strange to go from killing to being cut in just a couple seasons. Did he just lose leg power over night or what ?

  50. Darin Says:

    Get help Jake

  51. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

I agree jason.. call Martin for kickers or punters. And of course in pre season todd was trying to protect him so we should have known.. tood bowles will never take us much above 500.. conditioning, coaching choices and lack of media to get on him.. really both our press and coaching are terrible

  52. FrontFour Says:

    There’s more to this story……
