Two Wins; 1 Yard To Tight Ends

September 15th, 2024

“We’ll figure it out, Cade.”

So the Bucs got their thrilling road win against a big-time Detroit team today with no sacks, no running game and a pile of injuries.

And now they’re 2-0 with a grand total of 1 yard of offensive production from tight ends.

It’s amazing how much these Bucs can improve (and Joe’s confident they will) while they are sitting at 2-0 with 2 wins in the conference. And they’re playing impressively. In Week 1, it was the offense and the kicker. In Week 2, it was the defense and the kicker.

That was no typo. The Bucs have just 1 yard of total offense from their tight ends room this season.

Rookie Devin Culp has yet to be active on a game day. Starter Cade Otton hasn’t gotten much action, and no targets have been directed to Payne Durham or Ko Kieft. Still, the Bucs are atop the NFC and poised to go 3-0 against a sorry Denver team next Sunday.

What happens when the Bucs get stars Calijah Kancey and Antoine Winfield Jr. back?

And what happens when the Bucs figure out how to incorporate their tight ends?

    Wins

  2. Dave Pear Says:

Denver has a defense, and Bo Nix can run, and Sean Payton has Todd’s number. Let’s not get ahead of our bourbon.

  3. MadMax Says:

    nothing….thats what happens, we’re nothing….bunch of scrubs

Denver is something… DO NOT take them lightly

  4. Rod Munch Says:

You didn’t need the TE in week one, and there’s only so many balls to go around.

In week 2, they should have had the TE in, helping block, on every play. The fact Otton got any passes thrown his way is a huge mistake.

You really really really can not take anything away from the offense today. It was a cluster caused by a historically pitiful effort by the trash RT who hopefully has already got a pink slip.

  5. MadMax Says:

But seriously, test my Oline adjustment, especially in this one…its a game to try it

Wirfs back at RT, Barton LT, Hainsey back at C

  6. Rod Munch Says:

MadMax – I like the idea I heard of signing Donovan Smith a lot more – then just Wirfs has to flip.

Barton is still learning center, and this is a complex offense with all the pulling of the interior offensive lineman, so moving him right now would be a huge mistake. Heck more Cody out to LT and put Hainsey in at guard before you move Barton.

With that said, Smith makes a lot more sense, and in any case would be excellent depth for the rest of the year.

What can’t happen is to ever see Sucke in a Bucs uniform ever again.

  7. Josiahbucsfan Says:

    @madmax

that has to be a joke lol Luke geodeke is a stud at right tackle why would we move anyone on our o line ? they all play the position that suits them best . I would only want smith as a backup .

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

MadMax and Rod Munch: A quote from Richie Aprile of the Sopranos, when they wanted him to build Beansie a ramp, “You’re out of your fu€k!ng minds”.

  9. MadMax Says:

But Barton was a LT…im sure you know that

  10. MadMax Says:

    Gotta figure something out Joeinmich

  11. unbelievable Says:

@Joe in Mich – Richie’s mouth wound up to be his undoing.

  12. MadMax Says:

@Josiah, Luke is injured….im talking about until he can get back dummy

  13. unbelievable Says:

@Max if Barton wasn’t a rookie, playing center again for the first time in years I think they would consider what you’re saying. But he’s so new to playing center I don’t think they wanna mess with that. Besides, Luke should be back next week if hope. And if not, for the love of God, Coen needs to attach a TE to Skule. Literally.

  14. MadMax Says:

this is why i hate people and dealing with them

  15. MadMax Says:

Thanks Unbe, i know…we’ll see I guess, hopefully Luke is back soon…that ish was ugly out there on the right side…rewatch it

  16. Dave Pear Says:

Joe in Mich — you speak well. Check on Drule to see if he’s in Windsor yet.

  17. unbelievable Says:

Nah man, I’m good. I don’t want to ever watch Skule play RT again. lol.

It was beyond ugly. Mauch was getting manhandled too. Even Wirfs didn’t look all that great the last 2 weeks. Someone else claimed he has a high ankle sprain… not sure if that’s true or not?

  18. MadMax Says:

    haha i feel ya

  19. adam from ny Says:

i have the bucs in a dogfight this upcoming sunday with payton’s gang…

let’s not forget he could tell them to play dirty too…

if denver falls to 0-3 their season is on the brink…so payton will have them amped up for their jobs…

bucs gotta come prepared and not think about philly, or still be gloating over detroit…

this game has trap game written all over it…especially since all pundits will be talking and praising the bucs starting tomorrow morning

  20. adam from ny Says:

the right side of the line ain’t lookin’ too good right about now

  21. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

I love the use of tight ends. The little dump pass just behind the linebacker is the best way to help the running game become effective. Hopefully, this week will be their chance to shine.

  22. dmatt Says:

Why didn’t they put Ko Kief out there to assist Skule? Skule appeared scared n intimidated by Hutchinson. Let’s put Elijah Klein out there. At least he’s a fighter n won’t just allow any DE to have their day with him. Yeah, what’s up with lack of work for tight ends. The jury is still out on Cade Otton, is he the second coming of OJ Howard?

  23. lambchop Says:

Some of you guys play madden too much. Just get another vet off the street to backup RT. Donovan probably isn’t even in game shape and there may be bridges/egos burned when we let him walk.

  24. Buc4evr Says:

Don’t understand why the Bucs didn’t go hurry up, screens to RB, more slants to WRs. Why 5 step drops since Coen saw that Baker was getting killed? Why didn’t Skule get much help?

  25. Badbucs Says:

Agreed Unbelievable. We were exposed yesterday. The other teams are going to start stunting to get to Mauch when Luke gets back. Wirfs must have an issue. We seldom run to that side. Or Brederson is just too weak. I don’t see any great run game anytime soon.

  26. Bucs Guy Says:

The only stat I care about is Wins.

  27. Joe in Michigan Says:

MadMax: I’ve wanted the Bucs to invest a mid-round pick in a Swing Tackle for years now. Hopefully Goedeke will be back soon.

  28. BucU Says:

Joe, Who is this Callijah Kancey person you speak of?

  29. BucU Says:

“”bucs gotta come prepared and not think about philly, or still be gloating over detroit…””

    Amen to that brother!

  30. heyjude Says:

Love the picture and the heading underneath! Perfect!

  31. Lakeland Says:

One pass attempt to the running backs against Detroit. They should have nickel and dime Detroit all day long with screens, hitches, slants etc..

    Buc4evr, l totally agree

  32. BakerFan Says:

Why so many TE’s on the roster and they are not used. Bring Sterling Shepard up and send one of those TE’s down to practice squad.

  33. Dave Pear Says:

Bakerfan – I expect to see Shep elevated. Neither JMac nor Palmer can block well. Shep is a pro.

  34. catcard202 Says:

As I stated after Liam was hired away from Kentucky, TE’s will not be a big part of the passing game. Coen likes to use 12 personnel & have the TE as blocking options. They will get a few slip routes up the seam or dump routes off play-action but in no form or fashion should you expect any TE in his offense to be a factor. (But they should end up with some good yards/catch because no one will expect them to get their # called more a couple times a game)

For context, in 2023 at UK, Coen’s top 4 TE’s combined for 28 catches on the season.

  35. Sacker58 Says:

Don’t overlook denver, remember who their coach is!

  36. BAKERSBucs says Says:

I appreciate all the advice for Todd bowles on how to correct line issues but I don’t think bowles needs u r couch potatoes advice he did an outstanding job without any of u r dumb as dirt advice

  37. BAKERSBucs says Says:

I saw Kyle T come alive this wee k he adde ice to the coolers this week good job keep up the good work

  38. BAKERSBucs says Says:

I do remember there coach the jackass that thru a ton of money down the drain & sent the money man to steelers what an idiot plus what disrespect that jackass deserves a worse record than panthers & that’s saying alot
