Liam Coen: The Offensive Line Is Ready

September 6th, 2024

Offensive line chatter.

For all who think the Bucs’ offensive line is the root of all evil and is fully to blame for bird flu, climate change and Roger Goodell, Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen said yesterday the cavalry has arrived.

He believes the Bucs’ front line, featuring two new starters in free agent left guard Ben Bredeson and first-round draft pick Graham Barton, is as battle-tested as it can be preparing for a season and is ready to rock on Sunday.

“We’ve kind of thrown the kitchen sink at these guys since Day 1,” Coen said. “They’ve handled it.”

One reason for the intense preparation, Coen said, is that the Bucs must be ready for everything. Each defensive line has its own challenges. It’s not just players and personnel, Coen said, but how opponents use that personnel.

“We’ve got to have different ways of hitting blocks each week because each defense gives you different things,” Coen said. “We’ve given these guys a lot – there’s a lot on their plates.

“Multiple different schemes – zone, gap, trap, pin-and-pull, whatever it is. We’re not going to just line up and be vanilla.”

Now it seems the only real question is the stamina of a particular rookie center.

The joy of the off season.
Everything is improved. Every weakness addressed.

    Then the whisle blows

I gotta say that comment he made made me go HUH? WTF?

    Go Bucs!

  3. RagingBrisket Says:

No one has suggested the oline is the root of all evil and the rest of that nonsense. Most clear-eyed fans and observers simply acknowledge that the oline the last few years has been atrocious at run blocking and have been getting eaten alive at the point of attack on run downs. The numbers bear it out even if those agenda-driven eyes don’t want to see it. Licht wouldn’t have put so many resources into the oline last few years if he thought it was better than the 32nd ranked rushing attack suggested for two years running.
Hopefully the new staff and newer players have fixed the issues as Coen believes but we can’t know until games are played.
    Go Bucs

That’s a reference to a Joe article from yesterday.

This. Make it so in all facets of the offense, Liam Coen!

Joe , are you stirring the Pot…

    Let’s see 30 points Sunday.

You got to love that statement.

    It’s just about Go Time!!!

  9. Irishmist Says:

Just make sure that they are lined up even with the center. That seems to be the way that the NFL will influence the outcomes in favor of the big rated teams this year. Baltimore was called 4x for this, while the KC tackle was doing it all game AND moving early, and wasn’t called once.

  10. IrishTony Says:

Did anyone watch the Lamar Jackson s##tshow last night. Guy is terrible. Honestly the Ravens looked putrid on offense.

  11. IrishTony Says:

Jackson was bouncing in the pocket for like 5-7 seconds with minimal interference, he’s scanning the field and you’re telling no one was open? Come on! I honestly feel like the league is passing Harbaugh up. I hear a lot of complaints from Ravens fans about this dude.

  12. Pewter Power Says:

Dude played football his whole life he’s fine we’ve never made an issue of a guys stamina before not sure why we are now

  13. Buc4evr Says:

Actually not so worried about the Oline this week, more worried about depth on the Dline with the injury situation. Wonder if Ben Stille will be dressed out to play?

  14. Eckwood Says:

Irishmist is spot on , I watched a third of the game and the Kc tackle moved mega early twice ( that I saw) and I saw KC tackles 1.5 yards off the ball ………. The NFL is shamefully a big corporate action organization …… and not to mention the continuing wokeness or race catering …….. oh I know we should ignore it !! No we should judge it !!
    ThankYou Irishmist !!

  15. Lord Cornelius Says:

I saw enough in preseason to know we have a different run blocking unit and we are going to be better.

The Commanders are weird I don’t know much about them. I thougtht they had some legit DT’s but they were not a great D at all last year and bad against the run and pass.

We need to come out and drop 30+ . LFG!

  16. heyjude Says:

All in on Coen. Throwing the kitchen sink at them. They are ready. Can’t wait for Sunday! Go Bucs!

  17. BAKERSBucs says Says:

I agree the offsides was 1 sided last nite even the so called late hit on mahomes was bs & the offensive line jumped several times no calls Lamar is over rated he sucked in the conf.game last year & last nite did he just get a raise?

  18. Dave Pear Says:

Wow. Read the quote of Coen about each week the guys will hit their blocks differently. Canalwater would’ve thought he’s speaking in ancient Gaelic.

    This warms me.

  19. SlyPirate Says:

Stamina of a Barton because of one comment in one game? No factual fall off in performance. This guy has a long year with you, Joe.

He said he was happy to get a breather. You don’t think other guys were thinking that? They just don’t say anything out loud because of reporters.

    What’s next:
“Man, it’s hot out.” – Barton struggles mightily in the Tampa heat!
“I’m a little sore this morning.” – Barton is a brittle player!
“That was a difficult game.” Barton can’t handle the pressures of the NFL!
“*Cough*” Barton may have developed a life-threatening major infection!

I would hate the media as a pro. Hyperboles. Stop being a jerk to our players. Report on facts.

    @IrishTony

Faith and Begorrah it’s great to have a fellow Irishman posting. There’s Irish Mist and some others, we’re going to turn this blog green!

As for Jackson I agree. He’s an enormous talent but I’m not sure his decision making is at NFL levels but he does make some amazing freaking plays like the Final TD to tie the game…er almost tie the game..guy needed to trim is toenails.

It’s not just his decision making, the words out of his pie hole remind me of another talented QB Fameis Jameis. “Check yo sheets!!” These two are “alibi Ikes”. How about I effed up on that play and will LEARN from it.

But I’m not sure Harbaugh has totally worn out his welcome. He’s posted double digit wins 5 of the past 6 seasons and of course his SB win over his brother Jim.

I do not totally discount what you say however. Just pointing out that he has some “grace” built up.

I think Todd Bowles will be successful. However if he wins 10 or more this season and advances a round in the playoffs, that will keep the wolves at bay but not hold them off for long.

What generally happens with teams in dire straits who work their way out of the hole (In Bowles case the mess left by SB salaries & Brady’s horrid departure)
fans are happy to simply not suck. But once the team has performed as Bowles teams the past two seasons, expectations become very high indeed as in SB or it’s a bad year. Todd is very much in a what have you done for me lately, something neither of the Harbaugh brothers face…yet.

  21. Dave Pear Says:

I too am Irish. As we used to shout in college, “Erin, go braless.”

  22. orlbucfan Says:

Irish women are NFL fans, too. Third generation on father’s side speaking here. LOL. I sure hope Coen has some imaginative calls up his Greensleeves. Like a QB rollout or two? Go Bucs!! Will be rubbing a four leaf clover or two. 🍀

  23. My Momma Says:

Joe, I am more concerned about Jonathan Allen. If you look at his top plays from last year in a You Tube video, he got by Bredeson with ease when he played left guard for the Giants. Watch and wait. They’re going to attack him because those short little arms are not going to be able to stop Mr. Allen. Mark my words.

  24. infomeplease Says:

I believe LC is doing what he should be. This IL will be light years better than the last 2 seasons. That said, man the Ravens have serious OL issues. Their line was getting beat on almost every snap by KC last night.

  25. 76 bucsfan46 Says:

Refs in Ravens vs Chiefs were awful, calling the left tackle for illegal formation 4 times wtf. They went to replay and the guy looked fine. No call on Chiefs tackle playing off and moving early FIXED.
