MVP Start For Baker Mayfield

September 8th, 2024

“We’re damn good, Mike.”

How bout that Bucs quarterback!

He was dominant today.

Baker Mayfield had a brutal run game and a leaky offensive line the first half of today’s glorious season beatdown of the Commandos 37-20. What did Mayfield do? He kicked ass in that first half, going 16-for-19 for 174 yards and a touchdown, plus 2 scrambles for 10 yards.

Mayfield showed his mobility, escapability and creativity, and his decisions were rather sound. His one near interception in the first half was more difficult for the defender than it looked.

Mayfield got a running game to help him in the second half — Bucky! Bucky! Bucky! — and finished the day with 4 touchdown passes. He was 24-for-30 for 289 yards. It was his best regular-season game since dropping 4 TDs on the Packers back in December

It sure didn’t look to Joe like Mayfield was adjusting to a brand new offense (though Joe can’t say the same for receiver Trey Palmer). In fact, the Bucs scored on their first five possessions. They hadn’t done that since January of 2021 against the Falcons, per Scott Smith of the team website.

If Mayfield can continue playing like this, he should shut up a lot of his doubters and lead the Bucs to a fourth straight NFC South crown.

Fun fact: Including playoffs, over Mayfield’s last eight games, he’s got 20 touchdown throws and 4 interceptions.

    Different team with Kancey playing

  2. MadMax Says:

GOOD JOB BUNCH OF NOTHING SCRUBS….BAKER? NOTHING TO SEE HERE!

  3. Austin Says:

Team ROCKED, very happy with it. Especially Coen

  4. Hearty Dikerson Says:

I’ve been a longtime Baker doubter but loved what I saw today. If he can keep this up ill happily my eat my dish of crow

  5. Mr_Barf Says:

And the OLine & DLine have a lot of upsIde potential

  6. Rod Munch Says:

The Redskins are a very bad defense.

Thankfully the Lions were a very bad pass defense last year. So hopefully Baker can do it again, if he can, the Bucs will win. But that’s a very high bar, I won’t freak out if he falls back to earth. Last year Bakers biggest, by far, was consistency.

  7. Cometowin2 Says:

Great play from Mayfield, Evans and Godwin!

  8. Hodad Says:

Meanwhile the media darling Cousins looked like a 36 year old QB coming off an injury. Denny Green once said, you want to crown their arse do it, but we know who they are, the same old Birds.

  9. geno711 Says:

Someone on the last preseason game was gripping about the Bucs not playing their offensive starters for more than a series. I guess that did not matter.

  10. Miller5252 Says:

Hell of a game for Baker, Evans, Godwin and Buckey! They need to get rid of dumb penalizes and get on the same page. If they can do that…. Look out! They’ve got a lot of good things to build on! Let’s go put up 40 on the lions!! Go Bucs!!

  11. Capt.Tim Says:

Bet the Browns miss him! Lmao
Mayfield deserved to be the top pick in the draft. He is an incredible QB.
    We got sooo lucky

  12. BucsGuy Says:

Trask would have had 5 touchdowns! (Sarcasm)

  13. HC Grover Says:

New OC rocks. 1000 percent better than Canaless.

  14. Durango 95 Says:

    Dude is nails.

  15. Gofortheface30 Says:

20 touch downs and 4 interceptions? Nah, Kyle Trask should be starting pal. Kyle trask would have thrown for 700 yards and 7 touchdowns

  16. Chef Baker Says:

Baker baked today ! Good job my boy!!!!

  17. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

Mayfield completed 80% of his passes and 4 TDs yet I can already hear the whiners complaining. Whether the Commanders are good or not, that doesn’t change the fact that a QB’s accuracy at 80 freakin’ percent is great against anyone.

I wasn’t able to watch it but got the play by play on ESPNs website. A win is a win. Ask Canales how he feels after today. Lol

  18. Trask To The Future Says:

I gotta give credit where credit is due… Mayfield played AMAZING today. Great job!

Let’s hope this season he can be consistent week to week, though. He won’t always play lights out but he can’t disappear in games like last season.

The big question is… how much of this production was because Washington’s pass defense was LAST in the NFL last season? Or was Washington improved and Mayfield still destroyed them?

Next week should be a better test.

  19. D-Rok Says:

    Impressive game!!

  20. Permanently Moderated Says:

    Mayfield was a stud today.

  21. geno711 Says:

It’s early, but I thought the play calling was maybe even better than the execution by the players. Hoping that Coen is the real deal.

  22. Gofortheface30 Says:

Gator fans, Kyle tracks fans. You need to use that suckhole of yours to be pleasing your boyfriend tonight instead of talking. Baker is the guy, so go sit in the corner and shut your filthy mouth

  23. Winny Testaverde Says:

Leave it to Hot Rod to bring a wet blanket to a victory bonfire. Worries about YPC ( multiple negative runs can and will be cleaned up ) and other team’s so called deficiencies. Your toy poodles must get kicked early & often.

  24. infomeplease Says:

Rod , you are mistaken about the Commanders D. They have a pro bowler at every level.

  25. firethecannons Says:

manolive, that was an excellent game! Baker, Mikey, Godwin and Jalen Mcmillan all very good! Bucky gonna be a STARRR!!!!!! Defense good too!

  26. Gofortheface30 Says:

Trask to the future CLOWN, the Bucs were a cun—t hair away from the NFC. Championship game on, something your guy would never accomplish in ten thousand years. I do not value your opinion

  27. Bakerfan Says:

Hey you experts please define what a Mayfield regression is. Was that one today?

  28. firethecannons Says:

Yup! Baker was damn good, sometimes he gets free from sacks and not sure how he does it–he really can scramble welll

  29. Ed Kerber Says:

    Two good things happened today.

The Bucs won by more than a Touchdown and there were still many mistakes.

There were enough mistakes to keep the team humble. if they can fix mistakes and beat Lions, the sky is the limit.

  30. Mike S Says:

Perfectly executed Baker Mayfield offensive game plan.

    Stay committed to the run.
Short 3 step drop passing game.
Ball comes out quick with mustard on it.
Maintain possession and control the clock.
Utilize screen game to slow pass rush.
Get the ball into the hands of Bucs’ playmakers.
Draw the defense up and hit over the top when they get too agressive underneath.
Godwin breaks a screen or hauls a pass in at the sticks when they need a clutch 1st down.
Evans catches everything in his zip code – especially in the end zone – and catches multiple TDs.

This is EXACTLY how they drew it up.

When it works – this is what it’s supposed to look like.

  31. Buddha Says:

Boy do we miss Canales. One year as a mediocre OC and he’s a head coach. Car ok Lina’s problem now

  32. Bojim Says:

Why are some people throwing shade at Trask? We get it. Y’all don’t like him. He’s a backup. Shut up.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Rod , you are mistaken about the Commanders D. They have a pro bowler at every level.

    ——–

They were the #32 passing defense last year.

Also listening to Redskins sportstalk coming into this week they said their pass defense looked awful in the preseason, but they’re learning a new system, etc.

Anyways, not bashing the Bucs in the least, just keeping expectations a bit in check. Baker isn’t going to complete 80% of his passes and have 4 TDs every week, if he does, he’s going to have the best season in the history of the game.

  34. ATLBuc Says:

Everyone knows I’m a Trask Fan but I’m a Bucs fan first and Baker played amazing today. I can see what JL was talking about. He had a calmness about himself. He didn’t get rattled not once. He played under control and made good decisions all day. He even changed the play at the line a few times, successfully. Keep up the good work Baker!!!

  35. Gofortheface30 Says:

Idk Bakerfan but listen up and listen good. If Kyle Trask started he would have gone undefeated with 50 touchdowns and no picks ok. He isn’t starting because it’s a conspiracy. The gators haven’t been great in like 20 years but the league and Bucs coaches have it out for Gator quarterbacks, it’s not right!!!

  36. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

The Commanders were a team whose defense was supposedly upgraded and had a tough up the middle D with Wagner, Payne and Luvu. They were picked, unironically, but some experts to be a Darkhorse team that wins the NFC East. We were only 3.5 favorites against them at home.

With all that, we ROCKED them. The only blemish defensively was losing containment repeatedly against Daniels. That won’t fly when we play Lamar later this year. Offensively, they were tough up the middle, blowing us up repeatedly, but Baker picked them apart repeatedly and the team was amazing on screen blocks. Overall, the offense looked great. Great play design, Baker in full command.

37 was our season high last year, and we matched it first game despite leaving some points on the field. Great first game overall, exactly what I wanted to see. Bring on Detroit.

  37. SB~LV Says:

    Smooth operator!

  38. Mike S Says:

To add to what Rod Munch says – stay humble. This was a good win, but Washington is a rebuilding team with a rookie QB.

The schedule makers were kind to give the Bucs this cupcake on game 1 – almost like an extension of the preseason.

Next week ish gets real against the Lions. Watch the game tonight to see what they got going on. Bucs go to their house next week – it’s a tough assignment. That’s where the true measuring stick is.

  39. Beeej Says:

Deshaun Watson: 24 of 45 for 169 yards and 2 picks. Is Cleveland’s current GM the one who got rid of Baker?

  40. JK Says:

Been telling ya: Mayfield will be in the MVP talk this season
Hopefully any and allTrask talk has ended. Maybe someday, not now.

  41. Gofortheface30 Says:

Hi Bojim, pleased to meet you. Take your L and swallow it nice and good. I saw you screaming from the mountain tops for Trask, now shut your mouth. He will never see the field

  42. Rod Munch Says:

In fact, last year the Redskins were easily the worst defense in football, gave up over 30 points a game, gave up a 105 passer rating per game on average.

It’s not bashing anyone to point it out. It was a great performance, and next week Baker gets the Lions who were 27th in passing defense last year – but the Lions are almost certainly going to be better than last year.

So this was a great warm-up game, but let’s see what Baker does next week. Hopefully he can do it again, but I’d perhaps hold of on booking your Super Bowl hotel and airline tickets, or at least get something that is refundable – at least for another week. Or, better yet, go all-in, show you’re a true Baker Boi Believer and max out those credit cards. Seriously, you should, that would be an amazing story if you pull it off. Plus you’d of course bet big on the Bucs winning the SB as well, which will easily pay for the entire trip and tickets.

  43. MadMax Says:

@Capt Tim, thats why I said lets go after him Jason….then he did pretty good for 6 mill…then i said lets keep him, 33.333 for 3 years Jason…..and here we are….we got our QB in Baker, um for probably more than 3 years….just stating facts

  44. Joe in Michigan Says:

Of course, Rod Munch would say it was against horrible competition. 🙄

Great game by Mayfield, Evans, Godwin, it was against another NFL team, I don’t care who it was against.

  45. Gofortheface30 Says:

Ohhh Rod, I could buy 10 Super Bowl tickets and I wouldn’t max out my cred cards. What do you think I am, a Gator fan making 35k a year with a 1000 dollar credit limit? Do you think I vote for Kamala or something? Cmon man

  46. JustVisiting Says:

Like I’ve been saying: “regression” doesn’t apply. 🙂

  47. BakerTillIDie Says:

!st. Awesome win. Baker is gonna be in the mvp discussion. mcmill, your new frachise receiver. Evans/godwin, still exactly franchise rec. While, a baker fan, this is a team website. no need to get pissed, “your” player, sucked, or didnt play. Bucs won. And did you SEE how many sacks baker got out of?

  48. It’s Exciting!!!! Says:

    It’s Exciting!!!!!

  49. Rod Munch Says:

FUTURE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER OF THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE, BAKER MAYFIELD IS ON PACE FOR 5000 YARDS PASSING AND 64 TOUCHDOWNS AND ZERO INTERCEPTIONS – THE BEST SEASON IN THE HISTORY OF FOOTBALL!!! GET ON THE TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS BANDWAGON NOW BEFORE IT’S COMPLETELY FILLED UP AS WE MARCH TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!!

    #TEAMPOSITIVE!

  50. BakerTillIDie Says:

why hasnt rod been booted? lol @joebucsfan

  51. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

    @Joe in Michigan-

According to Rod, we can’t REALLY know if it was a good game for Baker until we see his QBR. Only the mighty ESPN stat-wizards and their magical tell-all can let us know if this was a good game for our QB! /s

  52. Baking with Coen Says:

Anybody knows how cousins did today?????????????

  53. BakerTillIDie Says:

all good rod, hope you enjoy your next (multiple) accounts. same person all. via haters. NICE WIN.

  54. infomeplease Says:

    Rod, Sarcasm Sarcasm.

  55. BakerTillIDie Says:

cousions looked like crap. lost, 3 or 4 interceptions i think

  56. Farmer Says:

Everyone talking about the Commanders pass defence being bad…did we watch the same game. They had tight coverage on almost every play, the ball was just in the perfect spot it needed to be. The right ball placement will beat elite coverage every single time and that’s what I saw.

  57. Gipper Says:

    MiddlingMunch,

Try to maintain what little is left of your dignity. You have ragged nonstop on Baker for a year and a half. You were told to cut the crap but you couldn’t help yourself. Maybe it would be best for you to join a bowling league. Leave pro football to those who know the game and talent.

  58. Mike S Says:

ATLBUC – I think if the Bucs went with Trask at the start of 2023 by now we would be seeing some great things out of him.

But they didn’t do that. They went with Baker instead and Baker played well today. Can’t start the season any better than what he did today. We can’t take that away from him.

It’s a good thing Bucs got Trask in case Baker goes down. Depth at the QB position is good.

I watched a good portion of both Pitt-Atl and NO-CAR games today.

The Atlanta OC is in over his head. They single blocked Watt all game and he wrecked their offense – ran through and by Falcons blocking all game. How can you not adjust and at least try to chip Watt? Cousins in the pistol is dumb. I watched in amazement. What are they doing? Also, they just didn’t get outcoached, they made stupid mistakes and got manhandled physically by the Steelers.

Pitt beat them with Fields at QB which they had no business of doing. There’s a reason why Tomlin wins games. He turned that game into a street fight where Watt played the role of the bully – and Atlanta didn’t adjust. They tried to get in the ditch with the Steelers which was a bad idea. The better coached, better motivated team won.

New Orleans OTOH looks EXPLOSIVE. That team is not finished yet. They will be a tougher out than Atlanta.

Trash Canales all you want – the Panthers have a depleted roster and Young is GARBAGE at QB. He’s undersized, not extremely quick or mobile, arm is average and he’s a one-read QB. How the heck did this guy go #1 overall? He’s shockingly bad.

Untalented roster + bust QB = very bad football team. Vince Lombardi couldn’t turn that team into a winner. They may not win a game this season.

  59. Ex-Browns02 Says:

While we’re basking in a nice opening win — please — no Trask-bashing here! Kyle is our QB2 and could be called upon any time. I’d be routing for him the same as our boy Baker! Go Bucs!!

  60. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Baker has always had consistency issues. I like to believe half his issues were due to Oline issues and run game issues. When he has time and sees he can have a great game. Today was a great game for him with 80% completion with 4 TDs. His price tag of $33 million a year is a steal when you see Cousins numbers. For the lovely price of $45 million a year he had 61.9% completion for 155 yards and 1 TD, 2 INT for a qbr of 29. Let’s hope Baker keeps it going consistently. If he does then top 10 qb with a good OLine and run game.

  61. HC Grover Says:

    Stainks will be the competition.

  62. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker Mayfield balled out today and I hope he keeps it up . You have to give him his credit today he played good. The way he played today gives me a lot of confidence in this team next week and that includes Baker Mayfield. I’m behind him 100 💯 percent.

  63. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

    @Farmer-

People trying to use last year’s stats ignore that this was almost a new defensse. Both starting Defensive ends, 2/3 starting Linebackers, 1 Starting Safety and 1 starting CB were all signed in the offseason, and Dan Quinn was the new head coach. And they weren’t scrubs, a lot of these guys were highly regarded. Armstrong, Luvu, Wagner, Davis, were all highly regarded FAs at their positions.

This was not the league worst defense from last year, and the only the usual haters are pretending it was.

  64. Trask To The Future Says:

Gofortheface30, relax. What’s with all the vulgar posts?

I said Baker had an amazing game but we all hope our team is the real deal and it wasn’t so much because Washington’s Defense was dead last in the NFL last year.

  65. Mike S Says:

Paratrooper Buc – TJ Watt was on Cousins every single drop back. That’s not an exaggeration. He was as dominant in that game as a edge rusher could be.

Be weary when the Bucs play that team. All I can say is damn.

  66. Joe in Michigan Says:

Rod Munch: A couple things you left out about last year and this year:

    1) Washington traded both of their outside pass rushers at the trade deadline, together Sweat (12.5) and Young (7.5) had 20 sacks on the year. Does a pass rush help against the pass?

    2) It’s a different defensive system with some different players this year for Washington. Nobody knows how good they’ll be after 1 game.

Just admit the Bucs had a good first game, that Mayfield had a good first game.

By the way, what was your prediction for this game, Rod Munch?

  67. Shane Callahan Says:

Baker shut up the Traskers for at least a week. Go Bucs!!!

  68. Jeagan1999 Says:

    Let’s F*ckin Bake, Bucs!!

    Final score…..Buccaneers 34 – Commanders 20.

    Damn, I’m good.

  69. Rod Munch Says:

Joe in Michigan – I said Baker had a great game today, and was in the gameday thread saying the same thing. I’m just pointing out this defense, last year, was terrible, literally 4 points per game worse than the 2nd worst defense, and they were the worst passing defense. I’m only saying keep expectations in check since he’s not going to pass for 4 TDs every week and have 80% completion rate – if he did, it would literally be the greatest season by a QB ever.

I also agree on the Redskins perhaps not being as bad as last year, but was going more off listening to their fans on sportstalk talking about how bad they expect them to be – while most fans are morons, you can take some things from what they expect to happen, and people expected the Bucs to blow them out.

Also I had the Bucs winning this game, and thought Baker would play well – which is why I had him and Evans in all my daily fantasy lineups (cash plays).

Anyways, lighten up – literally everyone in here today is saying Baker played great. Hopefully he can do it again next week, if he can, the Bucs will win.

  70. Citrus County Says:

For all of the naysayers; We have our version of Drew Brees.
Put forth your arguments as to why not.

  71. Pewter Power Says:

You could see it in the halftime report the barely wanted to mention his name it was freaking awkward. He’s gonna have to do that against the Lions this week and show up in the big games against the top teams. They aren’t going to give him respect he has to take it.

  72. Curse of Gruden Says:

    Go #TEAMPOSITIVE!

  73. Mike C Says:

    LFG oneilbuc!

  74. Mike S Says:

    Anyone watching the Rams-Lions?

    Boy that offense looks familiar.

  75. Kenton Smith Says:

Citrus County I’ll put forth my argument as to “ why not “ . Because first off why be somebody’s version of yourself. They had far different games. I haven’t missed a Mayfield game in 8 years. Brees was great in his game. If Mayfield is with the right team for the next 8 years I think he’ll be better than Brees ever was. First order of business is a Super Bowl. He is starting his 7th year. Brees played 20 years. I’m positive Mayfield won’t do that. Brees won one Super Bowl. If Mayfield wins only one and retires after 15 years I’ll have think Baker was the better QB. But if he wins 1 in the next year or two I think he’ll get another. Citrus County that’s why I don’t want Mayfield to be our version of Drew.Brees.

  76. Bakerfan Says:

Bradshaw gave Baker his game ball closing out the show

  77. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Mike S – You are right. TJ Watt was all over him but even when it wasn’t TJ, Cousins was more a statue. Cousins wasn’t a scrambler before his injury but he looked less mobile today. I wish we had a rusher like Watt.

  78. Luis D Says:

I am floored by the delusional clowns who comment here. I am going to list one statement that I find highly delusional and flamboyantly clownish:
    – Baker is an average qb. Trask is better. Joe, can you please ban any other fool who states this.
Please note that the Trask thing is getting old.He is the worse backup in the league. Also note how many sacks Mayfield avoided today (I stopped counting at 4). The offense did great but the defense is a work in progress and sustained some losses today.

Buckle up! It will be tough

  79. Oneilbuc Says:

Shane. It’s ok bro we are all bucs fan and if anyone on here hope Baker plays bad to hurt the team is not a real bucs fan. I’m so happy the way Baker played today and I hope he plays good next week against the lions. But if he doesn’t it’s ok I don’t expect for a guy to play great every game. Even Brady had bad games I’m going to support Baker Mayfield the same way I did Jamies or any other bucs quarterback. Go bucs !!

  80. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Rod Munch: Okay.

  81. Oneilbuc Says:

Mike C. Already bro I’m a bucs fan and I hope everyone on this team plays good and that includes Baker Mayfield. I really believe we can get to the NFC Championship this year win or lose I will be happy because it’s progress!!

  82. Beach_Buc_Man Says:

Baker has as many playoff wins as 240M Dak, and more TD’s today than Dak had TD’s and Int combined.

In fact the 4 highest paid QBs in the NFL are

    Dal 1TD
    Trevor Lawrence 1TD
    Borrow 0TD
    Love 2TD

Baker has the same number of TD’s as the 4 highest paid QB’s in the NFL combined.

  83. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Good for you Oneil! Glad to hear if!

  84. MadMax Says:

Stink stink, the Baker haters just stink…but thats ok, we have a shower for you to clean up after crapping yourself… all good

    ^^^^^^
Finally !! After shouting from the rooftops for a year and a half someone besides me sees the true value and potential of the Quarterback that was picked from the scrap heap. The “our version” was introduced because I I had to draw attention away from my original “Drew Brees 2.0”. I was berated for even considering Baker in the same universe as Brees. You are suggesting he may even be better. Thank You.

  86. Kenton Smith Says:

Citrus County anyone berating you is on my sh.. list. And thank you for being so nice.

  87. Citrus County Says:

Just remember who pointed out the career and physical comparisons between Mayfield and Brees before anyone else.
One old guy from Citrus County thought Baker Mayfield would have a stellar tenure with the Bucs before anyone else.

  88. Kenton Smith Says:

I’m predicting we stomp some Lions ass next week Citrus County and then everybody on here will say they knew what you have known longer than you have known it. These folks are funnier than hell.

  89. Don'tBmad Says:

Okay so you were wrong about Baker again….stop hoping for the next bad game so you can say you were right.

  90. Red86 Says:

It’s all about consistency. Keep scoring more than 2 tds unlike last year.

  91. Critmark Says:

I only got to see the first three quarters because I live in the 3rd world county of California. Any time it hits 100 degrees the power goes out. But based on what I saw, and read about the end of the game, a few observations.

    * First and foremost…Awesome game, Baker showed why he was a #1 pick. Now keep it up.
    * The run game still needs work. Too many negative plays and for most of what I saw, pitiful YPA.
    * McMillan is going to be a star, but he and Baker need more time working on chemistry. A few blown opportunities they will iron out in time.
    * For anyone who hasn’t yet figured it out (talking to you national media) Evans is a BEAST. On his first TD catch the defender was practically in his jersey.
    * Allowing Baker to change plays at the line is going to pay huge dividends as the season goes on. Like him or not, he is a very bright guy who knows football.

    Go BUCS!

  92. Tb bolts Says:

I’ll do a push up for every maniacal hating rant i went on hating baker last season. So about a million. Dude is a stud and earned every penny today.

  93. heyjude Says:

Baker was magical to watch. The way he moves out of the potential sacks and still drives the ball is something else on another level. Baker found his fit – the Bucs! What a great game! And various sport analysts were talking him up. We all knew his potential. They were too busy hyping up others that didn’t so well yesterday. Go Bucs! Super Bowl here we come!

  94. Kenton Smith Says:

Red86 – Do you live in the past. Last year was last year. Has nothing to do with this year. As far as consistency goes do you reckon that has something to do with the team? I’ve not seen any QBs in my lifetime more consistent than Baker Mayfield. All the bull about his consistency is just that- Bulls…. Go look in the mirror Red86 and say “ I don’t know what I’m talking about “. It’s cathartic and it may shake your stuck in low gear brain on into the present. But probably not. It’s a team game you morons and we’ve got a better team this year. More bullets and more time together.

  95. Red86 Says:

Ok keyboard warrior. It’s obvious it’s a team game. There’s nothing wrong saying to do better than last year. @Kenton Smith

  96. Bucorama76 Says:

Baker, Bucky and Barton, oh my! Great start the the season. If we go into Detroit and play clean football, we have a good shot of coming out with the win. One down 18 to go to the super bowl. Let’s go Bucs!

  97. Scott OD Says:

    Canada’s needs to go
