Tony Dungy’s Key To Beating The Eagles

September 26th, 2024

No hesitation in the words from Tampa resident and Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Tony Dungy, aka Father Dungy.

Want to beat the Eagles on Sunday, Todd Bowles?

Dungy said on NBC’s YouTube channel that the Eagles’ run-pass option will be on center stage and the Bucs have to think run at all costs.

“You gotta live with, ‘Hey, if he pulls it out and throws it to those receivers, I’m ok with that,'” Dungy said of Eagles QB Jalen Hurts. “You gotta load the box. Play every play [on defense] as if it’s a running play. And they’ve got, Tampa does, have a little edge here because [Eagles receivers] A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith may not be in the lineup. … Make the Eagles throw the football.”

Joe will add that’s more than “a little edge” if Brown and Smith don’t play.

Interestingly, Dungy, the retired defensive mastermind, said he thought the Bucs “weren’t quite prepared” for the Denver offense.

We had trouble containing Daniels, and Nix. Buc defenders got confused on who had the back, who has the QB. Better figure it out fast, or hurts will kill us running. Tony, tell Todd how it’s done. Tell them how you handled Vick back in the day.

  2. Cobraboy Says:

“Weren’t quite prepared for the Bronco’s offense.”

Then the Buc D coaches are idiots.

  3. Lt. Dan Says:

I’m still pissed about that Broncos game. Win that and at 3-0 the Eagles game doesn’t loom so large. Piss poor preparation and play.

  4. infomeplease Says:

Hope VV50 is back. That would help!

  5. heyjude Says:

Always liked Tony. Good to hear his words about the Eagles. Guess a lot is riding on Brown and Smith not playing on Sunday. They do still have Barkley. Hoping for the Bucs winning this.

  6. Dave Pear Says:

If Dungy came to practice and taught Todd how to teach defense especially pass coverage, that would be a key to beating the Eagles.

Up in NC and may lose power so here is this week’s wagering lineup:

Jacksonville +6.5 May go to +7 That’s all I see of interest this week.

Here is the record as posted here each week:

    Week 1: 2-3
    Week 2: 1-1
    Week 3: 5-1 To date: 8-5 62.5%

  8. Lord Cornelius Says:

I don’t know why we didn’t play more press coverage with the Broncos. In general it’s hard to play any good D if the front 5 is as bad as it was though

  9. Lakeland Says:

The Bucs secondary haven’t gave up a TD all year. They are not the reason why the Bucs lost to Denver. The reason is the offense, well lack of offer.

  10. Lakeland Says:

    *lack of offense

  11. Simeon4HOF Says:

“Not quite prepared.” Sure wasn’t. Father Dungy would know. Getting our 3rd Sack of the season would surely help, without allowing 11 more. Glad Goedeke is ok and trending up. No OL sync catastrophies along with an unprepared chaotic looking injured D combo not a recipe for success

  12. BucU Says:

Dungy was the GM as well as HC?

  13. Bucnjim Says:

Not getting behind by 14 would be a great way to start. That way we can use our actual game plan and not have to abandon everything practiced for the week. We match up pretty well with what the Eagles try and do though.

  14. Lakeland Says:

Oh boy, l wish this Bucs team had half of the talent, heart, strength, guts, skills that Dungy/Kiffin defense had.

Rich McKay the greatest Defensive drafting GM ever

  15. Defense Rules Says:

BucnJim … ‘Not getting behind by 14 would be a great way to start. That way we can use our actual game plan and not have to abandon everything practiced for the week.’

Wow Jim, when I saw the ‘not getting behind by 14’ I thought ‘That rarely happens anymore to our Bucs’. Man was I wrong.

o 2023: Bucs were behind by 14 or more points in 6 games (Eagles, Lions, Bills, 49ers, Colts, Saints). WE LOST THEM ALL.

o 2022: Bucs were behind by 14 or more points in 4 games (Chiefs, Panthers, 49ers, Panthers). WE LOST ALL BUT 1 OF THOSE (we came back to beat the Panthers 30-24 that year).

So if we fall behind by 14 points at any point in a ballgame (like we did in the 1st qtr against the Broncos), odds are pretty danged good that we’ll lose (we’ve won 1 and lost 10 of those games since 2022).

Of course, those losses came against just about all quality teams. They’re good teams for a reason.

  16. David Says:

Absolutely. If they don’t play, I have no problem with the DBs being one on one. Stop the run and contain HURTS from running.

  17. Badbucs Says:

Unfortunately we have a loser mentality of”abandoning the game plan.” 14 points in the first quarter should just be a wakeup call. Go get a touchdown. Wallah only 7 points. Down 14 with 5 minutes to go is different. But you should have a plan for that too. Once again pathetic coaching at some level is killing us. Playing scared is for losers. Do we know what a trick play is? I couldn’t tell. It’s been so long since I’ve seen one.

  18. Badbucs Says:

Oh, that’s right, only teams that want to win use those.
