Tom Moore Talks “Committed” Baker Mayfield

September 3rd, 2024

So what’s Baker Mayfield going to do with the fat bag of cash the Bucs put in his lap?

That’s unclear. But per legendary Bucs senior offensive assistant Tom Moore, Peyton Manning’s longtime playcaller, Mayfield won’t be taking his foot off the gas.

Moore, 85, told SiriusXM NFL Radio that Mayfield’s well-known competitive nature goes far beyond game days.

“The big thing Baker’s got going for him is he is a consummate competitor. And competing is one thing, but doing what you have to do to allow yourself to compete, that’s a big thing,” Moore said.

“And he’s committed. He has total commitment to being the very best, and he works at it.”

That’s a very high compliment from Moore and, frankly, the Bucs couldn’t ask for more from any player. As Moore said, compete and do just about everything possible to compete at the very highest level.

Hopefully, Mayfield’s work ethic and fire will rub off on a few additional teammates this season.

He’s no good at anything. Just ask all the experts on this site

  2. Kenton Smith Says:

He’s not very big in stature. But put about 52 large and fast world class athletes behind him and he is huge. Doing what he has to do to compete. And that’s a “ big thing “.

  3. A Bucs Fan Says:

Baker is a leader and works hard. Hopefully, he will prove to become a consistent winner on the NFL level too.

  4. Larrd Says:

Moore was P. Manning guru mentor, if I recall. It is probably hard to impress him in regard to hard work, commitment, and competitiveness.

  5. Mike C Says:

    L F G! LBC Let Bake Cook!

  6. 813BUCBOI Says:

he just got paid!!!!!…he should be committed lol

    GO BUCS!!!!

Can you move on from this narrative? Granted, Baker's contract is nothing to sneeze at from an 'average Joe's' perspective, but compared to what many others rec'd, the Bucs got Baker at a 'Blue Light' special.

  8. BucU Says:

I fully expect a huge year from BM. He’ll have a better Oline. A better running attack. A better WR core. A better offensive mind at OC. Pretty much everywhere on offense is better. Good news is we don’t have to wait much longer to find out.

  9. The Canales Curse Says:

In other words, low celling, but he tries really hard.

  10. JimBobBuc Says:

I’m looking for Bake to be more accurate, with better footwork, on his throws. Too many overthrows, and better touch on the long throws. I wonder how he will handle calling the protection schemes too, as in the Detroit playoff game, the blitzes hurt them. I’m still a Bake supporter and think he’ll have a good year.

    L.F.B.!!

  12. PSL Bob Says:

All the doubters out there key on one particular trait – inconsistency. If he’s able to put together another season like last year, win the division, and take the team deeper into the playoffs, some of those current doubters might just jump on the Baker bandwagon.

  13. Baking with Evans Says:

We got Baker at the right time. He is more mature and ready to make the best out of his career. Best of all he has a team that will support his vision with the right mindset.

    We got this!

    LFG!!!!!

  14. Allen Lofton Says:

Mayfield’s work ethic and fire didn’t rub off on D. White last year.

  15. orlbucfan Says:

Big whoop. D. White is passe. I sure hope Coen has some QB rollouts up his sleeve for BM and posse. Go Bucs!!

  16. Hodad Says:

One thing Baker should NOT do with that fat check he got is give it to any of his relatives to invest for him!

  17. Dave Pear Says:

He said the same thing about Kyle Glennon. Oh, wait.

Well how would Tom Moore know as much about quarterbacks as Osqueeltard.

  18. Pickgrin Says:

    “Peyton Manning’s longtime playcaller”

More like the guy in Manning’s ear on gameday throwing out suggestions..LOL

  19. heyjude Says:

Loving Baker even more. That is a great compliment coming from Tom Moore.

Dave – I think Glennon was committed to the Bucs and played well. Jon Gruden liked him and had him at the Raiders. I think from previous stats that Mike Evans alone had around 6 TDs thrown by Glennon. We haven’t seen too much from Kyle yet to really know how he would do through full games. Doesn’t seem that bad from what we have seen though. I am thinking another team may go for him after this season.

    Dave Pear,

You seriously need to start charging Kyle Trask rent. He is obviously staying
    in your head for free.

  21. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Speaking of Kyle, I get the feeling that he has yet to exude the confidence and leadership you look for. Maybe he doesn’t read defenses fast enough and has a propensity to stare down receivers. Just my opinion.

  22. GoneGator Says:

Baker is not just looking to improve – it’s SB WIN or bust… That’s his attitude

    Imo…
He’s not going to be one of those guys who regress after getting a payday.
He’s still got a LOT to prove. And don’t think he’s not aware that his “fat bag of cash” is considerably smaller than that of Tua, Trevor, Love, and on and on and on and that many talking heads (and some fans) still view him as suspect.

I think he’s in a much better place than he’s ever been before and “settled in”, but he’s still in prove it mode, maybe even more so than last year.

His bag of cash will top 50ml per year after he leads TB on a couple deep playoff runs!

  23. stpetebucfan Says:

Some guys just take it VERY SERIOUSLY!!! I worked for a great guy once in radio. He had starred at the Citadel in both basketball and tennis. He was a fierce competitor!!! No matter what the game! I played on the stations hoops team along side of him and all of us knew to bust our butts, it wasn’t for fun it was to WIN!!

He once made the finals of the South Carolina state tennis championship, lost, and pretty much wouldn’t talk for a week after. I tried to find out why and he blew me off, like I wouldn’t understand. He was right. I love to compete but not like that guy or BAKER!!!

I have the feeling that Baker would go all out even in a game checkers.

Baker mayfield will be the least of these Bucs problems….come Sunday.

  25. White Tiger Says:

Tom Moore doesn’t give roses to folks. He’s legendary, and any praise from him is considered noteworthy. This is an interesting comment from a legend.

  26. Marky Mark Says:

Character counts. The problem with stats and measurables is you can,t measure heart and commitment. Depervert Watson had great measurables and stats but he is morally corrupt with his treatment of women. His first 2 years years were a disaster because he could care less. He got his guaranteed money now he will take it easy till he can retire rich. The real superstar is his lawyer.
