Liam Coen Ran Out Of Options

Defends Liam Coen.

It is not surprising for Joe to hear a former Bucs offensive lineman stick up for an offensive coordinator when his right tackle is getting abused by a star pass rusher.

But the same guy, surprisingly, refused to defend the right tackle.

Former Bucs guard and former popular local sports radio personality Ian Beckles had Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen’s back while discussing the game on his podcast “In the Trenches.”

Beckles said he heard on local sports radio people ragging on Coen for not doing enough to help backup right tackle Justin Skule block Detroit pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson.

Beckles wanted to know what Coen was supposed to do?

“Let’s get this straight people,” Beckles began. “If you have a fiend out there on the defensive side of the ball, there is only so many things you can do.

“There are only five offensive linemen and one running back. There are only so many things you can do to try to eliminate a great rusher.”

Beckles said Coen did just about everything “and none of them worked.”

That doesn’t mean Beckles felt sorry for Skule.

“I’ve given up three sacks in a game but I don’t ever remember seeing three sacks in a quarter,” Beckles said shaking his head. “That’s a little much.”

Beckles overall was thrilled with the Bucs win.

“To go to Detroit and beat that football team, any time of the year, is a big deal,” Beckles said. “Detroit is a solid football team up and down. … That’s a good football team. We beat a good football team in their house.”

Backup linebacker SirVocea Dennis got major props for his play. It sounded as if Beckles may have a new favorite player.

“SirVocea Dennis, that kid can play,” Beckles said. “He comes downhill and he plays with aggression. I love it. I love it.”

Yeah have to agree with Beckles. Dennis is rapidly becoming one of my favorite Buc defenders. Dude fly’s to the ball and is a very hard hitter. With his glasses on he looks like a G Mccoy I think. Either way I am glad he is a Buc for the foreseeable future. Devon who??

Probably a crazy idea, but maybe Barton could have switched to RT since that’s what he played in college and Hainsey could have taken over at C?
    🤷‍♂️

Doosh – then Hutch would have become the nose tackle.

So I can’t backup Coen on this one. Hutchinson’s had 5 sacks in the game and Coen had him blocked one on one by Otton on the play where Mayfield had to pitch it back to Otton. He put Mayfield at risk and there’s no excuse for that. Is Skule out of his league starting in the NFL? Maybe. I think the media gave Coen a huge break this week

  5. Defense Rules Says:

After the 1st sack Coen might’ve tested the waters by bringing in a 6th big body in exchange for a TE (who seem to be pretty much worthless right now anyway in this offense). That’d still give us 4 weapons (say Evans, Godwin, McMillan & Irving) & it SHOULD give Mayfield sufficient protection (all 6 OLinemen still have to do their job). Might even be fun to run out of a formation like that once in awhile, just to keep the defense honest.

Skule should have never started, period. He was getting abused in training camp, what did the Bucs expect? If they play him this weekend, they can expect the same result. Sad part is that the guy is the backup for both Godeke and Wirfs.
