Teams Are Taking Mike Evans Out

September 22nd, 2024

Rut or small sample size?

Maybe for the first time in his 11-year career, teams have figured out how to take out Mike Evans.

Of course, it is a small sample size, but the past three games Evans has been just about a non-factor, save for his touchdown catches against the Commandos.

Evans had 61 yards receiving in Week 1. In Week 2, 42 yards. Today, Evans had 17, his lowest single-tame total since the win over the Dixie Chicks in Atlanta last season.

Last week at Detroit, the Lions didn’t allow Evans to burn them the way he did last season in the playoffs. He had just three catches for those 42 yards.

If Joe didn’t know better, Joe would swear Broncos coach Sean Payton may have learned a thing or two during his time with the slimy Saints how to lock up Evans?

If Evans was, say, in his 20s, Joe would chalk up the past two games to a good defense and a good coach a week later. But Evans in his early 30s, that’s when Father Time is beginning to slap receivers in the face.

    Palmer who ????

  2. WiseCrack Says:

Nah, Baker has taken him out. Throwing balls into no mans land in his direction with double coverage does not mean Mike is not getting open

  3. Rod Munch Says:

You need your QB to actually throw him the ball and have more than 90 yards passing going into the 4th quarter.

Hopefully once Luke is back, the line play won’t be so terrible, and Baker isn’t out there thinking he’s Michael Vick and actually throws the ball on 4th and 3 instead of rushing for 5 inches.

  4. WiseCrack Says:

Joe isn’t making crap up! Is Mike Evans not 31? Go look at this history of 31-year old receivers in the NFL. And no, outliers are not the norm.

Good way to get run from this site is to claim Joe is making things up. Joe doesn’t know if Evans is getting too old not. That doesn’t mean Joe cannot wonder if that is the case or not. — Joe

  5. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Bring in Trask this all changes.

  6. Lakeland Says:

Mike Evans isn’t the only WR they have

How many times was Jalen McMillan target?
    Trey Palmer?
    Sterling Shepard?

They have more WRs than Godwin and Evans

  7. Rod Munch Says:

It’s worth noting that the Broncos have the highest paid corner in the NFL in Patrick Surtain. There’s a reason they had Godwin run that endzone play instead of Evans. There’s no reason to force the ball when you have a much easier option.

With that said, Baker was terrible today, so everyone had a bad day because of it.

  8. RagingBrisket Says:

Evans was responsible for that interception. Mayfield put it up there and if Evans fights to catch the ball he probably comes down with it or incomplete at worst. But no, Evans gives up on the play and the db gets an easy int. Garbage effort

  9. El HEFE Rick Says:

SMH today was ridiculous I turned off my tv off after 3rd quarter Britt is slow our interior defense line needs to get healthy dean is looking to get traded soon skule isn’t cutting it and idk if I’m trippen but looked like Tristan was being abused a lil to RW1 is being used like last year while Bucky is telling y’all feed me plz idk 88 started getting heated up then fumble it happens to the best but damn I hope everyone is healthy going into next week because this game was just disappointing was there practice this week like actually hitting and film study or did they just not want it today

  10. Oz Len Says:

Oh darn I would have never thought Rod Munch would be the one to bring the baker dirt today.

  11. Woodenman Says:

The only good thing about this game is we didn’t lose another player to injury. I think?

  12. A Bucs Fan Says:

Mike was open! Baker didn’t throw the ball after his early mistake! He got shy.

  13. Bucsfan81 Says:

First year that Mike might not get his 1,000 yard season.

  14. Simeon4HOF Says:

Seriously doubt he does. Something’s wrong with the Bucs, and it’s not the talent, apart from soft azz dean

  15. Alstott40 Says:

    RagingBrisket
That interception was totally on Mayfield, go back and re watch. Evans was double teamed and it was a bad pass to begin with. All around poor effort on the entire team, only guys who showed up was Godwin,Bucky and Zyon

  16. RagingBrisket Says:

Alstott40- no sir, you are wrong. Like I said, if Evans goes up for the ball he probably comes down with it. He didn’t even try. Mayfield is always trying to give him jump balls because that is what Evans is great at. Evans wears that turnover 100%

  17. WiseCrack Says:

Ummm, I never said you made anything up. Just that you are doing Shock Value articles.

If your gonna lie about what I said and run me. Do you bro

  18. Darin Says:

Denver showed up to play. Bucs went thru the motions. Never a chance. On to the next one

  19. TF Says:

No it’s has nothing to do with the Broncos. It’s Godwin moving back to the slot and the new offense. It’s up to Coen to involve him more.

  20. DoooshLaRue Says:

We should have paid ME more money.

    “Pay the Man!” they screamed.

  21. TF Says:

And I kinda don’t agree with the “early 30s” Father Time thing. Is that based on a sample size of ALL early 30s WRs production? He should be compared to “HOF” WRs ONLY. It’s more accurate comparison.

  22. Alstott40 Says:

    RagingBrisket
Nah you’re completely wrong about that play, Mayfield should have not forced that throw it was on him. We all know Evans is a contested catch machine but that one was never gonna happen due to coverage and a bad pass. Again the whole team stunk today

  23. Trask To The Future Says:

No one is taking Mike Evans out of games.

A great route runner (let alone future HOFer) also has an edge of a great corner because he knows the route he is running. BUT… if the QB isn’t placing the ball to the anticipated route point where only the WR has the best shot at catching it, then that WR isn’t going to make many catches. The 50/50 jump balls aren’t going to cut it.

Face it… Mayfield isn’t getting the ball out fast enough and is potentially having a hard time seeing over the O-Line. He’s not throwing the ball over the middle — over the top of his new 6’5.5″ center (a guy taller than Hainsey).

  24. unbelievable Says:

Evans was wide open multiple times today.

Baker couldn’t see him. Instead he just held the ball and took sacks.

  25. Dave Pear Says:

Congrats, Todd. Today is a prime example why the Bucs get disrespected like Bucs do. Today was the chance to correct the narrative. All the players are saying they weren’t as hungry as their opponent.

    Pitiful, Todd. On you.

And Todd deserves it. Head coach? Naa. Defensive Coordinator? Name a DC who allows horrible rookie QBs to look more like Josh Allen than Josh Groban. Maybe Todd could make Josh Groban into a stud NFL QB by playing against him.

It’s a long season, and this has the chance to seem like a 24 month season than a 5 month season.

  26. RagingBrisket Says:

Alstott40- if Evans jumps up and comes down with the ball everyone would be praising him and no one would be saying it was a bad pass. Evans gave up and hung his QB out to dry. Screw that sht.
    You are wrong.

  27. Bucs4Ever Says:

    Father time enters the chat

  28. BradyGronk Fan Says:

Evans is not a HOF lock. He needs to create daylight between himself and Hopkins/DEvante Adams. He needs yardage close to Julio Jones. Lastly, he has to keep that 1,000 yard streak going. If he is getting 3 to 5 passes a game, he is a WR2. He can kiss his 1000 yard streak, Probowl chances, HOF goodbye if this continues.

  29. El HEFE Rick Says:

Honestly our defense was trash today bo nix broke Nelson off something fierce twice Britt 2 also whitehead once Dennis I think he didn’t know if someone had his back to rush nix on a play because a receiver ran past him a sec before and the tackling today beside zyon and David idk just not our game

  30. Boss Says:

Cause the old man should have been traded. I said and said it.

He ain’t that good. Just a straight line….

  31. Jeff Says:

Mike is fighting out there. Throw the ball up to him on 50/50 passes and you’ll get catches or pass interference. Teams know taking #13 out of the game is key. Got to get more creative and evans will produce

    —————

No…you are wrong. I just went back and forth with the clip of the pick and it showed Mike was running to where the ball would be and started to leap up, but his momentum was taking him toward the sideline while the safety jumped up in front and picked it off. Evans has zero shot at that pass as it was high and he was trying to get to where it would be near the sidelines. It was a bad pass…period.

  33. Alstott40 Says:

    RagingBrisket
Evans didn’t jump because it was thrown right to the second man defending him and he also got pushed from the other corner, I watched the game and I know a bad throw when I see it. Completely on Mayfield whether you think so or not. Don’t matter though we would have lost the game if he wouldn’t have thrown that bad pass or not. Period

  34. Alstott40 Says:

    Falconrap
Thank you at least that makes two of us knowing a bad throw when we see it

  35. Alstott40 Says:

    Boss
Once again showing how moronic you are always saying evans isn’t good. You’re a joke, he’s a future hall of fame player and it’s a lock. You really don’t watch the games much, being your takes is hot garbage

  36. Falconrap Says:

The other thing I noticed is that Evans was in position on a number of plays where Baker could have thrown him open, but didn’t. It’s frustrating, and it’s the same issues we saw last season. It’s why I said what I said about him then. He started the season looking like he may finally be the guy, but then goes out and has a game like this. What’s worse is that this offense supposedly allows the QB to check out of the current play and go to a different one based on the defense, yet we had a penchant for running up the gut against obvious run defense formations. Repeatedly. Hopefully, he improves, but it looks a lot like last year so far, just a generally more creative offense at times. Sigh.

  37. Bucs4Ever Says:

Mike is NOT a lock right now for the HOF.

He needs at minimum 2 more 1k seasons.

He isn’t getting in if he falls off a cliff.

  38. Alstott40 Says:

    Bucs4Ever
He does not need two more 1k yard seasons to be a lock. Hes certainly not falling off a cliff either. SMH you guys can watch him go into Canton soon when he retires just watch and see. He will get a 1k this year but keep on that same energy when he pops off next game

  39. CJBucsFan Says:

For the absolute idiots on here. Mike is IN, 100% period.

  40. Alstott40 Says:

    CJBucsFan
You darn right he is. These guys on here always rag on Evans when he don’t have a great game smh. It’s crazy that they blame Evans who’s the most consistent player we have ever had, it’s embarrassing really. Dudes gonna go to work and bounce back though so I’m not worried. That’s just what hall of famers do they put in the work and greatness happens, just like it has since we drafted him back in 2014

  41. Rod Munch Says:

Again, Surtain is probably the 2nd best corner in football right now. Doesn’t mean Evans still can’t get yards, but you should take the easier match-up when you have Godwin as your #2 WR. But Baker was Checkdown Charlie today, right from the first series, and when Bad Baker shows-up everyone suffers. Baker had 58 yards at the half, and was on that pace until Denver went to a prevent at the end, which is the only reason Bakers numbers aren’t worse than they were.

  42. Alstott40 Says:

    Rod Munch
Yes Baker had a bad game for sure but really this is a team effort, and no effort was really on display today. Falls back on the head coach really, Todd should have these guys ready to go every week. Also should be able to score more than 7 points, just all around terrible team play. We will bounce back though and win this division Go Bucs

  43. Bucs4Ever Says:

When the gooobers fall back on insults you know you won the argument.

    SMDH.

  44. Monty Says:

Evans (butter fingers) was open at times, and again dropped a pass,, pay reductions& fines for bad play by players and bad play calling for coaches.mayfield(not so dangerous)today displayed his typical nervous, scared scatter brain & feetwork. A great Q.B knows when to throw& run foward! In the nfl 3 seconds in the pocket to throw,if that.Ervin needed more carries instead of baker.ervin reminds me of barry sanders, get the ball to him.overall the bucs played like a Mac college division team. Horrible defense and offensive, special teams. Next week play at 110% killer instinct. Coaches too!

  45. Rod Munch Says:

Alstott40 – The offensive line is a mess right now, mainly because Luke is out I think – and I’m going to guess they were trying to get Sucke some extra help today and it was playing havoc on everything. I’ll have to watch the ALL22 if I can stomach it, and see if that was the case, or, much more concerning, they were just flat out getting beat.

But there were plenty of plays were Baker did have time, and just held the ball forever. When he turns the ball over, he seems to go into a shell and gets afraid to try to make plays, and we saw that today.

  46. Alstott40 Says:

    Rod Munch
Yes the oline is a mess but with Luke back it certainly gets better. I’m concerned about Mauch, he’s getting beat every week and consistently, maybe put Klein in if it continues next week. I think we will bounce back though

  47. FloridaMan Says:

Damn I miss the no risk it, no biscuit days. Mike is an awkward target you just gotta let it rip.

  48. Swampy Says:

I knew we were in trouble when the defense was introduced pre-game. Best safety and close to interior DL in the league out. With a couple of exceptions the defense was pre-season game quality talent.

  49. Simeon4HOF Says:

Evans not declining just yet. Team was in total chaos today from the 1st play on. And Teams are paying alot of attention to him thus far in coverage this year, able to even Xtra when they know White can’t run 3 times for a 1st down 97% of the time

  50. BradyGronk Fan Says:

If Mike Evans only averages 4 or 5 targets a game. He’s not getting his 1000 yards. The QB and OC is essentially saying Mike is declining and he is not one, not two, but the third option. Maybe Mike should have moved on after all.

  51. Dave Pear Says:

So, Jason needs to secretly mandate to Todd that BA will assist with game planing from here on. And how to do the head coaching thing.

And hire a full time DC. And remember – winning more is kind of a job security thing.

  52. TampabayDJ Says:

If they can’t protect the QB , the QB can’t make the throws ! 12 sacks the last 2 games , and only allowed 22 all of last year

  53. unbelievable Says:

RagingBrisket dead wrong on this one.

The ball was thrown way behind Evans to the other team. That pass needs to go towards the sideline. Baker had a bunch of terrible throws today. Happy feet all day b.c the o-line was getting abused. So then even when protection held up, he just held the ball and held the ball and then tried to run and take a sack or dump it off for minimal gain.

Maybe there was a reason the team wasn’t so relaxed under Brady, cuz he forced them to actually be on top of their ish and be prepared. But hey, I’m so glad everyone loves Baker so much.

They can all sing Kumbaya while watching the playoffs from the couch.

  54. Matt k Says:

In 2 weeks bucky will be the primary ball carrier. Carries are slowly shifting his way. Regarding Mike his biggest issue is any catch he makes of 15 yards or more a good portion of the time the next play he is winded on the sideline.
