Baker Mayfield > Patrick Mahomes?

October 24th, 2024

Surprising ranking.

Here is something Joe never would have dreamed he would read.

Joe doesn’t get into power rankings much. Those are Mock Draft Lite. They mean nothing but are designed as a cheap way to p!ss people off. Low-hanging fruit. Easy bait.

And when it came to power rankings or quarterback power rankings, it basically was a bat signal to readers if the guy ranking the teams/quarterbacks watched the Bucs or not. You could easily tell.

For example, weeks into the season, this Dan Pizzuta of The 33rd Team often had Mayfield ranked in the teens despite his numbers being among the league’s best.

Then came this morning. Joe has trained himself to just scroll past these power/quarterback rankings for the very reasons Joe spelled out earlier in this post. Somehow, Joe’s eyes quickly scanned this addition.

Then Joe had to rub his eyes to make sure he was seeing things right. Pizzuta has Mayfield ranked over Pat Mahomes? Seriously?

Joe never dreamed that anyone would think that Mayfield is better than Mahomes. Until this morning.

Does Joe think Mayfield is better than Mahomes? Hell no. And Joe would guess Mayfield wouldn’t think so either.

Is Mayfield having a better year than Mahomes? Joe would lean towards no. Statistically, yes. However, the Chiefs are undefeated. Scoreboard.

Will Mayfield still be better than Mahomes as the season progresses? We’ll find out soon. Mahomes has lost most of his top receivers to injury. Mayfield just did three days ago.

(Jameis Winston over Aaron Rodgers? How many shots has Pizzuta had before he published this? When is the last time Jameis started a game?)

Mayfield isn’t the reason we lose games…..our Defense is at best inconsistent at worst horrible.

  2. bucnjim Says:

The Chiefs defense wins most of their games. Is Mayfield better than Mahomes…NO! Are his stats better because we need to put up over 30 a game to compete….YES! I’m a huge Mayfield fan but the answer is still no.

  3. OrlandoBucFan Says:

Baker is having a good year, but he is not better than Mahomes. Stats do not tell the whole story.

  4. Baker Bowl Says:

I’m delusional for sure, but when you look at his production this year, other than the bad picks (which obviously you can’t do while evaluating performance) he has been very very efficient. Our offense has produced an abundance of points, he looks good getting out of the pocket, he takes his dump downs, he seemingly runs Coen’s offense at a high level. In ONLY THIS SEASON, Baker is not top 5, nor above Mahomes, but I do think he is top 10 and playing better than some other elite QBs.

That being said, Jameis should be #1, no question. The Browns just might never lose again.

  5. Dave Pear Says:

Perhaps we should consider trotting Trashk out for the second quarter only. Baker seems to turn into Ryan Fitzpatrick in the second quarter the last two weeks .

    S A R C A S M

We maintain, Baker knows he’s got to produce at least 5 touchdowns and hope for a FG or two. This is shameful pressure applied by the head coich who still fancies himself as a defensive genius even though no one else does, except his daughter who defends him rigorously on this website. Ya think knowing you need a 40 burger every week doesn’t inspire you to force a few throws?

    Jeenius Crimes.

  6. Tye Says:

If only the Bucs had a better DC and HC!

  7. zzbucs Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

With al due respect, it is not one or the other, sometimes is multi factors.

Mayfield and defense BOTH were the reason we lost ….and we played against one of the top 3 teams in the league against Lamar J who was brilliant, those were the reasons we lost

I am not a Mayfield hater, on the contrary, I love him, but his last game made several mistakes, and some of them on criticial moments….

And people who say Baker is better than mahomes should stop smoking weird stuff……..

  8. heyjude Says:

Wow, this is great! Very nice. Baker keeps moving up.

Jameis was a surprise. He has been good with the pep talks and may do well as the starting QB. I thought Cousins and Stafford would be lower than Stroud.

  9. Oscar Says:

If you watch other games and scrutinize quarterback play, you’ll see that all quarterbacks throw boneheaded picks occasionally including Patrick Mahomes. The difference is that the great KC defense bails him out and the Chiefs win the game and subsequently the boneheaded pick is forgotten. Same thing happened with Tom Brady with Bucs. Didn’t that great Buc defense bail him out occasionally? Unfortunately the Bucs don’t have that same great defense anymore. And unfortunately for Baker, the old narratives will continue to haunt him. So now Baker finds himself in a similar situation as Mahomes relative to the quality of his receivers so logically his numbers will begin to decline. The difference is that the Bucs don’t have the defense to compensate for diminished production in the passing game and it will not be easy for them to win games. I hope that I am wrong.

  10. JimBobBuc Says:

Joe: “Is Mayfield having a better year than Mahomes? Joe would lean towards no. Statistically, yes. However, the Chiefs are undefeated. Scoreboard.” It’s called complimentary football and defense is why the Chief’s have a better record.

Coen and Baker are creating points, which is the offense’s primary goal. The defense is sitting back thinking they don’t have to play their best because the offense will create 30+ points. A terrible lazy mentality that comes directly from Bowles’ players-first mentality, not holding anybody accountable. Have you ever seen Bowles pull a player out of the game after a bonehead play?

Looking at the defense, which players are playing up to expectations? I can only think of Hall, Zyon, and Tykee. I give Tykee lower expectations because he’s a rookie. Hall is playing better this year, but he’s not a difference maker. Zyon was a concern for me going into the season, but he’s better than I expected – but he still makes mistakes. Where are our ‘great’ safeties? Where is LVD? Has Yaya taken a step this year?

When the season started, I said we would be 5-5 at the bye and the Bucs could bounce back later in the season – IF they have RESILIANCE. Let’s see if Bowles can get this defense to bounce back so we can play complimentary football.

  11. First Name Greatest Says:

Stat wise, fantasy football wise Baker is awesome.

Real football Baker has trouble seeing the whole field and has lapses in decision making. he’s still a good QB but not a top 10 QB

  12. ElioT Says:

    Andy Reid >>>>>> Toad Bowels

    KC Defense >>>>> TB “Defense”

KC’s complimentary football = Emirates First Class

    TB’s complimentary football = Spirit

  13. Jerseybuc Says:

Mahomes has a a defense that knows how to play baker don’t

  14. BucVoyager Says:

If the defense was better we would be at worst a 1 loss team.

If you don’t have Baker as your QB1 on your fantasy team, you are missing out. Baker is not the reason this team is losing.

  15. jugheadfla Says:

Its hard to win consistently when your team gets out coached almost every game and said coach admits to being outcoached on a constant basis. I really don’t understand the logic as to why Bowels continues to be our HC. This team is able to win every so often despite getting outcoached

  16. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Defense is a problem now- injuries, inexperience, communication, lack of Edge Rush -so how do you compensate?
Control the ball on Offense – Bucs have the OLine to do it and the RB’s to do it, we’ ll see if backup Receivers can make plays
The key is Mayfield making good decisions – he made 2 very bad ones vs Ravens and they were a big factor in losing the game.
Mahomes is having an off year for him, but he has had an average Oline and injuries at receiver.
Mayfield playing smart is critical for Bucs to have success moving forward.

  17. BuckyBuc Says:

Defense and game management are the reasons why we lose games

  18. Bucswin! Says:

Yup. A good defence is a qb’s best friend. Mahomes has a great D.When you score 30 and still lose. That’s on the D, and the”defensive guru?” Head Coach. This atl game will show us a lot. Go BUCS!

  19. unbelievable Says:

I mean it’s pretty simple- mayfield is having a better season than Mahomes right now. Yet the Chiefs defense is so good they’re still undefeated. Meanwhile our defense gives up 400-500+ yards a game in recent weeks. Under a defensive head coach… and now the offense won’t be able to bail them out with the loss of Evans and Godwin.

    Cool. Cool cool cool.

  20. bucnjim Says:

AlanBucsfan, Great post! The only part I’m going to disagree with is the turnovers. Yes they were a factor in the game, but it’s a cause and effect thing. The QB was under pressure to score more than 40 so that’s where critical mistakes are being made. If the D were stopping anything then the game script would be slightly more conservative taking way less chances.

  21. TheMightyVH Says:

Patrick Mahomes has CLEARLY BEEN the best QB on the planet since he became the starter in KC. It’s all about winning and rings not about stats. Says as much about PM as it does about Andy Reid and what they have built in KC. Mad respect for that organization… they just have won in different ways.

  22. Scotty Mack Says:

Mahomes – 6 TDs and 8 INTs through 7 games this season. Hell yeah, it’s 100% about the defense in KC this year, even moreso than last year.

  23. Pewter Power Says:

If we gave up less than 300 yards per game we’d probably be undefeated right now Bowles. The scheme is why your defense Gets shredded not the players. After all these years Bowles is still claiming communication issues basically blaming everyone else but his scheme.

  24. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

    Interesting thought….in 2020 Mayfield’s WR1 was Odell Beckham Jr…WR2 was Jarvis Landry

OBJ was lost for the season in week 7…his receivers after week 7 were Jarvis Landry, Rashard Higgins, KhaDarel Hodge (Yes, THAT KhaDarel Hodge), Donovan Peoples-Jones and Austin Hooper.

Mayfield’s stats for that season thru week 7:

    Completions 125
    Attempts 198
    Percentage 63.1
    Yards 1392
    TD 15
    INT 5
    Y/A 7.03
    Y/C 11.14

Mayfield’s stats for that season after week 7:

    Completions 180
    Attempts 288
    Percentage 62.5
    Yards 2171
    TD 11
    INT 1
    Y/A 7.54
    Y/C 12.06

Once OBJ was lost for the season, the presumption was that his stats would fall off. In reality, his pass distribution broadened amongst his available receivers and he had no appreciable decline in his stats and, in some categories, actually improved.

I said all that to say this….it’s way too early to hit the panic button on the offense. I’d be more concerned with lowering the defensive points allowed than I would be the offensive points scored.

  31. Fred McNeil Says:

Ever heard of Schrodinger’s cat? It was a quantum mechanics parable about a cat in a box. It was both dead and alive at the same time till you opened the box. The BUCS are the same way. When each quarter starts they are both skunks and roses till the ball is snapped. Then suddenly they are one or the other for that entire quarter. Against the Saints they were a rose during the first quarter, a skunk during the second and a rose for quarters three and four. Monday night they were a rose for quarters one and a skunk for the other three. Not even Albert Einstein could figure out this enigma.

Mayfield has thrown 3 bad picks in the last couple weeks. That’s it. Otherwise he has been very good.

Slide Mayfield down to 10 and bump 6-9 up a slot. I think that’s about right.

  35. JustVisiting Says:

If someone can even make a coherent argument that you’re better than Mahomes, you’re playing some pretty good football.

  36. Gipper Says:

Same guy John Dorsey selected both Mahomes and Baker for their respective teams. Dorsey rated Baker as a better prospect. In head to head meeting in college, Baker at Oklahoma, outdueled Mahomes at Texas Tech by throwing 7TD’s in a single game shootout to win. By the way, all you “fans” who get exorcised by recent Baker interceptions, Mahomes has one more this year than Baker. Finally, Joe of all people should know it is about more than QB play. Let’s start with defense. Chiefs are much better defensively. As an exercise, tell us all how many Bucs defenders would start for the Chiefs. Finally, would we rather have Andy Reid or Todd Bowles as our head coach?

  37. ocala Says:

The only two QB’s I think you can for sure say are better than Baker is Josh Allen and Mahomes. Baker is without question a top 10 QB in the league.

Bowles is possibly the worst defensive coach in the league. His schemes and game plans are typically not effective. Bucs OC is great, but the Bucs defensive coaching is awful.

  41. orlbucfan Says:

I don’t know. Bucs sure made Mahomes and the almighty KC Chiefs look like a joke in the last SB they played. And no, it wasn’t all Methusaleh12 on Offense; it was the Bucs Defense and the entire team that won that Stupid Bowl.

Do you really know NFL football? Cos you sure don’t write like it.

  43. Ed McSherry Says:

There used to be a solution: “Don’t THROW that ball!”

How often do you see that “”these days?”

Baker’s only flaw is “pressing” too much. He wouldn’t have this problem with Parcels or Belichick. As far as “seeing the whole field,” there’s only one GOAT and he retired.

There are still plenty of weapons on offense to make this doable, especially with Mike back for the “easy” end of the schedule after the Bye Week.

It’s probably a matter of whether Coen, and Baker can make adjustments that work. Rachaad in the slot could make 1st down slant routes all day long, for. example; Bucky can catch, and Otton can get a lot more mid-route targets.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

What we’re observing in the behavior of Baker Mayfield’s most fervent supporters, or “Baker Boi(s),” is a classic case of delusional parasocial attachment, manifesting in a compensatory psychological mechanism. These individuals feel compelled to inflate Mayfield’s abilities to an absurd degree, often claiming that he is the best quarterback in the league—a statement that is objectively untrue by any rational standard. However, this exaggeration is not a result of mere fan enthusiasm, but a deliberate defensive strategy.

The purpose of this hyperbolic adulation is twofold: first, it serves to solidify their own status as “true” Baker devotees, marking them as the ultimate gatekeepers of his fandom. Second, and perhaps more importantly, it acts as a social deterrent. By elevating Mayfield’s play to such an extreme, they aim to dissuade others from joining the fanbase, as the absurdity of the claim alienates more reasonable observers. This exaggerated stance is, at its core, a defensive measure, protecting the perceived sanctity of their exclusive, albeit entirely one-sided, relationship with Mayfield.

In doing so, these individuals inadvertently isolate themselves in a bubble of delusion, unable to reconcile reality with the constructed narrative they use to shield their egos from the idea that Baker’s attention is, and always has been, distant and impersonal. The inflated claims serve as a protective wall, keeping “outsiders” at bay while reinforcing their own distorted sense of connection.

  45. orlbucfan Says:

Rod Munch, seriously, give it a rest. The Bucs blew it in the first quarter when BM or whoever did not call a QB bootleg option. If that had been called, BM would have walked into the end zone. 14-0 Bucs. The whole team wilted after that dumbazzed call. I listened on Radio and I knew.

  46. orlbucfan Says:

Lamar Jackson is so great? How come the Bucs Defense sacked his azz twice in a row in the beginning of the game? Who was Henry? I Listen on RADIO and they were as astounded as I was. Bucs would have won that game.

  49. Bucsfan Says:

I enjoy watching Peyton and Eli with coach Bellichick offer their insight of the MNF games. It was 2nd and goal from the 3 after Irving had just gained 6 and right after the snap when baker dropped back Coach Bill immediately said “Why are they throwing?”, and after about 3 seconds Peyton yells “Throw it away” and again he yells “Throw it away”. The moral of this anecdote is WTF are you passing for when it is 2nd and goal from the 3……………………………

  50. orlbucfan Says:

I’m an old Bucs fan. I’m feeling it, too. This game floored me cos of, I don’t know, stupidity/corruption? Ravens had the game in the bag, and they get the orders to go after CG14 with a blatantly illegal hit? It’s not the first time that’s gone down against Tampa Bay. Michael Clayton’s career came to a halt in his second year. He was gifted, and Bucs were playing in Detroit under Chucky. Bucs were losing but Detroit went after Clayton. They hit his knees right on the sidelines, and the DB made sure the job was done. Only call was Defensive hit. The Detroit Player was not ejected. Chucky never challenged it cos he was an ahole. I saw and heard it on two different media live. I have a thick skin about corruption.

  51. Irish Laughter Says:

Baker is a beast. After 5-6 years of irrelevance, he now is playing with a team that has been taught what it takes to win a championship (Brady). Come on Joe, you have to give TB12 some credit for the leadership that rubbed off on the Mike Evens and Chris Godwin’s . They are now showing the way. The pressure if off Baker (I just want the guys to have fun) and he can go out there and be himself. Keeping it real in Ireland.

Give Mayfield a couple years with the same Offensive Coordinator, same team.

    Rod Munch:
I know you have issues with Baker. But you overlooked the fact that he was playing on one of the worst teams when he started his career in the pros. He had no offensive line that would block for him and still he threw after missing how many games was it and broke the all-time record with 27 TDS in a single season for a rookie quarterback on one of the worst teams ever. If you just give him a chance you’ll see he’s still learning and improving. And yeah he made some darn bad decisions with the two interceptions. It makes me ill myself, and do a little research if you look at the multitude of 55 and 60 yard passes completions that he’s made throughout his career college and pro you should give him a chance because there’s never been anybody that wants it as bad as him and who has trained and honed his skills and always is training and honing hide and watch he’s number five in qbr 107.1 I do believe is what it says on the internet that can’t be all that bad can it? Kept the guy some slack.

  64. Gilly Says:

Cut (kept) the guy some slack… He’s not even well seasoned yet. Nobody wants it more than him I can guarantee you that and he will win a super bowl or die trying. I believe that’s just the mindset he has. Everybody is always told him he’s too short not fast enough has no arm he’s hurt all these things all his life that’s what drove him to win the Heisman what drove him to break so many records throughout his career especially in college. You should go back and watch some of the 2017-2016-2015 games and watching mature I’m telling you he can throw the ball deep in stride at 55 yards all day long it takes a lot of moxie to stand in the pocket and see everything perfectly every time I imagine even the greatest football players quarterbacks have thrown bad passes crazy passes nobody’s perfect he’s going to do all right just give him more time he should have done better against Baltimore but Baltimore is probably the best team in the league and I think maybe he just got a little too excited tried too hard I don’t know how he didn’t see that guy the open guy in I don’t know how that happened but I can guarantee you he’s kicking himself for it he’s not arrogant in that way if you listen to him talk he’s not an arrogant person. I don’t understand why you hate it so much?

  65. Gilly Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai:
I believe that’s what Texas tech said the two years he beat Patrick Mahomes. And I didn’t see Mahomes win anything about the best quarterback in the 21st century ? And they would have beat Kansas City when he was playing with the browns if it wasn’t for the ref making a bad call I don’t know if you recall that or not ? In the playoffs remember the call they almost beat Kansas City. It’s like you guys don’t think that having an offensive line and an OC of quality even comes into play. It just seems like well he’s not getting it done there’s a lot more goes into the game than you guys seem to understand. I didn’t see my homes at Kansas City break a record for 27 TD passes when he was a rookie and he had the Kansas City Chiefs 0-line and receivers. They were best in the league and the browns were at the bottom of the league and he missed what two or three games and still threw 27 TD’S THAT RECORD. And that many and you say that Mahome is better than him wow drink the Kool-Aid brother drink that Kool-Aid. Mahomes is a great quarterback. And Mayfield may not be as good as him.? But they keep the same company. Just keep watching hopefully he will live up to what I’ve seen watching his college career and pro career. It’s a team sport it takes the whole team and a good coaching staff which Kansas City has all of that. The Bucs are putting it together though. Let’s hope that the team gets better and let’s hope Baker improves where he needs it. That’s what we all want anyway is for the team to be successful so I guess we should trust in the coaches and trust in the team players.
