Rondé Barber: Jayden Daniels Won’t Be “Processing Right, Not Fast Enough”

September 6th, 2024

So what does everyone’s favorite Hall of Fame cornerback think of rookie QB Jayden Daniels facing the Bucs on Sunday at The Licht House?

Of course, Joe is referring to iconic Rondé Barber. He was a guest on WJFK-FM in Washington D.C. today and sounded like would have drooled over a shot to face Daniels.

“You just know that [rookie quarterbacks] are not processing right, not fast enough,” Barber said. “And I always used to try to use that to my advantage — that they were more than likely to be one-read guys. And I think Jayden’s got a little bit of that in him anyway. One read, start to move, use your athleticism.”

Barber continued with his attack plan as a corner facing a rookie QB.

“So for me, if I can get a sense of, you know, the timing of their routes … then you knew you could take advantage of it,” Barber said. “So I used to do that a lot. I used to spend most of my time with young quarterbacks just trying to find out what they were really good at, or at least what they thought they were really good at. And that’s where I was going to take my shots with them. And I think coordinators on defense think the same thing. Like you know [their game] is limited, even if it’s the best rookie quarterback in league history, they’re not going to have the game knowledge to go out and execute the entire playbook.”

So how will the Bucs approach the super-athletic Daniels, who is a true dual-threat quarterback?

Barber said Tampa Bay’s gameplanning for Daniels has been nearly all about preparing for the unexpected.

Athleticism can be the great equalizer, Barber said, “and this guy has it in spades, man.”

If I had a nickel for everytime a rookie qb torched Todd Bowles defense, I’d have like, what? 4 nickels? Rookie QBs scare me with this team.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

You know what you do when you have a rookie who is slow at processing the game … you sit back in a super soft zone and give him plenty of time to figure things out.

I really really really hope that is not what we see, but that is what Todd Bowles generally does. It’s like he lives off his rep he got under Bruce Arians for all these exotic blitzes, something we have very rarely seen since Arians retired.

In any case I hope Todd surprises us, comes out aggressive, and no, ‘blitzing’ 5 when they get zero pressure is not aggressive.

Also, I hope Bowles knows what he is doing with Britt and the guy proves me wrong – but this isn’t White out there spying a running quarterback, where White could case down anyone sideline to sideline. Britt will get easily beat to the edge if he’s put in one-on-one situations. I’m not sure what the plan is, but I hope there is one.

  3. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Historically, Tampa Has struggled against rookie QBs, doesn’t matter who the coach is.

  4. #99 the big fella Says:

How did that work out with C J Stroud last season?

  5. Buc4evr Says:

The guy can run , scares me what he can do with broken plays. Winfield better be a spy. Bucs always get killed by backups and rookies. This game is a trap.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Buc4evr – Not a bad idea to spy with Winfield, although I’ve be fine if Whitehead played the role as well. Perhaps play a base 3-3-5.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

For as good as last night’s NFL game was, this Packers / Eagles game is some bad football so far. I guess that’s what you expect in week 1 when the game is in a different hemisphere.

  8. Pete Says:

Monte Kiffin’s defenses preyed in rookie quarterbacks.

  9. Bojim Says:

Stroud pretty much had his way with us.

  10. Zeke B Says:

Rookie qbs have killed the bucs. Look back to Marcus Mariota (out this week) versus Jaimes winston. How about Brock Purdy verses tom brady? Those were players in their 1st games no less.

  11. Nobody Special Says:

Daniels doesn’t have much body mass on him. Looks downright skinny. I think he wears down from the hits of big linemen and will have trouble staying healthy.

  12. ReeeBarrr Says:

Maybe we just blitz on nearly every passing down

    Gooooooooooooo BUCS!!!!!!!!

  13. Joe Says:

Rookie qbs have killed the bucs. Look back to Marcus Mariota (out this week) versus Jaimes winston. How about Brock Purdy verses tom brady?

And then there was Daniel Jones.

To be fair, Purdy lit up a lot of teams, not just the Bucs. The Mariota thing, that was fully on Lovie.

  14. Dave Pear Says:

Ronde’ — put on #20 and suit up! If Todd had you on staff, I bet zone bust wouldn’t be such a common occurrence.

  15. Lefty Says:

    4 Words..Charlie Batch Detroit Lions

  16. Mchammer Says:

Someone should remind Ronde that this team specializes in making rookie and back up QBs look like All Pros…

  17. Dave Pear Says:

Mchammer – the one needing the reminder is Todd.

  18. Bakersbucs says Says:

Blah blah blah u people suck u r just negative rag on u r wife morons I tell u

  19. Rod Munch Says:

Time to add our Packers rookie quarterback to the regular roster and then extort a pick from Green Bay if they want them.

  20. Shane Callahan Says:

Y’all are scaring me. Sure hope the Bucs offense scores a lot of points.

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Pete

Kiffins defense had real football players.

And they were allowed to hit.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

“ Sure hope the Bucs offense scores a lot of points.”

We hope Todd hopes that, too.

  23. PbnJ Says:

It’s not lost on me that the Bucs still have the lowest winning percentage in NFL history. We’ve struggled against every niche anyone can list, in all likelihood. Rookie QBs, veteran QBs, slow QBs, fast QBs, tall QBs, short QBs, fat QBs, red head QBs, and even girly QBs, all have plundered our Pirates in our 48 seasons. Guessing on the last one, counting only Chrissy Everett in that category. Not because I’ve ever liked Jim Rome, but because it’s still laugh out loud hilarious that Everett attacked him on a live broadcast. Too young to remember that? Look it up, you’ll be amazed.

That said, I’m still in a celebratory mood from the 2022 Bills game, OT victory, that saw that percentage improve to over the 40% mark.

  24. heyjude Says:

This is very different from C.J. last season and other QBs in the past. Yes, we have made some other rookie QBs look really good, but it all has been because of a variety of circumstances at that time. Their team, our team. Their coaches, our coaches.

Jayden did it all in college football including a lot of running. However, he may be more of a pocket QB then a runner. Unsure yet. I think the Bucs have figured it out by looking at his college tapes. Not much more out there to watch. Confident the Bucs are ready for him and the team. Go Bucs!

  25. bucnjim Says:

Stack the box and force him to throw the ball. If you’re going to let him run free they will keep this game very close and control the clock. Score early; take the ball away; score again and call it a day.

  26. D-Rok Says:

From all that I’ve read from Ronde and others, Daniels struggles with his progressions. One read and run is his M.O. to date. I’ll bet he’ll be looking for McLaurin and often. Double McLaurin and spy Daniels, and we’ll be OK.

  27. Dave Pear Says:

D-Rok, I sure hope that’s what they do. Keep our guys focused and unconfused.

  28. heyjude Says:

Agreed, D-Rok. McLaurin will be his main guy.
