New Bucs QB Michael Pratt
Todd Bowles was firm today at One Buc Palace after practice.
The Bucs got themselves a new quarterback.
If you missed it last week, that rookie QB is Michael Pratt, a seventh-round pick of the Packers in April. Pratt was cut last week and was signed to the Bucs’ practice squad.
Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht told The Sick Podcast he planned to draft Pratt in Round 7 but Green Bay took him one pick prior to Tampa Bay pulling the trigger. Licht explained that he’s had his eye on Pratt for years, in part because Licht’s former college coach was his position coach at Tulane Universtiy.
Instead, the Bucs drafted tight end Devin Culp out of the University of Washington, who made the roster and likely is Tampa Bay’s N0. 3 tight end ahead of Ko Kieft.
Today, Bowles was clear that Pratt isn’t just a warm body.
“We think we got a guy we can develop,” Bowles said after emphasizing Pratt’s talent and traits, and him not being just practice squad filler.
Pratt, effectively, is the Bucs’ No. 3 quarterback. John Wolford signed with the Panthers after the Bucs cut him last week.
No, Joe doesn’t expect Pratt to be a factor this year, or in the future. But every year a few teams are forced to dig deep into their QB depth chart, so who knows?

That’s not meant as a slight against Trask btw. Just a reality. Pratt will be cheaper and Trask may even want to move on for another QB competition.

Trask will be gone next year. I don’t think there is any chance the Bucs resign him even if he were to start and be successful. He was dealt a bad hand behind Brady and do nothing Clyde as his coach the first couple years he was in tampa.

There is zero chance Kyle Trask will sign – or wants to sign – with the Bucs again. I mean, in all honesty, would you? The Bucs know this and so they are beginning to restock the quarterback room for 2025. That’s what all this is about.

Trask got dealt a REALLY bad hand. But that’s life. I think there is fair chance he ends up somewhere he has a shot. It’s up to him what he does with it. I wouldn’t be even mildly surprised if he balls out.

My guess is they resign Trask with no guarantees, and let the 2 compete. If they don’t do that, they’ll either have to draft one, or sign a FA to compete. Can’t just hand the back up job to Pratt next year.

Pratt’s tape is interesting. He shows on a number of throws that he does have an NFL arm and throws with NFL velocity, which is a must for any project QB.
The NFL site had him as a possible 4th round pick, and obviously he was in fact drafted.
The only redflag, really, is why the Packers gave up on him and traded for another QB to replace him. It could just be that they assumed he’d resign with them – but he choose instead to sign with the Bucs.
Also worth keeping in mind he’s only a PS signing, it’s not like they put him on the active roster. So while they like him, he’s still just a PS guy, at this point.

The Bucs have not developed one QB in 48 YEARS. The best move is to sign another vet after Baker. It’s a great strategy. 50% of all Super Bowl winning QBs in the last 20 years are FAs.

No way Trask re-signs to compete for a #2 spot behind Baker. Only way he re-signs is if Baker is gone and he can compete for the #1 spot. He’s seen enough of the Bucs’ “How to Develop Quarterbacks Without Playing Them” program.

This idea that Trask is going to go somewhere else is laughable. Who wants a 2nd round pick in the league for 4 years with no experience? Which team?
Trask will take a backup contract here.
Why? That’s who he is. He did not leave high school, when he was a backup. He did not leave UF, when he was a backup. He was loyal and waited. He didn’t suddenly change his core beliefs when he arrived in Tampa.
Someday, he will get his shot. And he will do well.

Pratt had 4 Offensive Coordinators in 4 years. This guy might be a steal. Trask may still be on the team gor years, I feel that he’s way better than last year. There’s never too much QB depth. Go BUCS!!

trask got log jammed behind brady and it just continued with baker…
i’m pretty sure if things stay status quo, he’ll want out after this year…
now he’s jammed up again…baker in front and pratt behind him…with coach saying “we’ve got a qb we can develop”…
trask is prolly getting pissed by now…thinking “wait, i thought they were developing me?”

Getting real the Bucs got low hanging fruit at low cost. Will he become an NFL star? The odds are very very low. The price was also very low. So for small money the Bucs get to see what they got. More likely a decent Ford rather than a Ferrari. But what the hell, no risk it no biscuit. That was throw away money well spent.

I don’t disagree with that at all. Dump your resources into build a team and then hand the keys over to a vet that ready to go. It’s why I always thought they should have gone all in on Rodgers once Brady hung it up, that would have kept the Bucs as a legit SB contender for a few more years.

Well the price is free, just a spot on the practice squad, so there’s literally no risk here at all.
I’m just happy they’re spending the spot on a guy with a legit NFL arm – and while still a lottery ticket, that at least gives him a chance. I never get spending resources on guys that you know can not play on Sunday’s because they don’t have the arm. That should be the very very top priority and if someone can’t clear that bar, they should be disqualified. While I think Licht has done a great job, I don’t get why in most years he brings in some noodle armed QBs that have no chance to ever play and have them waste a spot all through camp when everyone knows they won’t even get a PS invite.

Rod I’m sure glad our Bucs didn’t go with Rodgers. Then I’d have never found this wonderful joebucsfan to help me learn about my new team. Also I’m glad for all my new friends on this sight. I’m really happy for them that they didn’t have to put up with an old worn out clown who embarrasses me with the crap he does and I’m not even a fan of his. If Mayfield ever had to throw the ball as much as Brady or Rodgers do then he would easily be throwing for 5000 yards too. Those guys throw it 150 or 200 times more than Baker yearly. 150 times 7(yards per attempt) equals 1050. Then Baker’s throwing for over 5000 yards. It’s pretty simple arithmetic isn’t it Rod Munch?

Have a good feeling about Pratt. I also think that after AR left the Packers there was a lot of disorganization going on within the team. Adams got traded to the Raiders and so many other changes. Thinking we got a steal getting Pratt. A good fit for the Bucs as a backup QB, plus Trask could be gone next season to another team.

Want some irony? Trask will get some significant playing tell after Baker goes down with injury this season most likely from running for a first down, then out of nowhere Trask ends lighting up the scoreboard with this offense, we win the NFC South with him. He stirs up just enough controversy that the Buccaneers brass have to contemplate, What If?
Only partially joking. Trask’s MO, at least the way I understand it when he got the start at Florida is that he sat behind Felipe Franks, who got injured, he came in, zero expectations, he would finish that season throwing for 2,941 yards/25 TDs. Then he’d follow that up with 4,283 yards, 43 TD season in the SEC division, on his way to being 4th in the Heisman voting.
This would be our luck. Smh.

Brady was built like a noodle AND had a noodle arm coming out of college. That’s why he lasted until the 6th round. Rounds don’t write the final chapter. E.g., 1st rounder Jameis Winston, 2nd rounder Bret Favre, 6th rounder Tom Brady, undrafted Kurt Warner, etc.

Why should they try and develop any young quarterback when you can satisfy most of your fan base by singing average to below average veteran quarterbacks ? Just make sure they have a little popularity and this fan base will go crazy lol 🤣🤣!! You don’t have to build super bowls teams either like you once had to back in the day. Our fan base don’t care about becoming a dynasty or one of the best franchises in the NFL. We celebrate average like the Patriots, Steelers, Packers, Chiefs celebrates Superbowls . We celebrated a 9-8 season that won a division in the worse division in the NFL right now. We brag about about winning the division with a 8-9 record . And you are the type of fan that wants to dominate then you’ll not a real bucs fan lol 🤣. As long as we make the playoffs we are happy. We don’t even care about getting to the NFC Championship lol 🤣. As long as our average quarterback inflates his stats by playing bad for 3 quarters and 10 minutes our fan base is happy with that kind of quarterback play lol 🤣🤣 . Jason Licht is just keeping us average and that’s good enough for us . We didn’t get better this year we are the same team!!

Joe from Michigan. The only thing I’ve ever said about Jamies is give him a running game and our defense was ranked 32 in just about every category. Our running game was ranked at the bottom every year he was here but his rookie year. And our offense was ranked top 5 every year he was here without a running game at all. That’s facts that’s not nothing I’m making up you can actually look it up. The year we won 9 games we had a trash running game and our defense was ranked 26th . The part I hated about Jamies is the same thing John Gruen hated about him and that’s listening to coaches to much running plays he new wasn’t going to work. Go read what Gruen told him . Back then none of y’all cared about the running game remember if you were here than I think you came on here when Brady came but I could be wrong on that. But what I know I’m not worng on is nobody mentioned how bad the running game was back then until Brady came on the team. And now people care about the running game because of Baker. That’s the excuse y’all give Baker Mayfield. And also no cared how trash our offensive line was until Brady came and now that’s a excuse for Baker Mayfield. Go check where the bucs was ranked in offensive line, running game and defense and you will see what I’m talking about. Take off your hate glasses for Jamies and look at the facts!!
