Todd Bowles: No More “Scrubs”

September 2nd, 2024

Commandos QB Jayden Daniels.

Seems like Bucs coach Todd Bowles has a world of respect for Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels. But he’s careful not to have too much respect.

Bowles remarked today that Daniels was drafted No. 2 overall this past spring “for a reason.” That doesn’t mean Daniels is a one-man gang for the Commandos.

“If you find yourself just facing a rookie quarterback, the other 10 guys will kill you,” Bowles said. “We’re facing the Redsk!ns, we’re not facing Jayden Daniels.”

Joe loves how Bowles is true to his old team. Bowles, of course ,was a starting safety for Washington when “The Hogs” and “The Smurfs” ruled the NFL. Bowles won a ring with Washington. Those guys, Bowles’ old teammates, hate the new name for Washington’s franchise and are very vocal about it.

Seem like Bowles is not hip with the new name either — well done, Todd! Standing-O!

This doesn’t mean Bowles is disrespecting Daniels. Bowles has high regard for him.

“Any time you face a dual-threat quarterback, it’s going to be a problem,” Bowles said. “He can beat you with his legs or his arm.”

More than once Bowles praised Daniels as being “accurate.”

And with the rookie quarterback comes the unknown.

“Every time you start the season out, you really have no idea what the other team will do,” Bowles said.

If anyone still thought worthless preseason games were a thing, Bowles reminded Bucs fans that schlock is done for another 11 months.

“We don’t play any scrubs anymore,” Bowles said. “No one is playing their three’s and fours [like] in preseason.”

    ONLY CONCERN – KJ Britt

Still shocked the Bucs didn’t draft a speedy MLB. The NFL is about matchups. The guy WAS will look to expose is KJ Britt. He’s slow. He cannot spy or rush Daniels. That limits Britt to zone or man. They’ll play him mostly in zone. If the Bucs don’t get a pass rush, the middle of the field will be open.

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Sly that’s what JJ Russell and SirVocea Dennis are for.

  3. Beeej Says:

KJ is same speed as LVD

  4. Joe Says:

@Sly that’s what JJ Russell and SirVocea Dennis are for.

If you’re waiting on Dennis to make an impact other than with the first team hot tub squad, you may have to wait a while.

(Joe has more faith in J.J. Russell than Dennis.)

Britt will be fine. He’s damn good against the run. Bucs defense smothered the Packers and Eagles late in the season last year with Britt. Those two teams had more playmakers and better quarterbacks than a rookie making his first start on a terrible team last year.

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Joe Fair points that I don’t disagree with. I was writing to Sly’s concern about Britts pass coverage and lack of speed with Jayden Daniels dual threat ability. Its also why I listed JJ first. As far as I’m concerned, Dennis is the 4th backer until proven otherwise.

Hopefully he can shake off the injury bug and contribute this year. The Bucs will be adding to that room next year via FA and the draft regardless.

LOL!OLOLOLLOLOLOL!!!!!!! Yeah, that’s not even remotely true.

Britt, even in preseason vs the scrubs, looked slow.

I think teams are going to pick on him in the pass game over and over and over again because of his lack of speed. Will be interesting to see what Bowles does to try to cover for it.

  7. Irishmist Says:

Pass rushers are going to have to stay in their lanes, and we should either have LVD or Britt as a spy. If you blitz him and play man, he has the arm and the legs to burn you. We should play him like we played Mahomes in the SB. He’s got talent, but few rookies are known for their patience.

  8. Hodad Says:

How Dennis didn’t get cut for Grier is beyond me. It’s not like Dennis is some top pick you wait on. Taken in the 5th round isn’t much above being an UDFA like Grier. Be interesting to see if Dennis is active this week.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We just need to learn how to stop 3rd and 17 and we’ll be just fine.

  10. JimBobBuc Says:

I’m feeling deja vu with Daniels being like Stroud last year. I like the idea of Tykee subbing for Britt to spy Daniels.

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

I’m with Hodad. SVD did nothing in the Colts game last year. I like Grier – his pick was no fluke as he had three pick-sixes in college.

  12. Chris Says:

Britt is a thumper, go watch Divisional Detroit Game, agree with you on the coverage, but Jose Ramirez could sub in on 3rd downs, he’s had 3 sacks in preseason.

  13. Buc1987 Says:

No, I don’t want no scrub
A scrub is a guy that can’t get no love from me
    Hangin’ out the passenger side
    Of his best friend’s ride
    Trying to holla at me

  14. Travis Says:

Daniels skinny azz better hope Vea doesn’t get a clean shot lol

  15. Pickgrin Says:

Sirvocea Dennis will be just fine if he can stay healthy. He’s an upgrade over Britt on obvious passing downs and will get snaps this year to prove it…..

  16. 1#bucsfan Says:

    Buc87 hahahaha that’s a oldie

  17. Joe Says:

***IF*** he can put a uniform on and get on the field… maybe. The only thing he has shown Joe is he’s brittle.

Britt is a thumper, go watch Divisional Detroit Game

    ———-

That Detroit game is why he’s a problem.

On back to back plays, he made a good tackle on one when Detroit wanted to run it up the middle, then on the very next play the RB easily beat him to the edge.

I don’t know what Bowles plan is for him, but hopefully he uses him a lot better than he used White – where you had a guy that excelled at attacking and making plays and wasn’t good in coverage, yet Bowles just had him sit back in zone 95% of the time. If he uses Britt the same way, it’s going to be a disaster.

  19. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

I still call them the Redskins, too. And that baseball team is still the Cleveland Indians. What a crybaby, sensitive world we live in!

  20. Fred McNeil Says:

I don’t believe Britt will be nearly that bad in coverage.

  21. Dave Pear Says:

Surely hope that Todd doesn’t try to get too metaphysical with his defensive calls. He has enough to confuse the rookie without confusing his own guys. Make him throw and for crust’s sake, cover a slant and grab a man after two seconds in zone. Jamus.

We shall see, but in preseason he wasn’t able to keep up with scrub TEs and was giving up plays.

I don’t see how this turns out well, but I also don’t know how they don’t see it coming, which means there must be some sort of plan. I hope.

  23. Badbucs Says:

Todd will try to get away with it. The Britt torchings will eventually force his hand. Tykee or Izien will get mixed in and maybe SVD can get out of the tub for a few games. I’m shocked there were no IlBs on waivers for us to add. Our home cooking isn’t that good. At least we picked up an IOL. Still looking decent overall as long as you don’t ask an expert. Go Bucs!!

  24. OR Buc Says:

I agree with Hodad, wish we would’ve kept Grier. He is in the practice squad, so hopefully it’ll work itself out.

Also, although I agree with Bowles freedom to call them whatever he wants, especially having played for them, it is a derogatory term, like others terms we don’t call minorities. It’s just respect for everyone.

That being said, their name does suck.

  25. adam from ny Says:

have no fear, grier is here……….

well, at least on the practice squad…

Can’t post links here, Google draft profiles for both. KJ Britt 4.75 40. LD? 4.65

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Beeej – You can watch actual games, and see David shutting down TE’s running 4.5, and know he’s a lot lot faster. I see different numbers for David’s 40, but I see from scouts at the combine saying he ran a 4.56 – which would match the last decade of tape we’ve seen on the field. Also, an interesting note that I don’t recall from the time, David actually bulked up to 233 pounds for the combine, which is much heavier than his playing weight – so if he ran a 4.56 then, he was probably closer to being a 4.5 flat type player, which again, matches the last decade of film. David, I don’t think, is that fast anymore, but there’s no doubt he’s at least a full step faster than Britt, which, in the NFL is a lot.

Britt, meanwhile, ran a 4.76, or .2 slower, which is a huge difference. David also ran a 4.22 20 yard shuttle, while Britt was at 4.40, again, a huge difference.

Britt was a late round pick because of his limited athletic ability. He has everything else you’d want, he knows what he should be doing, he’s a good tackler, but he’s going to be taken advantage by opposing teams because of his lack of speed. In the preseason I was watching him on a bunch of plays just to see how they’d use him, and he flat out could not keep up with 2nd and 3rd string TEs.

I don’t know what Bowles’ plan is, but the lack of speed from Britt is well known so I assume he has a plan to try to cover that up. Hopefully it’s not just sitting back in a passive zone where you guard a spot, and thus speed isn’t as important.

  28. 76 bucsfan46 Says:

I think JJ is better, been trying to figure out what Britt does better than him.

  29. 76 bucsfan46 Says:

JJ Russell is slower than Britt, ran 4.82 at combine, wow I never would have guessed the way he plays.

  30. 76 bucsfan46 Says:

Dennis runs 4.6 at combine with 41.5 vertical. That’s impressive. Too bad he can’t stay healthy, availability is the best ability they say

  31. Dave Pear Says:

Rookie QB, first game. Any decent defensive coordinator would be able to shut him down and have his head spinning so hard he wouldn’t know whether to take a dump or eat a candy bar. But we have Todd, renowned genius, not only as DC but also HC. It should follow that this game will be a laugher with the Bucs winning, going away.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

They’ll always be the Washington Redskins to me…but I suppose the newer generations will get use to the new name.

They should have just went with ‘Washington Redskirts’

  33. garro Says:

“Every time you start the season out, you really have no idea what the other team will do,”

He aint’ wrong. But that works both ways.

    Go Bucs!

  34. heyjude Says:

Agree with Coach Bowles. From another Joe article the poll was that 57% of the Commanders fans thought they would win the Bucs. That’s not a great amount of fans putting faith in the QB and team. Daniels looks really good and could be another C.J. Stroud. But the coaches and team play a big part too. C.J. found a good fit. We are still unsure about Daniels because we haven’t really seen him play in a full game. Not a lot of film. Basically only college film to look at.

  35. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Seems everyone thinks stroud is the 2nd coming lest we forget he lost to bryce young & the lowly panthers 6to9.we need to c stroud for another year doesn’t everyone complain bout baker & consistency we all will c

  36. orlbucfan Says:

Dimwit ownership should have let the DC fans pick the new name for the team. “Commanders” is a joke. Should be an interesting game. Hope the central FL weather cooperates. We’ve had some nasty monsoons lately.
