BSPN: Play-Action Will Doom Bucs

October 21st, 2024

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Though she didn’t provide specific numbers, Mina Kimes of BSPN isn’t overly fond of the Bucs defense in a specific area.

And that happens to be an area where the Crows thrive. That’s the Bucs’ opponent tonight.

Kimes noted the Bucs struggle on play-action passes. Again, Joe doesn’t have the BSPN data, so Joe will trust Kimes. After all, Joe doesn’t believe she would outright try to con people.

Kimes does see the Bucs doing well offensively against Baltimore, so long as they stick to the passing game. And why wouldn’t they?

If the Bucs were being truthful about wanting to devote a series a piece to start the game to three different running backs, to Joe that seems crazy. Stick with what works and what works is your best players.

And right now, the Bucs’ best players on offense are no-brainers: Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

    In Coen we trust!!!!

Let’s Tuck, Buck, White and Bake!!!!

  2. First Name Greatest Says:

Keep Todd Blows away from the offense, his ineptitude should be kept on one side of the ball. His soft mentality is not good against well coached teams.

Lamar having a career night tonight

Drink up Bucs fans, it’s gonna be a long night

  3. dbbuc711 Says:

I really hope they win, but don’t think they will

  4. Bucsfan81 Says:

Lamar is like 22-1 against NFC and let’s be honest Bucs don’t play well on prime time. I want to win also but I don’t expect them to win this game. I do think we should beat both Atlanta and the 49ers before the bye week though. This game and the Chiefs game will be the hardest games we have all season.

  5. gofortheface30 Says:

Not a good matchup for Tampa frankly if Vita doesn’t play especially. Lavonte will be used as a spy most likely against Lamar, but lets be real – Lavonte, while still very good – this isnt 27 yr old Lavonte, hes maybe 70% of his peak. Where does this leave Britt? Against Isiah Likley or Mark Andrews? Can see them boat racing right up the hash. So they will 100% bring Antoine Winfield down to help. As such, there will be a tone of zone to keep things in front of them, which flies in the face of a previous article of wanting the Bucs to get off the field. The Ravens are going to own time of possession, so Tampas offense needs to make their possessions count. Period. Although weirdly, people on this site seem to be in love with bend but dont break philosophy.I am staying so far FAR away from the +3.5.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

They will score on us…..we need a strong offense tonight…

  7. Steven #55 Says:

[Well, Vea has not been ruled out and to Joe’s knowledge, never had been ruled out. — Joe]

  8. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Use the same formula as last week but use White in the 4th quarter to wear the defense down with screen plays

  9. Matt_PcAfee Says:

    Podcast today?

  10. Bucsfan Says:

    Score 42 and you win

  11. Scott Says:

Kj Britt is the worst ranked LB now. Is that position a curse with us?

  12. David Kilmer Says:

Wow, when reading about the Ravens,it appears they are like a storm picking up steam in the Gulf. I am not sure the Bucs are at the same level and it apprars it will take a near perfect game to beat Balt. Great to hear Vea and Evans will play, they need both.
It is A bit scary to see an undrafted rookie playing cornerback. Yes ,you know they will test him early and often, not to mention the middle of the field with Britt. I doesn’t help matters when the Bucs have a por history of playing poorly on the national stage. Really that has to change at some point right?!
Yes the Bucs offense may need to be flat out playing at their best level for the Bucs to even have a chance.
Right now it appears no one but KC could handle Balt at this point. I guess we will see if this Bucs team is ready to play with elite teams.
Yes let’s keep our fingers crossed , their is a storm coming tonight, named Balt.

  13. Bucsfan Says:

The Bucs have done something no other team in the league has done-beat the Lions. Bucs are up to this challenge.

  14. PSL Bob Says:

Bucsfan, in all honesty, the Lions choked that game away the same way we did with the Falcons. Our record is reflective of our play. We should have lost to the Lions and beat the Falcons. But you’re right. On paper we are the only team to beat Detroit. Let’s just hope we continue playing the way we did in the 2nd half against the Saints. We play like that, and we can beat anybody!

  15. First Name Greatest Says:

Beating the Lions was dumb luck, Bucs were dominated in every stat but the scoreboard, if that game was played 10 times the Bucs lose 9 of 10.

  16. BuckyBuc Says:

Buck and Tuck, that’s all i gotta say

  17. A Bucs Fan Says:

@First Name Greatest – The Bucs won that game because Ben Johnson made Goff throw 55 times instead of running the ball with Gibbs and Montgomery in the second half without Vita on the field.

Speaking of…. are there any whispers on Vitas status tonight?

  18. Brandon Says:

Here’s what works…. alternating series with Bucky and Tucker until one gets hot… and using White as the 3rd down RB…. with Tucker being the short yardage guy.

  19. Cobraboy Says:

Better score another half a hunnert again to win…

  20. BillyBucco Says:

She is not wrong. Bucs have struggled against PA.
But the stats to date can almost be thrown out in the secondary because of 2 factors. One both Winfield and Kancey are back and the rush inside will be better and so will the coverage downfield. Two, I predict we will play some dime if the PA is working and that means Winfield, Whitehead, McCollum, Smith, Izien and Funderburk/Hayes will be on the field together.
Nobody has seen our Dime defense this year and it could be a Todd Bowles genius type of game.
Pittsburgh beats Baltimore like once every year so it’s not like this team can’t be beat. They have won 4 in a row and are due for a loss.

  21. Brandonbucc Says:

Mentally they already lost this game. They will lose because of that single factor.

  22. A Bucs Fan Says:

There’s a report that Vita WILL play tonight!!!! Even more exciting is that it was only a PRECAUTIONARY day off from tightness than a real hamstring pull!!! Hydrate up and crush the ravens big boy!!

  23. heyjude Says:

Well then, the Bucs need to prove Mimes and others wrong and win big!

The Bucs are playing at home, it’s Monday night prime time football, and the weather is perfect. Go Bucs!

  24. Boss Says:

I think if they stick to let the pass open the run game they will be ok.

    britt will get abused tonight.

  25. LakelandBuc Says:

Maybe, just maybe Yaya can 0.5 sack tonight. If that happens the Bucs stand a chance. Too bad Light pinned his sacks hope on a Stoner, 2nd round draft picks, 2nd year player……and a underachieving 4th year mediocre OLB..

  26. Baker’s bucker truckers Says:

Any given Sunday. Let’s prove that we are the real deal when we have our ish together. Go Bucs

  27. Baker’s bucker truckers Says:

In this case any given Monday. Go Bucs!

  28. Bobby Says:

Kimes is never fond of The Bucs!! Go back to 2020 videos of her commenting on the Bucs. She is a Bucs hater.

  29. D Cone Says:

Not only faking to Henry but giving it too him will also present issue.
Henry had 92 yards rushing until the last 2:45 when the Ravens played Turtle Ball, Henry rushed for 40 yards, 2 first downs, and Jackson took a knee and ended the game.

Final drive, the first drive where Jackson threw a Pick in the Red Zone and 1 punt were the only blemishes.

36.5 to 23.5 Time of Possession edge. 9 Rushing 1st downs to Commanders 1.
3 Passes over 20 yards two down field and one screen. Two were tight window and required touch but Mayfield certainly could have connected on the screen.

All but 1 first down for Commanders came through the air.

52 yards of Rushing allowed and Daniels had 22.

Lot of Folks will get a good look at Coen’s high powered passing attack under the bright lights this evening.

At least there is a second option should this game turn into a blowout before halftime. One way or the other.

  30. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

Baltimore is due to lose to the NFC. Tampa Bay is due to win in Prime Time. Go Bucs!!

  31. Pewter Power Says:

If you can run the ball on any team the run action will kill you. We’ll be fine

  32. BucU Says:

“””Kj Britt is the worst ranked LB now. Is that position a curse with us?”””

I’ve been harping on Britt for weeks now that we’ve seen just how much of a liability he is in coverage. He’s beaten time and time again for big plays. Apparently we have no one else that’s better so we’re stuck with the liability.
Sirvocea Dennis once again goes down with an injury just when he was going to overtake Britt for the lions share of reps. That one hurt. Britt is a hard working and good teammate but he’s too slow to cover anybody.

  33. Kenton Smith Says:

Barkley rushed for 180 yesterday for Philly. They are 4 – 2. They’ll win the NFC East. Goff looked like the MVP yesterday. Beating the previously undefeated Vikings. The Lions are 5 – 1. Let that sink in. Detroit lost their best pass rusher. Our guys are getting healthy. If we beat KC and Baltimore I think we’re the best team in football. Think our coaches are stupid? They are smart enough to know Henry can’t run loose. Our players and coaches are working hard and have been all week to prepare for these Ravens. And they aren’t one tiny bit afraid. I believe they are chomping at the bit. Throw them stats out the window boys and let’s take the AFC down a rung or two these next couple of weeks. And next week the Falcons feel paybacks a bi…. Two weeks from now the league is chasing us. That’s how close the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are.

  34. ocala Says:

    She is an idiot.

  35. Kenton Smith Says:

Oh yeah. Then the schedule is the easiest in the league for our Bucs. We will finish very strong. Looks like home field advantage to me. Some of you all can sell these guys short. I’ve seen too many championship teams in my lifetime.

  36. JBBUCS_06 Says:

would be a huge win. I see (hope) our offense goes off tonight as I believe Ravens pass D is vulnerable. Hoping Liam brings the creativity. With Palmer, Tucker, Shep and Culp – we’re adding speed that the Ravens may not be prepared for. USE IT! with misdirection and plays/personnel not yet on film.

Defense….just don’t have a Kirk Cousin performance repeated by Lamar. Limit to half and we have high prob of winning that. Falcons can be had, so can Chiefs – I see 7-2 possible.

  37. bradythebucsfan Says:

Vita vea is playing this game everybody, we had a nail biter in ATL and since Vea is playing I really do think we can pull this off, especially at home

  38. Dave Pear Says:

It’s true the Bucs are vulnerable to play action passing.

They’re also vulnerable to regular passing, bootleg passing, and running QBs, as well as statuesque QBs.

  39. HC Grover Says:

Let Coen outscore them. Open up the big O

  40. Woodenman Says:

How do you know their mentality Brandonbucc . What the hell are you talking about are you the team psychologist.

  41. Kenton Smith Says:

Mina Kimes set the table for Dave Pear didn’t she. I guess what makes it so funny is that there must be some truth to it. But Dave we will need to slow down the run game tonight more so than their passing game. So there’s that!

  42. heyjude Says:

Bucks ‘n’ Bucs Says: “Baltimore is due to lose to the NFC. Tampa Bay is due to win in Prime Time. Go Bucs!!”

    Yes!

  43. NJBucs Says:

This was checked as a loss for me at the beginning of the season, anyway. History against the Ravens just isn’t on our side. I hope the Bucs stay within 14 points of Baltimore tonight. I just see this as an ass kicking. The defense is going to get road graded. We won’t be able to run on offense, and we will get pass happy, and turnovers will start piling up. I hope I’m wrong, and I’ll be back to admit it, but I never had a good feeling against this team.

  44. orlbucfan Says:

Now, I know why I hate TV. Who in the h3ll is Mina Kimes?? Does she know anything about Tampa Bay besides teleprompter rap? Please Coen, open up the Offense. I have been begging for this since the Koetter days. Koetter never had Baker Mayfield. He would have had a field day. Go Bucs!!

  45. Dave Pear Says:

    Kenton, you have that right.

Hoping for a 40 burger from the offense, and then hoping that’s enough points. Very grim outlook on this game.

  46. GoneGator Says:

NFL live crew arent exactly famous for their predictions as far as I know. Predictable talking head picks that are often wildly off the mark.

Whatever Mia, we’ll see what you have to say Tuesday

I predict we’ll stuff the run on 1st down and get a pic and a fumble off Lamar.
No one is mentioning Vita is playing and Kancey is back.

  47. GoneGator Says:

Worried about our new corner…he’s untested under the lights and you know they will go after him when they get the chance. Fingers crossed that he’s capable and ready to show he belongs!

*I know a lot of people are down on Dean…I’m one of those that think he plays too soft in coverage BUT he doesn’t get beat over the top often and he CAN cover. We just don’t know about Funderburk yet.

  48. Kenton Smith Says:

As grim as your outlook is Dave ( we’ll say 0 on a scale) my outlook on this game is giddy (we’ll say 100 on a scale). That gives us a fifty fifty chance. Home field is worth 3 points. Oh well I still think we beat them by alot more than 3 points. We’ll know in about 6 hours!!

  49. Bucs4EverMore Says:

Embrace this challenge as One, and Kick Some Butt!

  50. Jorgito Brito Says:

Bowles will make Lamar throw with stopping the run. If we can shut down the run and win the line of scrimmage, we will win. We got ball hawks and turn overs are going to be huge in this game. This is a defining moment for Baker to ball out this game. I trust we will come out victorious and show the league that the Bucs are no fluke.

  51. RedzoneD Says:

We limit henry,Lamar gets few first downs with his legs, flowers gets few screens, likely and Andrew’s have a day but we win 38-30
Don’t sleep on this defense, we’re 100% and I expect to see it tonight
