“Worst Game” For Jamel Dean

September 25th, 2024

“I’ll do better, Coach.”

So Todd Bowles was asked to detail the play of his defensive backs and one guy got a public finger-wagging.

In the wake of the embararassing loss to the Broncos, the Bucs’ head coach spoke well of safeties Jordan Whitehead and Christian Izien, and he glowed about cornerback Zyon McCollum and rookie Tykee Smith.

And then came a performance assessment of sixth-year veteran cornerback Jamel Dean. He has started 60-plus games under Bowles, who wants him more dialed in to reading offenses.

“I thought the first two games he played well, probably [Sunday] not so much,” Bowles said of Dean. “Probably one of his worst games and he’ll bounce back from that. He’s got to press-bail a little bit more. He’s gotta be more in tune with the formations he’s seeing.”

Bowles’ comments came on the Buccaneers Radio Network. And while Joe can’t be sure, Joe thinks/hopes Bowles was referring to Dean needing to give less cushion to wide receivers. Yes, cornerbacks have some discretion within Bowles’ defense and Coach’s quote above reinforces that.

Watching Dean at times, Joe gets unsettling flashbacks to the soft coverage of the Mike Smith defenses of 2017 and 2018.

One of Dean’s strength is “press-bail,” as Bowles referred to it. By all accounts, Dean is healthy and in his prime, so he shouldn’t be playing tentatively.

Aside from making life too easy for a rookie quarterback on Sunday, Dean knows it’s easier to make a play when operating more aggressively.

Dean’s interception-free streak stands at 32 games.

When we got Dean and I saw what he could do. I thought wow this dude could be special! Not so much anymore I just don’t see the fire. Add to that that Todd insists on playing prevent defense with him. I would love to see him in man all game long. Just saying… But then again I know nothing about playing DB.

They were apparently picking on dean Sunday. It would help our entire secondary if we could get a pass rusher or two though. Can Shaq come back please?

    Go Bucs!

    Go Bucs!

coach needs to light a fire under his azz…

the other guys back there play like there’s heat in the kitchen…

jamel tryin’ to be a cool cucumber…time to get all frothy & twitchy

  3. Lakeland Says:

The Bucs secondary only gave up 216 yards passing. And they haven’t gave up a passing TD this season.

That’s not bad considering you have a offense that can’t sustain an meaningful drive, can’t control the ball. It get very hot on the field in Tampa, the defense can’t afford to be on the field a lot. They need better results from the offense.

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

His worse game was his first game with those red sleeves at Seattle. He is getting picked on because teams are figuring out Zyon is the better corner.

  5. PowerOfPewter Says:

A rookie QB was picking on Dean all afternoon. And Buc’s ‘pass rush’ never laid a finger on Nix.

    @Lakeland:

yeah i was thinking that last sunday…the d is on the field too damn much…in the heat…yes…

how can they get a spell and some sideline rest…?

simple…time to get the running game in order…the time is now with philly coming in…time to control the clock more and pound the rock…

it’s week 4 of the season…we are now entering the real portion of the season – let’s get this running game established…

can’t we get 60 on the ground from bucky and 30 receiving from bucky…

and 60 in screens with rachaad and 30 on the ground from him…

    i think we can

  7. Defense Rules Says:

I think the Washington game was a pretty good example of what Bowles & Coen would like to see out of our offense. Bucs ran 61 offensive plays total … 30 runs, 30 passes, 1 sack. We had 0 giveaways. We kept our drives going (9-for-13 on 3rd down conversions) and thus controlled the TOP (33:41 to 26:19). Oh and in the process we scored 37 points … 4 TDs & 3 FGs.

Compare that though to the Detroit game. Bucs only ran 47 offensive plays … 23 runs, 19 passes, 5 sacks. We had 1 giveaway (an INT). Our drives constantly stagnated (2-for-10 on 3rd down conversions) and thus we lost the TOP (26:07 to 33:53). Despite the lopsided stats, we still managed to score 20 points … 2 TDs & 2 FGs … and win the game 20-16 thanks to an awesome defensive effort.

But now compare those 2 games (relatively consistent game plans) to the Denver game. Bucs ran 57 offensive plays … 16 runs, 33 passes, 7 sacks. We had 2 giveaways (1 INT, 1 fumble). Our drives once again stagnated (3-for-11 on 3rd down conversions and 0-for-2 on 4th down conversions) and thus we lost the TOP once again (28:52 to 32:08). Our offense scored a grand total of 1 TD and we got blown out 26-7.

We’re 2-1 (the good news) but we’ve entered a downward spiral in these last 2 games and best put on the brakes FAST or it’ll get out of control. Philly has injuries just like we do and we NEED this game badly to level the wings and get some altitude underneath us. And in this coming game our offense … and especially our OLine … needs desperately to get back on-track. No excuses.

That game got out of control quick. Dean gave up two big plays right away to set the Broncos up to make it 7-0. Then while still in the first quarter 14-0. Needed to pass right away just to catch up which gave them an easy path to rushing Mayfield. Unfortunately it seemed like Dean looked like he didn’t even want to be here last two Sundays.

  9. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

History with Dean: plays way off the receiver, gets burned a few times then comes up lame and is out a few games. Comes back playing tighter coverage and has a good game – then rinse and repeat.

  10. Hodad Says:

Good thing we got Washington early, their rookie QB is the real deal. Don’t think we’d beat him again. We should’ve lost to the Lions let’s be real, and we got exposed against a bad Bronco team. Be happy we’re 2-1, we could easily be 0-3. This week against Philly we’ll get a better handle on what we are this season. If we get owned again, Atlanta will probably put the nail in Thursday night.

  11. Henry Says:

He got paid!!! The youngins are chasing the bucs. Dean is as soft as a fat chick rolled in flour.

  12. Bobby Says:

Bucs ownership is paying 20 mil to Dean who can’t catch an interception!!! What is up with that??

  13. richbucsfan Says:

It would be nice if some of the Bucs realized they are tasked to tackle/fall in the opponent rather than one another: cases in point: Hall destroying Big Red’s knee and now #50 is the victim of “friendly” fire. Haven’t heard of any opponent getting injured by a Buc. Dang, what gives….

  14. 813BUCBOI Says:

he doesnt consistently play to his 4.3 speed and loses focus too often….his eyes are always in the wrong spot…

    @adam i agree….bowles needs to light a fire under him….

i say put izzy at CB when winfield returns and let t.smith play nickle…zyon is our #1CB…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Dean led the team with 13 tackles…that speaks volumes….his WR caught those balls

  16. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

Are we really surprised every year it’s something with him injuries soft coverage giving up the big plays he’s been really a bust for us. He’s all talk no action. He is all talk he makes one play and then gives up five big plays

  17. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Hopefully, he’ll get traded like CD. Dean doesn’t play with any intensity or passion. Get burned at least once a game then gets injured.

  18. Bucfan1988 Says:

I re-watched the game last night.

Dean was giving 10-yard cushions PRE-SNAP like every other play.
    Ridiculous & bone-headed…

The secondary coach needs to be scolded for not saying something to him.

He plays weak & timid 🤷🏻‍♂️

  19. Badbucs Says:

Another of the weak sisters. Bowles needs to put him on the bench as an example. At least the O line guys have the excuse that they have no talent. It’s just lack of effort from Dean. Ride the pine and get shipped out like your buddy CD3.

  20. 1#bucsfan Says:

For real JOE PTSD from the Nike smith era hahaha

  21. LongTimeBucaneer Says:

All I can say good about Dean is in most cases he kept the ball in front of him. However they dinked him to death. It was like the early long ball scared him to death. He’s just not good unless he has help over top. He’s not that guy. Confidence seems to be his issue. If he gets nicked up a little he goes into survival mode pretty quick. His lack of true athleticism is the issue. Great straight away speed. Recovery is poor.

  22. Kgh4life Says:

Dean doesn’t have the ” dog” mentality, he’s soft.

  23. Lakeland Says:

I don’t blame Jamel Dean for playing 10 yards off the WR. As much time this Defensive front 7 is giving the QB to sit in the pocket. If I’m a CB in man coverage without help behind me, l would be playing 20 yards off him. Just to keep the ball in front of me, and not giving up the TD. If you want tight man coverage from your CBs, then you will have to constantly get pressure on the QB.

Don’t put me on an island without a life jacket

  25. Badbucs Says:

You can’t make up for playing ten yards off by missing the tackle.

  26. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Trade him to the jets straight up for Reddick!!!! Please

  27. Dave Pear Says:

A competent coach would have already impressed that upon Dean years ago, or at least before you play against the worst QB in the league who is a rookie and cant read the field when coverage is tight.

    It’s gonna be ugly early.

  28. 76Buccaroo Says:

Replace him now!! He has been a thorn in our side since the beginning! Very disappointing.

  29. Rob H Says:

Nix’s first pass was a strike into Dean’s “coverage”, and set the tone for the rest of the day. He plays waaaay too soft. Lining up 10+ yards off the receiver every play just makes it too easy to pick up yards with the quick pass. Is he so afraid of getting burned deep that that’s the only way he figures he can prevent it? I mean, it it worked I might give him credit. Too bad he gets burned deep constantly.
He plays timid, doesn’t hit, and gets hurt every time he tries to make a tackle. Now that we got rid of CD3, he’s clearly the weakest link in the DB room.

  30. Dave Pear Says:

Todd is great, he has a plan.

  31. Buc2Blame Says:

Another reason Jason Licht time is up . To pay this lump of trash what he payed him shows as a general manager you don’t know what you’re doing. This man Jamel Dean should’ve never been paid a single dime not 1 centHES TRASH ALWAYS HAS BEEN. double move gets him every time he can’t cover slants says he’s fast but gets blown by constantly and fakes injuries when he’s embarrassed like his old counterpart Carlton Davis who’s considered as the worst corner in the league
