Joe Tryon-Shoyinka Says Bucs Defense Has to Rise Up

September 29th, 2024

Stop the run, JTS says.

No A.J. Brown? No DeVonta Smith? No Lane Johnson (maybe)? Doesn’t matter, Joe Tryon-Defense told Joe last week. The defense must play better.

How much better? Sort of like it did in Detroit.

“It’s another game in the NFL,” JTS said. “In professional football, everyone is good. They are professionals.

“You have to have it in your mind it will be a physical game … and understand how they can attack us.”

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts may not have his favorite targets to throw to but that doesn’t mean Hurts can’t hurt the Bucs with his legs.

“The quarterback, we have to be disciplined with our running gaps,” JTS said. “You have to know who has the quarterback at all times. You can’t let him get around the edge.”

Then there is the best running back in the NFL currently, Saquon Barkley. Too much attention on Hurts and then Barkley will burn you.

“You can’t let him get those north-south running gaps,” JTS said. He’s a dynamic runner. He’s super hard to bring down. He’s going to be a big challenge.”

As far as the Eagles being a physical team, JTS said there is no doubt.

“They want to test you,” JTS said. “They want to see what you are all about.”

What’s crazy about the Bucs defense is as much as Todd Bowles stresses defending the run, the Bucs are awful in run defense — ranking in the bottom-10 in the NFL in both total rushing yards and yards per carry.

That doesn’t sound like a Bowles defense to Joe.

It sounds like a Bowles defense without Vea, Kancey and Winfield to me. Whitehead is gonna need to ball out. As well as David, Britt, Dennis and Tykee Smith.

Just read a breakdown of Nix against Tampa and the author made several good points. Nix is terrible when not blitzed and was only blitzed around 20% of the time in the first 2 games. Bowles blitzed 43% of the time. On top of that Bowles came out in a cover 3 shell which Nix has probably seen 1,000 times. Denver doubled their RPO plays from weeks 1 and 2. Nix went from holding the ball for 2.8 seconds to 2.57 which is really good. Part of the problem was when we blitzed so often there was an obvious quick read for Nix who could throw it before Tampa shifted. Nix actually felt so comfortable that he attempted a no look pass. It wasn’t completed by dang did Bowlels do exactly the opposite of what good scouting says to do against Nix. Blanket receivers, send 4 with occasional timely blitzes (back side nickel for example), and use a spy for RPO plays. I will give credit for Denver’s O Line not allowing much, But Bowels didn’t do this team any favors. Offense is another story completely.

We want to run the ball but are one of the worst at running. We want to defend the run but are one of the worst at it. It’s backwards. Aaaand we can still beat the tweety birds. It’s a BUCS life! Go BUCS!

  4. Dave Pear Says:

Just allow a first drive TD which is your coach’s usual JTS. Meanwhile you keep flying around the back of the QB and keep whiffing on those tackles. Just as you’ve been coached to do.

  5. Permanently Moderated Says:

JTS needs to take his own advice. The guy is basically taking up space.

  6. Hodad Says:

Dan O on ESPN pointed out what many on here have said, that Buc DBs give so much cushion there’s easy completions. Combine that with us getting zero sacks from YaYa again, and JTS you can see how a rookie picked us apart. Now we find out even with a heavy dose of blitz we still couldn’t get home it becomes worrisome. They were starting a rookie tackle to boot. When we start a backup tackle the whole line crumbles tho. Go figure.

  7. Buc2Blame Says:

He will be invisible all game

  8. Buc4evr Says:

JTS rising up…. 😂. Yeah everybody is good in the NFL except JTS. Total joke and waste of roster space. Bucs are going to get killed today.

  9. Badbucs Says:

“You can’t let him get around the edge.” Good job JTS. You learned the number one rule on paper. When do you think either one of you guys on the edges might start employing it? You repeatedly lost the QB from Washington and Denver. Do you think maybe you should contain Hurts? That’s funny coming from JTS.
The defense against Denver was off some but the main problem is still the offense. You don’t win scoring 7. McMillan was a great player to pick up in the 3rd but I think I’d rather have another guard to put out there right now. Same for Tykee. Luxury picks when we needed road graders. Dumpster diving for Brederson not looking to promising right now……

JTS has a breakout game today!! Putting thoes positive vibes out there… GO BUCS!!!

Captain Obvious says this. Sheesh. Amazingly dumb thing to say.

  12. Bucamania Says:

The secondary will be fine except for ’10 yard cushion Dean.’

Need Yaya to have a big game.
