Todd Bowles Addresses YaYa Diaby Rust

September 11th, 2024

So the bully of the Buccaneers’ pass rush, YaYa Diaby, had a quiet day Sunday, though Joe liked his fight coming off an injury that cost him weeks of practice.

Before the game, Diaby was on the Buccaneers Radio Network talking about how his sprained ankle is 100 percent in the past and he can’t wait to show the football world who YaYa Diaby really is.

“Man, I’ve been itchin. I’ve been itchin’ to get back, man, and I feel so good right now. I’m ready to go and ready to give it my all,” Diaby said.

Today, Todd Bowles was asked whether Diaby was shaking off rust Sunday against Washington. Diaby did not register on the game’s stat sheet, other than for playing 54 percent of the defensive snaps.

Bowles seemed to acknowledge Diaby was rusty but it wasn’t due to effort or energy.

“Yeah, he played hard and he played fast,” Bowles said. “It’ll get better as the weeks go on. We’re comfortable with that. But he’s playing hard, and that’s what we liked about him.”

Joe saw Diaby get his share of pressure he certainly looked “itchin'” like he talked about in the pregame. He had a lot of juice in his legs.

Yeah, rust is real, especially in Week 1 following an injury. But Joe thinks Diaby is primed to bounce back in a hurry.

    Go YaYa!

  2. Cometowin2 Says:

He is such a critical piece of our defense. He probably would have been better if it had been a less mobile quarterback. Go Yaya!!!

  3. A Bucs Fan Says:

    3 sacks this Sunday!

  4. Boge Says:

If he plays the same against the Lion’s Jared isnt getting away.

  5. BucU Says:

Wonder how much rust Kancey is gonna have when you report he’ll be out indefinitely today or tomorrow. You all know that’s gonna happen.

  6. A Bucs Fan Says:

Lions star RT Sewell DNP today with an ankle injury. Something to monitor!

  7. WiseCrack Says:

Yeah, he had that rookie QB running for his life though.

And Todd said the other day. The plan was to make the rookie beat them with his legs.

Guessing Yaya did his part and that is why Todd is satisfied.

  8. BucsDan Says:

Bucs defense played against an athletic phenomenon at QB last week in Daniels. Defense had him in the crosshairs at least 3 times and the speedy QB was able to escape. I agree with posters above that if put in similar positions, other QBs with less speed will not be escaping.

  9. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Porcelain doll Cancey will have plenty of rust whenever he plays.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

‘Joe saw Diaby get his share of pressure’.

You need to have a talk with the Pro-Football-Reference guys Joe. They showed YaYa with only 1 pressure. Matter of fact, they only credited our entire defense with 9 pressures all game (2 sacks, 1 QB knockdown & 6 hurries). And to make that sting even more, they credited Washington’s defense with 12 pressures (1 sack, 3 QB knockdowns & 8 hurries).

Of course Joe, if there’s anything you’ve taught me it’s that sacks counts. Pressures don’t count. YaYa needs to put Goff on the ground Sunday.

  11. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @DR

I feel like something is wrong with how they are calculating pressures.

Jayden Daniels had 16 rush attempts and only a few of those in the red zone were designed runs. The majority (at least 12 I’d guess), were scrambles where it was a pass play, there was pressure, and he took off. Just on his box score of rush attempts – it doesn’t line up.

Maybe they don’t count pressure if a guy scrambles for a positive gain but that’s a flawed methodology then.

  12. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Yaya caused a good deal of havoc. No issue there. He will be fine and will get his 10 sacks if healthy imo.

Pressure is on the Lions. We can play loose and fast.

  13. unbelievable Says:

He was getting a bunch of pressure, some of which led directly to other guys getting sacks / TFLs.

Not worried just yet, but this week is going to be a much tougher test. Goff isn’t mobile, but he’s good against pressure and has a much better o-line protecting him, along with better weapons to throw too.

This will be a real good test of our run defense too.

  14. OR Buc Says:

Part of it was that Daniels is so mobile

  15. Buc Nutty Says:

He will be fine. Braswell looked good as well. Both have heavy hands.
Strong boys. Look out once they start clicking with Cancey & Vea.

  16. JustVisiting Says:

“Porcelain doll”? Seriously?! I’d like to see you go two rounds with this guy. Heck, I’d like to see you go 20 seconds.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Lord C … ‘Maybe they don’t count pressure if a guy scrambles for a positive gain but that’s a flawed methodology then.’

I agree with you 100%; their methodology basically can’t account for mobile QBs. Pressures according to PFR represent the total of sacks, QB knockdowns & hurries. If a mobile QB is being chased by a 270 lb DE/OLB like Diaby, I’d bet that he’s hurrying.

  18. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

I’m thinking Ya-ya will have a great week as far as stats are concerned. I’m seeing LVD having an even better game. Double digit tackles and at least one int. Go Bucs!!

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Lord C … ‘Jayden Daniels had 16 rush attempts and only a few of those in the red zone were designed runs.’

BTW talking about Red Zone rushes, the Commanders had 3 Red Zone intrusions Sunday … and scored TDs on all 3 of them for 100% Red Zone TD Percentage. And they scored all 3 by running the ball. Just 1 game I know, but the Bucs now rank #21 in Run Defense (Rushing Yards Allowed) and #32 in Rushing TDs Allowed. Me thinks that Todd Bowles is VERY unhappy right now, since stopping the run is Job 1 to him.

  20. Booger Says:

Yeah, I noticed and said to myself during the 4th Quarter, that I don’t believe I’ve heard Yaya or Junior’s names even ONCE, ruing this entire game… Then, he got in there around that one sack I think, & after that I at least saw Junior runnin’ around there in the endzone. Awfully ‘quiet’ game for both of them. And, I had no clue about the Kancey injury until after the game & had wondered where TF he was, too… They mostly, only give the ‘injury report’ (90-minutes before kickoff) for offensive players on “Fantasy Now,” & that’s the only morning pregame show I watch leading up to the game as I’m filling-out all of my DFS Entries/Rosters.

  21. JimBobBuc Says:

YaYa isn’t as effective off the left side where he got a lot of snaps this game. JTS flashed from the right side, so let’s see if he will take a very unlikely step forward this year. I’d like to see YaYa on the right and Brass on the left.

  22. SlyPirate Says:

    YOU’RE A TWISTED BUNCH …

Yaya “played hard” and didn’t record a single stat. No tackles, sacks, just zeros.
Joe and His Tribe: “WE LOVE YOU YAYA!!!!”

JTS “loafed” his way to 1 TFL, 1 Sack, 1 Forced Fumble.
Joe and His Tribe: “Cut him the Bum! JTS SUCKS!!!”

Is it always “Backwards Day” at JoeBucsFan.com?

  23. SenileSenior Says:

    Ha ha, SlyPirate.

I certainly hope that JTS has finally arrived and will play consistently well this season. Yaya will be excellent I am sure.

We need them this week. “All hands on deck!”

    Go Bucs!!

  24. ATLBuc Says:

I saw YaYa chasing the QB and if it were anybody but McDaniels or Lamar Jackson he would have had two sacks

JTS is on pace to get 17 sacks this year.

  26. Capt.Tim Says:

JTS may have some stats this season.
    It’s his contract year.
    Rip Van Winkel has risen.
Let him sign a new contract, and he’ll go back to sleep.
Typical strategy for many NFL players

  27. heyjude Says:

If Todd is good to go with Yaya, I am all in too. He is playing hard. Go Yaya!

    The Lions can be beaten.
