Baker Mayfield’s “One Good Aggressive Throw After Another”

September 9th, 2024

Joe loves hearing ex-quarterbacks talk about current QBs.

They deliver a quality nugget or two because they’re seeing the game differently than most.

Today, that guy was former Bucs QB Chris Simms (2004-2007) on NFL on NBC look at yesterday’s Bucs victory.

“First off, Baker Mayfield was awesome, especially early on in the football game,” Simms said. “And let me just say five consecutive scoring drives and just one good aggressive throw after another. I mean, Baker really threw the ball awesome today. And I think what’s impressive off of that is they had a little running game along with it.

“If they can get that going with a guy like Baker Mayfield, because Baker Mayfield, if you can get people to creep up to the line of scrimmage and start worrying about the run game, he is a guy that’s going to go, ‘Oh, you’re creeping up too close, I’m going to throw it deep to Mike Evans. I’m not going to let you off the hook here. And I think their offense is built like that, too.”

After rewatching the game, Joe certainly agrees with Simms on the aggressiveness of Mayfield. He confidently was throwing lots of fastballs. In fact, his whole game was aggressive. Mayfield was determined not to get sacked and escaped a bunch of trouble.

Mayfield told the world this summer that a team giving him stability, trust and the keys to an offense would see a better quarterback. So far, he’s 100 percent correct.

I have a suggestion for Licht, and I’m being serious. After rewatching most of this game, Licht needs to immediately go trade for Devin White. Give them a 6th or 7th or whatever, but get him back. Britt is f-ing awful. Slow slow slow, unless someone is running directly at him he’s completely worthless. His blitzes were slow, RBs were beating him to the edge, he was terrible.

I think White only signed like a $5m deal, so the Bucs could afford him, and that would be the most well spent money this season.

At the very least they need to make Dennis the starter – he actually looked like an NFL LB with speed and quickness needed for the spot, where as Britt looked exactly like what he is, a very good college LB who is too slow for the NFL and should be on special teams or off the roster.

  2. Bucsfan Says:

He also showed some nice finesse early on the pass to McMillan , which had he not dropped it , that was a touchdown.

  3. Beeej Says:

White was one of the worst linebackers in the NFL last year, no reason to assume he’d be any better NOW

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Baker is confident….offense is very healthy and will have to carry us because our defense is on life support

  5. Dave Pear Says:

Chris Simms – what a joke. No accountability or ownership for his putrid takes.

  6. geno711 Says:

Gosh Munch is on every thread dissing Britt. I am not going to support Britt. But we get it, Britt’s speed is less than ideal. He clearly is not a good coverage linebacker, but he seems to be in the right spot more than Devin White was last year.

Because if you are hoping for the Devin White of 2020, that guy seemingly no longer exists. Didn’t you watch all the bad angles that White took year. Better speed does not matter if you consistently read the play poorly.

The coaching had enough of White and so do I. The Bucs actually want Dennis to be the guy over Britt but right now, Britt has more experience.

Let’s see how the year goes with Dennis and Britt, before rushing out to get an also ran dude whose best years are behind him.

    Rod Munch
You’re the only one who wants Devin White back and it’s not happening. He sucked other than the Super Bowl year. We do not need him back, Dennis played very well did you not see that?

  8. a-bomb Says:

Devin White leaving here is the classic addition by subtraction. Having that knucklehead out of the locker room makes the team better.

  9. geno711 Says:

Rather go Bobby Wagner of the Redskins than Devin White of the Eagles if we think neither Britt nor Dennis can handle the job. A little more salary to pay this year but no dead cap like White has over the next 4 seasons.

  10. Alstott to Canton Says:

    Dave Pear
I could say the same on all your takes about Mike Evans. Your takes are worse than Simms

  11. Alstott to Canton Says:

Britt didn’t have a good game but it’s just week one calm down. Dennis played very well and I’m sure Britt knows the pressure is on

  12. A Bucs Fan Says:

Nice to hear Chris say something positive about the Bucs… I know he loved the team but hates Gruden and has been bitter about how Gruden treated him during his recovery from rupturing his spleen while playing the Bucs.

Maybe time is mellowing him out a bit since we are so far removed from those days.

As far as the convo about Devin White. It’s not happening. His selfish attitude and lack of discipline made him a worse LBer than KJ Britt. Now Britt didn’t play well but he’s also not the same player. He’s a disciplined run stopper. End of story. Now Dennis played pretty well and hopefully we’ll see him get more responsibility as the season goes on. Either way the Bucs LB’s are what they are this season. I don’t see helping coming.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Rod … The Devin White ship has sailed, and Devin burnt his bridges behind him for good measure. Actually he didn’t just burn them; he blew them up.

Our ILB depth (or lack thereof) is already starting to haunt us. If you look at last week’s Injury Report, Bucs had 11 on defense who made the list (all but 4 of those suited up). And then we proceeded to get several others dinged up during the game (Bryce Hall, Josh Hayes, McCollum).

I wasn’t particularly enamored with Britt’s play yesterday either, but it looks like Todd Bowles was rotating Britt & Dennis anyway. Whitehead, Winfield & Dean were th only defenders to play 100% snaps yesterday (59) and LVD played 98% (58). Britt got 66% (39) and Dennis got 36% (21) meaning that the 3 ILBs covered the full 59 (x2) def snaps. Have to believe at this point that Bowles was playing Britt & Dennis situationally. Certainly wouldn’t bench a guy after 1 game (Britt did have 5 tackles, 3 of them solo and came very close to getting a sack on 1 play).

  14. J Says:

Have a suggestion and I’m dead serious… Rod should never give suggestions.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

geno711 … ‘The Bucs actually want Dennis to be the guy over Britt but right now, Britt has more experience.’

I thought the Bucs were hoping that Dennis would be LVD’s replacement if he retired. I like our #4 ILB (Russell), but he’s a lot better on S/Ts than as a starting ILB. Looks to me like Bowles is trying to get both Britt AND Dennis some decent field time early in the season, in the hopes of improving our depth in that position group.

Was noticing that Kwon Alexander is still out there as a free agent. He’s kinda bounced around since leaving here in 2018 (49ers, Saints, Jets, Steelers) but he’s gotten some good reps every year (he’s averaged around 600 def snaps per year). And he’s still only 30. Long shot, but the Bucs might want to kick the tires there to see if he might be able to help us.

    ^^^^^

He looked SO SLOW in the preseason. He’s a liability. The Bucs have more/faster options. They moved to them in the game. I’m not worried, but surprised they didn’t draft one. Licht will pick up 1-2 MLB in the next draft.

  17. Let Em Bake Says:

I actually agree with Rod…. Bowles always treated Dean respectfully, and I think Dean has learned the grass ins’t always greener.. The potential upside is simply too great not to make the offer. Like Whitehead, Dean has probably learned how player-friendly Bowles is… He’s only 26 for goodness sake.

  18. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Sirvocea Dennis might need to be the starter over Britt.

  19. heyjude Says:

Good for Chris Simms speaking out. Baker is awesome! And he is our number one QB!

  20. BucsGuy Says:

Didn’t Chris Simms say a week ago that the Falcons were going to win the division and the Bucs would completely miss the playoffs this year? That guy can eat a dick, and he slobbered up plenty of Mahomes’ when he was reporting Thursday night

  21. Joe Says:

Didn’t Chris Simms say a week ago that the Falcons were going to win the division

Him and many, many, many, many others.

Where’s Trask to the Future and his Baker regression train?

  23. ir8oldman Says:

The Frachise Savior Devin White might have learned a wee bit of humility. That right there may make him redemmable to the lockeroom, and to the coaches.

    What could possibly go wrong?

  24. Alstott to Canton Says:

    SlyPirate
Yes Britt looked slow but he’s gonna bounce back and make some plays, if not he knows Dennis is gonna take his job. Also Licht probably would have drafted a linebacker but the ones that we wanted got picked before we could land them. No time to panick though, I believe Britt will bounce back and David is always solid. We are going through some injuries rn which is concerning but next man up. Let’s Go Bucs

  25. ManzielMadness Says:

Devon White got benched by the Eagles and their LB’s are terrible lol.

  26. Gipper Says:

Fun listening to the Johnny Come Latelies to the 4peat and Mayfield MVP race. Most of these commentators never have had an original thought. Here’s one: Bucs are going to thrive on offense all year.

  27. geno711 Says:

Good assessment DR. Makes more sense.

  28. Ocalabucfan Says:

Hey Joe what about those power rankings today? 16th. Up two spots… What the hell? Baker looked great. I believe I’m on record for saying that Mayfield would be a great quarterback for Tampa and would get a long term deal after his 1 year audition. Seemingly I said this within a few days of them signing him to the one-year contract. Anyway, I can’t wait to see the new commercials using the buck stadium and the pirate ship!!! Welcome to Tampa Baker…

  29. Willow Says:

Munchable rod. You can’t criticize Baker any more so now you are going after other doods

  30. GoneGator Says:

How did this comment thread get off track discussing a LB when the article is about the QB?
    Oh yea.. Munch – lol

They’re calling in sick today 🤷🏼🤣

Sorry, Joe doesn’t quote other Bucs sites like that with that kind of thing here. Appreciate it, though.–Joe

  32. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Gulper go back to playing with your Baker blowup doll. Everybody having different opinions are allowed since butt holes like you are allowed up here. I’ll throw dirt at Baker if he plays horrible and praise when he plays like yesterday. That was the most complete game I’ve ever seen him play and it was beautiful. Go back to your fantasy island where the whole world cherishes Baker

  33. stpetebucfan Says:

Just heard from my son who lives in Columbus and is a Browns fan.

He told me about watching the Browns yesterday with my grandson and both of them wanting to puke. All the Browns fans wish they had Baker right now big time!

Which means we should thank our lucky stars for the ownership we have in Tampa, instead of the family in Cleveland. The Glazers have more than held up their end of the bargain with the community. After Culverhouse I think everybody was justifiably gun shy about what NFL ownership looks like. But the Glazers have been truly involved in the community and done a terrific job of managing the Bucs. Letting JL run the show and keeping stability the Bucs are the anti-Browns when it comes to culture.

The Glazers have truly done a great job saving us the pain of those poor Cleveland fans, or the memories of the Culverhouse Bucs. YEOW!!!

BucsGuy I couldn’t have said it better. I also wouldn’t have said it better. Still have all those raised in a baptist church hangups. But respect for your bluntness. Refreshing.

  35. SenileSenior Says:

Mayfield has opened the eyes of many of his naysayers with just the one game. Most here knew what we had with him … and we were not just so-called homers. Now some respect for Baker will be applied to the team as well.

    Go Bucs!!!

  36. Gipper Says:

    DavidBigBucFan99,

Wow…..A lot of hostility there. The good news is you can get the help you need. Go take a pill and call your doctor in the morning.

  37. Gipper Says:

    Oh and DavidBigBucsFan99,

Nobody gives a damn what you think about Mayfield. Somehow it seems more important to care what Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Todd Bowles think about Mayfield. Got it BigGuy?

  38. Don'tBmad Says:

Clown fans always complain…even after wins. A lot of teams picked ahead of Tampa lost their first game. Imagine those fan bases. The fast food mentality of casual sports fans(most of which never even played or truly understand the game) is hilarious when they overreact to every little thing. Bucs were picked in the middle of the pack so stacking “,W’s” is all you can hope for.
