The Bucs Really Miss Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey

September 23rd, 2024

“Boy, I say boy, y’all ever hear of a sack — pay attention to me son when I’m talking to ya’!”

The chickens came home to roost yesterday at The Licht House. And man, did they leave plenty of droppings.

How feeble was the Bucs’ interior pass rush? Well, Joe’s seen grandmas in nursing homes that may have been able to get the same results. Consider this little gem from yesterday’s shatfest on Dale Mabry Highway that Next Gen Stats dug up by way of NFL.com.

The interior of the Broncos’ offensive line — Ben Powers, Quinn Meinerz and Luke Wattenberg — did not allow a single pressure against the Buccaneers’ pass rush.

What makes matters even worse is the Broncos started a right tackle — his very first NFL start!  — who was an undrafted free agent. And this guy stonewalled Bucs edge rushers, or at least slowed them enough to make them virtually ineffective.

In Bucs defensive meetings this week, guys on the defensive lines need to be shamed with this information.

If they have any self-worth or heart, they ought to be breathing fire next week when the Eagles come to town.

It’s obvious now, any kind of QB with legs is going to smash on us when we are depleted on the defensive line. A guy like Goff who can’t move, it’s not the biggest deal. Someone like Bo Nix who can scramble and pick up first downs himself, yeah that’s what they are going to do, and do it with ease

  2. DS Says:

I’ll say it again Licht took his foot off the gas and rested on the laurels of winning a playoff game last yr when everyone knew we needed an edge rusher. Sorry but there is a reason watts and Ramirez are bubble guys

  3. Tbbucs3 Says:

Greg Gaines and Logan Hall are utterly useless

  4. Citrus County Says:

    Nice work Joe, very creative.

  5. Bucsfan Says:

Ndamakong Suh is available and don’t even try to tell me he would not be better…………

Bucs are going to have trouble containing Hurts and Barkley next week even if Vea is back. I am not counting on Kancey being available but hopefully I am wrong. Being down the best D player, Antoine Winfield, also blows….. The fact that the Bucs acknowledged that they were not “hungry” yesterday is telling too. It is nice that they said that but is anyone going to be held accountable? Bowles is so low key, its hard to imagine him berating the team as a hole but perhaps it is what the team needs. The Raiders looked about as inept as the Bucs did (though the Raiders did get garbage points) but their HC basically told the team that there would be changes, a lot of them as his team did not come to play, just like the Bucs. The fact that the Bucs seem to have approached Sunday’s game exactly as the Raiders did, underestimate a bad opponent and play like garbage is really disappointing as the Raiders are likely a 4 or 5 win team. Are the Bucs? Probably not but hey sure looked like it yesterday. Somewhere Coach Jim Mora is yelling “Playoffs?!?!?!?!”….

  7. Kenton Smith Says:

I thought the OLine would be breathing fire yesterday the way they were berated last week. Instead they were barely breathing.

  8. BucU Says:

This entire team is Charmin soft.

  9. Dave Pear Says:

The Bucs really miss BA. We need a real head coach, one who takes responsibility for the whole team’s performance. Todd seemed surprised by the offensive game plan, ME13’s under-use, Bucky’s under-use.

Earth to Todd – as head coach, it might be important to review and provide input into the game plan before the game. Like a head coach does.

Also, the head coach needs to sit his DC down and tell him the truth that the bend over and break style of defense is a losing way to play defense.

Eagles are gonna smear Todd like a stool sample.

  10. Lol Says:

Yikes. Randy Gregory had as many pressures as the entire team and he was smoking on his couch. LOL

  11. gofortheface30 Says:

A little louder for all the momos that said we would roll Denver without them. What, I thought we didnt need our star players? All good take all the time you need guys, dont come back till week 8! Only 17 games per year, key guys that chronically miss 4ish games per year matters. Injuries matter. On top of that, the OVERCONFIDENCE that the team had as if we’re the 93 Cowboys is laughable. We arent anywhere near talented enough to thin we can just show up and expect teams to fold. Both our lines are SOFT. I cant think of a game where an ass kicking was more deserving than this.

  12. Bucshot Says:

Next man up… just like in H.S. and college football.

  13. Foghorn Leghorn Says:

Boy, I said boy, that nice lookin fellow in that photograph looks awful familiar. Now I , I say, now I know some youngins gettin lots of money down in the NCAA for showin faces. I reckon I’ll find that handsome rooster and let him know… say…wait a cotton pickin minute! What gives Joe?!?

  14. Lakeland Says:

The only fans suffering from a let down are the fans that thought the Bucs were gonna steam roll this team by 30 points.

    What they don’t realize is:
This is the NFL…..Any Given Sunday

  15. JA Says:

Mayfield aside, Bowles is not a good head coach. How can you be the emotional leader of a team that plays in a highly emotional sport and show no emotion whatsoever.? Okay, that’s “him,” Bowles’ statuesque demeanor with the personality of a stone or brick. I get it. But I don’t like it.
He comes across as someone who is either lost or doesn’t care. You pick!
Back to Bowles/Mayfield. The game was over shortly after the fourth quarter. Whether you love or despise Baker, he shouldn’t have played after the game was out of reach. A head coach with a clue would’ve inserted Trask to get him some reps. Instead, Bowles would rather insert Trask, after an injury to Mayfield, with next to zero experience in an NFL game.
Bowles coaching patterns make no sense on any logical level. None, zilch, zero!!

  16. JA Says:

After the fourth quarter began … sorry.

  17. OrlandoBucFan Says:

Claiming to not be hungry is a cop out. The Bucs are not good enough to coast. The truth is they got out played, out hustled, and, most importantly, out coached. The Broncos played the short game and set Nix up for success. We played our usual run it up the middle non sense to set up the pass and that was predictable. So now we have two back to back lackluster offensive performances. How many do we need to declare a trend?

  18. Hearty Dikerson Says:

So the Broncos interior line, consisting of 3rd, 4th and 5th round draft picks didn’t give up a single pressure. And an undrafted RT playing his first game that looked good.

Bucs have 1st and 2nd round interior linemen, and a swing tackle that has no business being the NFL.

Yet this site continually touts ‘ring of honor’ Jason Licht as the best o-line talent evaluator in the league. Weird.

  19. Darin Says:

They definitely miss Warren Sapp too. How about coaching up the guys you have and getting em ready coach!?!?!

  20. Bobby Says:

I just read sn article talking about Hassan Reddick possibly being traded soon. Oh please please please Jason Licht go get Hasson Reddick. Bet the Jets would take a 4th or even 5th round pick for him. Totally worth it right now!! There wasn’t one qb pressure against the Broncos, not one! Go get Reddick!

  21. Waterboy Says:

Kancey is starting to seem like one of those hot tub warriors that you speak of @Joe.

  22. Bobby Says:

Hasson Reddick trade, JPP is a free agent right now. Heck Baltimore just added a pass rusher via free agency today. I don’t understand the Bucs management and there hesitation to sign add more than enough pass rushers to this roster.
