Todd Bowles Points To Interior Defensive Line Woes

September 24th, 2024

If you like to hear about less conventional/more subjective stats like “quarterback pressures,” Joe already shared how defensive linemen Logan Hall and Greg Gaines didn’t generate any on Sunday.

They’re the guys who got the majority of Tampa Bay’s D-line action.

Gaines and Hall each played more than two-thirds of the snaps against Denver.

Todd Bowles pointed to the dual threat nature of Broncos rookie QB Bo Nix as a major issue for his defensive line. And it wasn’t just about containing Nix off the edges.

“I thought it gave us a problem, especially our interior [defensive line], dropping back sitting back there not being able to close the pocket,” Bowles told SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Joe has finally watched all the game film, and damn, the Bucs made the Broncos’ offensive line look far more special than it is.

Bowles also pointed to the Bucs falling apart once the Broncos tilted the score in their favor.

“We got behind and we tried to force the issues and made more mistakes — mistake after mistake,” Bowles said. “And [we] just got to write it off as a bad loss and give them credit.”

I like that last comment, it was a bad loss where you could point fingers at MULTIPLE issues. The Broncos took advantage and we gotta move on and get better. Really hoping to see an improved performance with some guys hopefully back in the lineup and Bucky getting the rock.

Huge problem in the trenches both side of ball. Have the fewest sacks thru 3 games and tied for 3rd in most allowed. If they can’t scheme to fix it’s going to be a long season.

  3. Lakeland Says:

Logan Hall wasn’t a sack guy in college. I guess they drafted him for other reasons than sack. Just take a look at his college stats at Houston.

He definitely wasn’t an Ed Oliver

  4. Lakeland Says:

    Before the 2019 NFL draft,

90% of Bucs fans on JBF wanted to draft DT Ed Oliver
But the Mad Genius Jason Licht drafted ILB Devin White

The Bucs drafted Vita Vea during the prior draft in 2018
So we wanted Vita Vea, Ed Oliver on the DLine together for years

    Jason Licht screwed that up

this is what I said but my comments are not showing up on the website. why joe?

Joe – here is a homework assignment? What is the bucs record under bowles era when we give up an opening drive touchdown to begin the game down 7-0? I almost think we are winless. It actually snowballs from there and i feel we usually go down 14-0 after a quick offense 3 and out. I remember these games for sure: 2022 packers, 2022 chiefs, 2023 saints, 2024 broncos. all those games were buzzsaws (aside from the packers but we were down early and bad). the team just wilts and even worse, all of those games were at home with lots of anticipation!

Jason’s done a great job bit hall stinks! Only thing he ever did was ruin Jensen career

  7. PSL Bob Says:

Look, this was just a bad game all around. Bad coaching, bad o-line play, Mayfield with happy feet and not getting rid of the ball quickly enough, lack of pressure/sacks on the QB, poor tackling. You name, we did it.

I think everyone just needs to take a deep breath and have faith that this group is resilient enough to get things together. It wouldn’t hurt if we could get some of our starters back.

  8. Knothead71 Says:

The Bucs just don’t seem to be mentally tough. Even Wirffs got beat a couple of times. I don’t think they exactly give up but it’s almost like if the going gets tough or they get beat a couple times early in a game they lose their will to fight.
I’m holding out hope that Coach Bowels can right the ship quickly. LET’S GO BUCS!

  9. SenileSenior Says:

Ironic that Devon White turned out the way he did.

  10. Saskbucs Says:

Lakeland… I don’t know about that. Ed Oliver was certainly a name but other than White I recall most fans asking for Josh Allen (Edge Jax). Anyway, don’t matter now, we got our SB with White. Not sure what was out there for DL after Hall… weak class I think.

  11. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

@Lakeland, Like every other GM in the NFL, Licht would love to go back in time and change some decisions he made in the draft. But Devin White played such an instrumental role on the Bucs defense the year we won the Super Bowl I can’t say he screwed up by picking White.

It’s sad that he didn’t play at that level for another 10 years but he helped us to get to the boat parade, and that was priceless.

  12. Lakeland Says:

We did win a Super Bowl with Devin White. Then he thought he was bigger than the team. He started making demands for money, was even comparing himself to Ray Lewis. He thought he was better than he was, he had the same problem at LSU.

  13. Crunchbuc76 Says:

May I also add the TEAL reason for the blowout loss…Payton kicked Bowles ass. Wasn’t even close

  14. Crunchbuc76 Says:

    *REAL

  15. Hodad Says:

I wish it was just our interior D line that struggled, but that’s not the case. YaYa, and JTS couldn’t beat a rookie tackle once all game. That’s the sad truth, and why you won’t win many games getting 2 sacks in three games! We know JTS is a bust, looks like we can add YaYa to the list.

  16. Crickett Baker Says:

I hate it when people say that Mayfield has “happy feet”. They ought to call them something else. “De feet?”
