Liam Coen Breaks Down Baker Mayfield’s Touchdown Run
September 20th, 2024Yesterday when Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen spoke to the local pen and mic club for the first time since the Bucs’ win over the Lions, Coen set up how Baker Mayfield’s number was called for the game-winning touchdown.
It was an 11-yard quarterback draw up the gut. Mayfield weaved and muscled his way through traffic for the score. And Coen didn’t want to call the play exactly at that time. The play before, Mayfield had also scrambled for an 11-yard gain.
Coen wasn’t sure if Mayfield had the stamina to execute two tough runs back-to-back.
“That was a huge drive for us from an offensive and team standpoint,” Coen said of the play. “Having each other’s backs and playing off of one another, where they go down, take the lead, we go down, put a good drive together and go down and Baker makes a great play off of a scramble.
“I was a little hesitant to call the play at the time, just because I figured he might be a little out of breath, but I also knew he’d be a little bit juiced up and have some energy flowing.”
But Coen sensed the element of surprise. ‘
Joe has rarely seen a quarterback execute a quarterback draw from that far out immediately after a scramble. So Coen had a hunch the Lions weren’t prepared.
“I didn’t really think that they would maybe expect that at that moment,” Coen said. “That was a call that we looked at as a staff that we really liked kind of inside the 10[-yard line] and in.
“I called it right at the 11-yard line. They ended up doing the exact defense that we prepared for and had the exact look that we were hunting up.”
The preparation paid off as Mayfield’s score proved to be the difference.

I mean shoot. I was surprised. I think only a handful of people were not surprised. Not counting the Bucs.

Haven’t seen that one called since Tebow was a Gator. Chomp!
Go Bucs!

Provides a little insight into Coen’s offensive mind. I think he’s already proved to be a better OC than Canales. Hope he can keep it up.

I will forever thank the Panthers for taking Canales.

Canales was a good guy and got a promotion , happy for him. There is no comparison when it comes to play calling and adjustments. Licht needs to tie up Liam Cohen with a big fat contract or he will be gone next year.

It been great watching Baker grow into the role QB/leader of this team. He absorbed a good bit of punishment in the sacks . On an earlier run he took a hit
to the head and neck area as he was going down that could of been disastrous.
IMO, Baker’s ability to come up with “must have” plays is a trait not recognized
by some the talking heads.

Both TDs were well-prepared. Godwin’s was also a masterpieces.

with Canales leaving the Bucs for Carolina, the Bucs ended up getting the better of the deal.
Cohen is much more imaginative as a play caller, whereas Canales seem to be learning on the fly.
The Bucs are making a run to play deep into the playoffs.

Havnt seen such creativity on offense since Arians left, this has been a treat as a Bucs fan who has watched ALOT of bad Bucs offenses and even worst play calling.. thank you Coen keep the creative juices flowing bro!

Echoing “Win in the Trenches”. Not sure if Coen is head coach material, but the Bucs need to lock him up with the carrot that Tod Bowles has hinted he does not want tot coach forever.

Two games in and Coen is looking to be a very good OC. Like Joe said awhile back, Baker is Houdini. I was holding my breath when Baker had the pressure on him in the past two games, and then he twisted and turned out of nowhere. Even got a TD that the Lions were not ready for. He is a fighter and we are so lucky to have him as our QB.

Coen is head and shoulders better than Canales, thank you Panthers. You helped us big time with this one!

stuff like that is what makes me believe in an OC.

I can’t stand Canals for leaving like he did but I am glad he is gone simultaneously. Coen seems like a better OC and a better person, as well.

I’m so happy with this team and coaches thus far. Plus, there’s a lot of room to get much better. I hope they keep getting better. Go Bucs!

When one good play call is in the only one in scoring drive of a half and the other 4 drives consist of 14 plays with 2 first downs, 24 total yards and 4 punts I cannot give the OC ovations for creativity. Second longest play in that scoring drive was a defensive facemask and upped the Probability of scoring on the very first play. Coen called a terrible game and did not have his offense prepared. Period.
Against teams like the Commanders he looks like a genius. Broncos are coming to town next so come Monday he’ll be mentioned with the likes of Bill Walsh and Paul Brown.
