Baker Mayfield: I’m Not Lamar Jackson

October 18th, 2024

Good with feet, not great.

Is Baker Mayfield a mobile quarterback? Sure. He gets out of jams, moves in the pocket and when he sees an opportunity to run for a first down, he certainly will bolt.

However, Mayfield said don’t try to pigeonhole him with Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen or Jayden Daniels. Those guys, he said yesterday, are from another universe.

“I would not put myself in that category with those guys by any means,” Mayfield said, humbled that someone would even try. “It amazes me when you get to watch some of these guys on tape. Lamar [Jackson], Jayden [Daniels], Josh [Allen], the things they can do, extending plays, just the vision that they have, that’s a God-given gift that they have.

“I’ll do what I can but it’s not to that level.”

The Bucs now have three effective runners in the backfield: Bucky Irving, Sean Tucker and Mayfield. OK, four if someone gets the warm and fuzzies about Rachaad White.

While the Crows, who the Bucs play Monday night, may have an excellent one-two punch on the ground from Derrick Henry and Jackson, the Bucs have a one-two-three (-four?) punch.

The times that I have watch Jackson I came away thinking that he does not have a great touch on his passes. One day Jackson is going to be lit up and it will be season ending for him. He is a RB that has a pretty good arm. I am sure a lot of people will disagree with me.

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

Jackson has a propensity to fumble. That’s what I want to see. Caused fumbles by Tweeze, Tykee, David and Co.

  3. Beeej Says:

Jackson will be done by age 31/32, like most run around QB’s. I thought Russ would be the exception…nope

  4. bucnjim Says:

If the Bucs can completely stop the run and have success running the ball we match up very well with the Ravens.

The one talent I had overlooked in Baker was is brains! Dude gets it!!!

I’m not surprised by his play on the field, he’s been doing that from Oklahoma to Cleveland and now Tampa Bay. But I didn’t realize how smart he was.

Now you mix in maturity to go with those brains and his career in the NFL is finally blossoming.

After 76 years experience teaches you a few things IF you pay attention.

Here’s one nugget. The worst lies you can tell are the lies you tell yourself!
For Baker to be so HONEST even though his take is obvious, says a lot to me!

As I said, Dude gets it!!!

  6. LakelandBuc Says:

Running QB deserves much more money in salary than pocket passers. That was Lamar selling point during his contract negotiations. They are basically playing 2 important positions at the same time. And they have a much shorter career.

That’s why they argue for more guaranteed money
    And a higher salary

They know they will have a short career

  7. Baking with Coen Says:

Baker is becoming a better version of Brad Johnson? Possibly?

    Let’s Tuck, Buck and Bake!!!!

I had this take for a while but the past couple of seasons he’s shown the opposite. He can sling the rock at an elite level too. Lamar is the type of guy who can put up 300 in the air and 150 on the ground. He’s climbed up into the conversation with Josh Allen and Mahomes for me and I’m terrified for JTS and Yaya on Monday.

Lavonte has gotta bring the boom on #8

  9. heyjude Says:

Love Baker. He is always so humble about himself. He is doing a great job with the scramble and doesn’t need to be like Lamar and other running QBs.

  10. D Cone Says:

QB Rushing against the Ravens in 2024

    Daniels 22
    Allen 21
    Maholmes 3

Minshew, Burrow, and Prescott 7 yards combined.

Doubt Mayfield’s elusiveness will make a difference.

With Mayfield’s Passing games ranging from 163-347 and QBR of 13-83 you have to wonder if can will carry the team once they become one dimensional.

If he throws for his average/game of 245 that would be better than 1 of the QB’s the Ravens have faced, Josh Allen for 180 in a 35-10 drumming of the Bills.

  11. Matt_PcAfee Says:

What QB makes better down field blocks than Baker?

  12. Lt. Dan Says:

No one is getting the “warm and fuzzies” about White running the ball.

  13. heyjude Says:

Lt. Dan – I am still all in for Rachaad. Not the “warm and fuzzies” that Joe mentioned, but on the side of hoping.

  14. Leopold Stotch Says:

Lamar has definitely developed his passing skills, however, his bread and butter is definitely running. I think he still has a chance to develop more and transition to a passing qb as he gets older. I think he’s smarter than Cam Newton.

  15. BucU Says:

Man if Baker didn’t have those 2 fluke interceptions against the Saints his stats would be ridiculous.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

And Todd is no John Harbaugh.

  17. SlyPirate Says:

    Duh

Whoever said, “There’s no such thing as a stupid question,” never listened to an NFL media interview.

  18. GP Says:

    Leopold
    That’s not a big stretch

  19. Tiff, Okla,Bake, Bucs 4 life Says:

Gr7 comments n agree that jackson is more of a rb with a decent arm n glad Baker is Baker, a real all around qb1 with true grit n instincts n tale t n is a Team player, !

  20. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I love that Baker takes off and runs when he sees an opportunity. Just please for the love of God slide!!!

  21. orlbucfan Says:

Even I know Baker didn’t win that Heisman cos he was one of those type of QBs. Daniels is a gazelle disguised as a QB. Not surprised he’s part of a decent rebuilding DC team. BM is smart, feisty, and a total team player. That’s fine with me.

  22. Joseph C Simmons Says:

If the Bucs can completely stop the run and have success running the ball we match up very well with the Ravens.

Also, if the Bucs can completely stop the Ravens from scoring points and the Bucs have success scoring points we’ll probably win.

  23. Citrus County Says:

As Baker piles up wins and stats the detractors will begrudgingly come around. They will make all sorts of excuses as to why they gave up on him and ignored him initially.

Then as Baker gets more limelight and TV exposure his true nature and personality will begin to capture the the unaware.

At that point Baker will become a star.

Let’s just hope the Bucs pull it all together and don’t ruin it for him.

  24. Citrus County Says:

Drew Brees, you’ll likely get your bronze bust. I needed you to make a point but I’ll move on from you now. Baker can handle it from here on.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Baker & Lamar are alike in 1 respect: they both ‘fit’ their system. Or maybe it’s that the systems fits them. They’re both allowed to do what maximizes their talents. Very much different talents IO, but they can each keep their team competitive.

Coen ‘gets it’, and so does Monken. Both QBs are on-track towards having their best years, and that’s a tribute to their OCs & to the team around them.

  26. Citrus County Says:

For all the years that I followed many sports teams and athletes from afar by mostly honest and fair print media, I now have an understanding that many from younger generations don’t have. Technology and marketing tactics used for the sole benefit of political agendas and corporate profit have nearly completely ruined pro sports. The genie is out of the bottle and can’t be placed back.

I’m rooting for Baker Mayfield to defeat the odds against him and bring along a large following with him.

Seeing Roger Goodell sitting front row at the Al Smith dinner tells you all you need to know.

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Ravens have the #1 run defense; in 6 games they’ve only allowed 354 total rushing yards (59 YPG). They’re built to stop the run, and they sell out to stop the run. Chances are quite good that we won’t put up 277 yards rushing on them.

That said though, their defense is currently ranked #16 in Yards Allowed. Reason? They rank #31 in Passing Yardage Allowed. Doesn’t take a football genius to figure out how to compete with them. And the Bucs, with Baker throwing short passes to Godwin, McMillan, Shepard, Otton & White in particular, are well-armed to capitalize on the Ravens’ weakness. Run them ragged (via the short passing game) for 3 quarters, and they’ll be dragging come the 4th qtr.

Stopping them offensively is actually a bigger problem. They’ve averaged over 33 PPG in their 4 straight wins, hitting on 51.5% of their 3rd down conversions, 75% of their 4th down conversions, and scoring TDs on 75% of their trips into the Red Zone. That’s a scary good offense, and it’s healthy.

  28. Vinny from Vermont Says:

“The Bucs now have three effective runners in the backfield: Bucky Irving, Sean Tucker and Mayfield. OK, four if someone gets the warm and fuzzies about Rachaad White.”

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!

  29. Saskbucs Says:

I will be betting Henry under rushing yards. Anything over 80 vs the Bucs is an auto bet. Shut that run down boys! Henry needs a small runway to break one so hopefully he doesn’t get it.

  30. GoneGator Says:

I’ve always thought Lamar was over-rated. He has unreal athletic abilities but he’s not really a great, or even very good, pocket passer. In my opinion.

Baker is a MUCH better passer than Lamar ever will be.

  31. YallAre Sad Says:

All these racist comments about Lamar, ignorant.

  32. Marky Mark Says:

Brady played till 44 by NOT being a running QB. Eventually the speed goes away and you have to throw. Baker should run but slide or get out of bounce. Dont take doods on. Baker is a QB who can run and not like Lamar at all who is an RB that can throw.

  33. Kenton Smith Says:

Defense Rules. You’ve changed my mind. Leading up to this game I’ve felt a lower scoring grinding type game coming. Don’t know how my mind changed so fast but what I saw as 24 – 7 Bucs now I’m seeing as more 38- 27 Bucs. DR you have a more analytical approach whereas some of us rely more heavily on feelings. My feelings are a physical knockdown dragout low scoring affair but come on. Baker and Lamar came into this league together in 2018. They have played about the same number of games. Played each other plenty of times. The top of their prime. I don’t change my mind. Hardly ever. But I’m changing my mind. High scoring game Monday.
