Todd Bowles Talks Managing Success

September 18th, 2024

Fans may remember what happened last season after the Bucs started 3-1.

Tampa Bay had a Week 5 bye and it seemed the team was riding too high for being a three-game winner.

In fact, players and coaches acknowledged publicly that perhaps the club lost its edge a bit at that time. As fans remember, that 3-1 record quickly became 4-7.

Todd Bowles knows he has to avoid that type of complacency this season. It should be easy, but it’s a process.

“You try to move on from [Sunday’s win,]” Bowles told the Buccaneers Radio Network. “With young guys, it’s harder to handle success than it is failure. So, keeping them grounded and making sure we keep doing the little things for us to get better is what we stress and what’s important for us.”

The Bucs do have another fresh crop of rookies, but it’s not nearly as many as last year, so keeping the team grounded after a big win should be easier. Playing the bumbling Broncos at home certainly helps.

Start in the O-line room. Spend extra time reviewing the Druler and his horror show, but also everyone else, even Wirfs, had major gaffs. Don’t let them out of the room until the Druler’s replacement is named, if our glass eating donkey isn’t cleared yet. And until everyone knows their own personal corrective action plan .

And after seeing the Eagles totally gift the Falcons on MNF, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, next time we have a 3rd and 6 with a 4 point lead, less than a minute to go, and opponent with only one time out, just run the ball, suck out the last TO, and punt .

And Dean – get some ointment for those burns you sustained on the Lions first completion. What do you want to bet the Broncos will try the exact same thing?

Best cure for 3-1 celebrations is going 4-0. That starts with winning against the Broncos. Go coach go!

  5. Beeej Says:

I initially thought Philly would be a loss, no longer. They have an average offense and no pass rush

  6. Not My NFL! Says:

@Beeej But don’t underestimate Atlanta by no means that’s a very talented team to be taken seriously.

It’s being reported that Goedeke is back practicing!

Every team should be taken seriously or your ass will handed to you

This is the NFL. Any given Sunday. Raiders beat Ravens.Saints beat Dallas. Patriots beat Bengals. There are no easy games It is a long season If the games were predictable, we’d all be rich

I’m guessing the memory of last year’s crash will be fresh enough to avoid a repeat.

    ^^^^^^^^
    Great news!

This why character and culture matter so much. You have to have guys that hold themselves and their teammates to higher standards.

Guys like Tykee Smith are essential. Georgia had a championship goal. One loss and your season is not just done, but your season is a waste. Tykee was the Captain of that team. He needs to get his team up and ready for Alabama and Ball State.

    Very true Buddha.

Of course the geniuses that pencil in wins and loses 24 hours after the schedule comes out will never believe that.

  14. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Buddha Raiders ravens is the only sort of surprise. The other two I personally saw coming. Alvin Kamara destroys Mike Zimmer defenses and Zac Taylor is 1-10 in the first two weeks of the regular season as a head coach.

  15. Vanessa Anne Says:

    @Beeej @Buddha

Agree completely. We need to take every week seriously and the entire team needs to bring its A-Game.

The pieces are there for Atlanta. The question is how soon does it all gel for them? Thankfully, our week 8 game with them is at home, so ideally the home field advantage is with us that week. I’m certain we’ll all know by then whether or not it’s coming together for them.

With the Raiders, Ravens, Saints and Cowboys all on our schedule, we’ll need to be on our toes for those games too. I certainly didn’t predict the Raiders or the Saints to win, and I’m not discounting Dallas or Baltimore simply because of those two losses.

    GO BUCS!!!

  16. Dave Pear Says:

Excellent news on Luke, Bucs Fan. Sometimes they can practice but still aren’t cleared from the protocol for a game. Hopefully this is all systems go. Now we are waiting to read about who the backup OT is to replace the Druler. Please.

  17. First Name Greatest Says:

Just need Bowles to take pass defense seriously, if a defense can get off the field it gives the offense more chances and keeps the defense rested. defenders will be tired after all those snaps last week.

    Be better bowles

  18. SenileSenior Says:

Neither am I discounting any team, Vanessa Anne, et al. One game at a time as we confront the opposition. The right coaching and the right culture guard against complacency. It remains a long season.

    Go Bucs!!

  19. GoneGator Says:

Adapt, adjust, get better…. Head down and work…. Every day, every week

To quote the (band) Talking Heads: “Cut back the weakness reinforce what is strong” 🤘🏼

  20. JimBobBuc Says:

The Bucs’ vets need to step up and settle down the young guys, telling them about last year. The coaches need to grade these guys hard, especially on offense. Denver a trap game?

  21. orlbucfan Says:

The Bye Week is a ways off. Hopefully, the Bus won’t be the serious IR walking wounded by then. We’ve had seasons like that. Bowles sets the tone for his entire team. He knows what he is doing. His vets will take their cues from him, and set it for the younger guys. I just want to see Sean Payton get whacked bad as in murdered on the field. No offense to Denver, but I hate their HC!
