What Did Sean Payton See In Bucs Secondary?

September 23rd, 2024

Broncos coach Sean Payton.

Very interesting angle Joe read about how the Broncos attacked the Bucs.

Of course, the Broncos are coached by Sean Payton, who had been a thorn in the Bucs’ side for years when he coached the slimy Saints.

If there is any man alive who makes a Todd Bowles defense regularly look like a bad college defense, it’s Payton. Some of the absolute worst beatdowns the Bucs have suffered in the 21st Century have come when facing Payton teams.

Yesterday was the latest.

It seems Payton must have seen something on video to think he could attack the Bucs as if he had a veteran quarterback. That’s the way long-time former Giants and Eagles beat writer Matt Lombardo saw it as he documented in his “Between the Hashmarks” site.

Payton, Lombardo notes, took the leash off his rookie quarterback and for the first time this season, the Broncos had a vertical offense instead of a timid “horizontal” offense.

So what did Payton see in the Bucs secondary that he thought his rookie quarterback could expose? Was it the absence of All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield, Jr.? Does Payton not respect Jamel Dean? The very first play from scrimmage targeted Dean 20 yards downfield and Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton shoved Dean around like he was a grade school kid selling candy bars to bankroll his football team.

Or, could it have been that Payton, seeing the Bucs have no pass rush without Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey, thought Nix could pilot an aggressive offense if he had time to throw?

What really frustrated Joe was that the Broncos had Alex Palczewski, a second-year player from Illinois — Illinois! — making his first NFL start at right tackle and the Bucs could not take advantage of that.

Talk about a facepalm of a pass rush.

Bowles has always gotten destroyed by Sean Payton. His top down defense plays way too far off coverage to be effective versus schemed intermediate routes and Payton knew this. It was perfect for his rookie QB. McCollum shut down his side of the field except for the first drive and Bowles pet project Dean played zone with help and they couldn’t get it done. On top of this Bo Nic had no pressure and delivered accurate balls. The defense looked tired and the offense tried to do too much downfield stuff early. It was a perfect mismatch of play calling that led to disaster. I seriously don’t think it was a trap game for the players, but for the coaches it absolutely was. Had we lost 26-23 this wouldn’t be that bad, but both sides sucked coaching in this one.
Please let’s not lose 5 of the next 6 now.

  2. Lord Cornelius Says:

Of course he’d wait till week 3 to run something effective.

As great as he looks this week wtf was he doing with their offense in weeks 1 and 2 lol.

The rollercoaster of the NFL. The last few years there’s been very little consistently good teams

  3. Baker Bowl Says:

Unfortunately I think Jamel Dean has proven so many times he’s subpar, I thought him and CDIII were 2 of the most overrated corners in the league when together. The jury is still out on Izien and McCollum for me but Bo just ripped us apart constantly with short passes and Dean got exposed all over the field. As TB said we got outplayed, outcoached, out play-called, out attituded and just out footballed. I’m not gonna say a single nice word about the scumbag broncos HC so I give all the credit to Bo Nix stepping up to the NFL level and our corners being young without a true #1 guy

  4. Bucamania Says:

I’m over Dean with his 10 yard cushion and lazy tackling.

  5. Kgh4life Says:

It just goes to show you that Dean, doesn’t have the killer instinct needed to be an consistent DB.

  6. Bucsalltheway Says:

When you blitz as much as Todd did yesterday you will get burned especially if a play is designed for knowing it is coming I think we was very sloppy yesterday blitzing it cost us the game and mayfield sporadic throws leading to ints didn’t help. Yaya, whitehead and many others telegraph the blitz by trying to get early jumps Denver was smarter and baited mayfield into believing they playing drop coverage but turned to aggressors once the ball got into godwins and evans radius denvers corner backs are very talented but the bright side is not every team has those it is one game on the dark side no need to panic yet.

  7. Casual Observer Says:

Agree about Dean. Needs a hard look by the coaches.

  8. Bobby Says:

Pass rush in need, hey JPP is still available, just saying

  9. Dave Pear Says:

Todd plays passive soft zone, and hopes to force the opponent to settle for field goals. I mean, the Donkeys settled for 4 field goals. Mission accomplished! You know, yards given up doesn’t matter.

  10. Bama Rich Says:

Time to swap Dean for Izien when Winfield returns. Then through in Bucky for good measures.

  11. Bama Rich Says:

    ^Throw^

  12. Geno711 Says:

We started the 1st series in man coverage. It will be curious to see if we played more man coverage than typical when the stats come out.

  13. H-Town Darryl Says:

He saw Dean lining up 15 yds off

  14. Ed Says:

It really does show the difference in a coach like Peyton that attacks the weakness of the Bucs on short routes, already knowing that they are also a bad tackling team as witnessed by multiple missed tackles and the obvious touchdown that Britt should have stopped or Nelson should have contained.

The Bucs were playing a rookie quarterback but didn’t do anything to confuse him. On the other side Mayfield was confused and running for his life.

The Bucs are not very smart not to take advantage of a rookie tackle and bring something to free up some pass rushing from that side.

Moving to Eagles, both Lane Johnson and Devonta Smith suffered concussions so I would think that it would be very doubtful they play next week. Not sure about AJ Brown but if all of these players are not on the field it will be Hurts and Barkley running the ball and short stuff to tight ends. I know it and you know it so lets see the defensive head coach come up with players that will stop it. Next week’s game is set up for the Bucs defense to have a one dimensional offense to face so we’ll all see if the Bucs are up for the challenge.

  15. GP Says:

There’s a reason why Nix had so much time to throw
As poorly as we played, the refs made a major impact as well. It’s extremely rare, even as a Bucs fan (refs seem to hate us) to see so many un-called offensive holding penalties. Our pass rush should have had at least half a dozen sacks. Kinda hard to get a sack when one arm is dragging an offensive lineman, or you’re being hooked over the shoulder and around the neck. Losing 10 yards as opposed to gaining 27 might have killed a few of Denver’s drives and resulted in a much closer game.

  16. Lakeland Says:

The Broncos had 214 yards passing

    The secondary did it job

  17. Lakeland Says:

    216 yards

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

Our Bucs got caught with their pants down and got.,,, Rotor Rooted.
Perhaps this is the best thing could have happened to us believing all the hype. Now we can come ready to dogfight the Eagles.

  19. A Bucs Fan Says:

@GP you are not wrong. Bucs were on the wrong side of the money yesterday and the refs swallowed their whistles. It was obvious.

  20. geno711 Says:

The Bucs blitzed two of the first three plays and played man coverage and got burned by Bo Nix for gains of 22 yards and 31 yards. 53 yards on those two plays. Pretty sure that is why the Bucs played their typical zone after that.

Not sure that Dean did as poorly as the fans above state.

Yes, Sutton got a slight shove on that 1st play that led to the 22 yards.

If Dean was primarily responsible for Sutton the rest of the way, then maybe it was not that horrible as fans are stating. The rest of the game, Sutton caught 6 more passes out of 10 more targets for 46 yards. An allowance of 4.6 yards per target the rest of the game. Is that horrible?

Of course, if he was not on Sutton than that means nothing.

  21. bucsfan951 Says:

pretty simple, really. Come out, punch the Bucs defense in the mouth, and the corners will play 10-12 yards off of the receiver. From there, with zero pass rush, the qb can sit back and pick apart the defense.

I like Todd as a defensive coordinator, not as a head coach. This is why I will always vote “little confidence” in the weekly polls.

  22. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Two things really consistent about dean, he never saw a coverage that couldn’t be blown, and he will leave no ball thrown his way caught by him.
Besides that, if playing 15 yards off in that now infamous Tampa 1 soft lawn chair zone of theirs, he excels.

  23. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

What’s wrong with an Illinois player? Maybe the Bucs front office needs to pay attention to the Big10 instead of only seeing the SEC through rose-colored glasses.
