Baker The Touchdown Maker (II)
October 7th, 2024So what NFL quarterback has had his hand — and legs — in the most touchdowns this season?
That’s an easy answer. It’s Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield has 11 passing touchdowns and 2 rushing. Take that, Lamar Jackson. The reigning MVP quarter sits two total touchdowns behind Mayfield.
While two more teams have Week 5 games tonight, the Chiefs and Saints, their quarterbacks are not withing striking distance of Mayfield. Derek Carr has been a part of 7 touchdowns and Patrick Mahomes has only 6 TD passes and no rushing scores.
So stop being so sad and blue about the Bucs’ prospects. Our beloved Bucs quarterback is playing very well and his game is diverse.
If Mayfield keeps cruising, the Bucs will continue to win more games than they lose, and it’s on to the postseason.

The only mistake Baker made vs Falcons was losing the overtime coin toss.

Baker seems to be a REAL Quarterback of the future, and Bowles needs to go if the Bucs don’t reach the NFC Championship. This team has too much talent to fall short of that expectation. Keeping Bowles around any longer without significant progress would be a mistake. Consider the wasted years under Dan Reeves with Elway or Foge Fazio with Marino. Even Manning, with Dungy (it pains me to say this), went on to Denver and set passing records.
Defensive-minded coaches hold back great offenses in the 21st century of football. This seems to be a recurring theme in the NFL: conservative, defense-focused coaches prioritize running the ball, controlling the clock, and winning with a smash-mouth style. Unfortunately, this isn’t 1960 anymore; the days of high-flying offensive performances are here to stay. The rules have changed, and while 30 points would win a game in 2002, last weekend saw seven teams score over 30 points. In 2020, the average touchdowns per game was over five, dropping to 4.5 last year, which is still an average of over 30 points.
Running the ball and controlling the clock is still a viable strategy in today’s NFL, if you’re up by two scores. Until then it makes no sense mathematically and we have witnessed it not work too many times to count. Atlanta in the super bowl anyone???
The Buccaneers have the potential to be a top-five offense for at least the next five years with Baker at the helm. Bowles needs to adapt to the modern game. Or It’s time for a change: shape up or ship out!

Answer me this,
Why is he on a short leash?

I hope the last game makes it sink into the powers that be, DONT EVER take your foot off the gas (your boot off their neck works too)

Nice stat – if we can get someone to turn the passing game loose in the 2nd half (and the defense healthy) – we’ll start another run!

I think we can rely on him a lot more. Especially near the end of a winnable game.

@LakelandBuc
You don’t understand what short leash is. A short leash is what Baker was on last year, not allowed to change up any of the play calls and is expected to hand the ball off to the RB’s 20 times a game whilst throwing nothing but short yardage passes. Bakers got a lot of freedom in the current offence and coaching trust him a lot, just in this one instance coaching decided to trust the numbers over their QB and it bit them in the ass.
Hopefully this stands as lesson served that they never doubt 6 again, especially not when the defence is without its stars. It’s a lesson i’d rather they learn in week 6 than in the playoffs.

Yeah. And his mantra is keep getting better every day. And he’s way more fun than Tom Brady. Scary how good this team can be, isn’t it. But this game Sunday don’t mean anything compared to you guys safety. I’m watching the weather channel and they said get preps done now! 175 winds – category 5 ! Everybody stay safe and good luck.

Baker statistically will have a better 2024 than Josh Allen. I hope that translates into a playoff trip. Not going anywhere without dramatic changes in the defense. Get the fact that there have been injuries; but saw much of the same last year when the defense couldn’t get off the field. Browns are taking gas. Licht should approach Cleveland and give 1st and 2nd round 2025 picks to Browns for Myles Garrett. Not going to find a comparable EDGE rusher in the next two drafts.

And to think , this time last year, the cries for trask shook the blog like a cat 4 hurricane. Some people have no vision😊

Baker has been playing like a franchise QB both in his performance as well as leadership. The stinker against Broncos was something even Brady had to endure during our best years, like the loss to the skins after a bye in 2011, the Saints losses etc. But outside of Brady, we have never had this type of consistent elite play from a QB in our franchise history. I have been a skeptic, but if this continues, how could I not have a tremendous amount of gratitude for Baker for playing his behind off and throwing his body on the line.

Ya, there’s a real disconnect with a coach who protects a mere 10 point lead…at halftime (!?) and shuts down a dynamic, points-getting quarterback like Baker. And, the horrible (Bowles’ zone-failure) defense should be legendary in the media, but it isn’t.
Dean told to “Pull-back.” Geeezsh! Is it more laughable, than more aggravating?

Yea Baker is Leading the Way. Sure Hope the Defense can Start Defending. STAY SAFE FLORIDA!

Bucs have lost every game that they have won the opening coin toss this year (a.k.a. started on defense).
