Jason Licht Talks Week 1 Offense, Reflects On Liam Coen Hire

September 10th, 2024

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht really likes Tampa Bay’s new offensive coordinator.

Licht was a guest on the Buccaneers Radio Network this evening and was asked about seeing his 2024 offense debut with 37 points — without the benefit of a turnover.

The GM emphasized the creativity of playcaller Liam Coen, which will get the conspiracy theorists looking to throw darts at his predecessor Dave Canales, the new Panthers head coach.

“It’s a good feeling,” Licht said. “It’s good to know that we’re going to go into games and we have a lot options and a lot of weapons, and there’s a lot of creativity going on with our offense right now. And that’s something Todd spoke to me a lot about before we hired Liam, what he was looking for, and so far they’re delivering.

“A lot of energy, a lot of fresh ideas. He did a very good job at University of Kentucky with the quarterback that’s now with the Titans, Will Levis. But then he also has the experience in L.A. with Sean McVay, but he’s not a copycat. He has his own ideas, the way he likes to do things. So it’s not like you’re just hiring somebody from a staff, you know, and you’re expecting him to be Sean McVay. He’s his own guy. So far he’s been awesome.”

Earlier in the broadcast, Todd Bowles actually noted that the Bucs had a great chance to put up 50-plus points Sunday if they were able to clean up a couple of mistakes. Bowles sounded like he expects to see the Bucs push the 50 mark at some point this season.

Scoring was down last year in the NFL, but five teams averaged 25 or more points. They all made the playoffs.

The Bucs likely have enough talent to average 25 points per game, but will they get there? They’re off to a great start.

Macmillan sure gets wide open. Without the drop and the face mask/holding he could have had three long touchdowns last game. Barton and Irving are filling needs, too. Baker is the funnest qb in the league, too.

Love not needing one our best weapons…Jake Camaros..,,1 punt

Did anyone else get a “tingle” down their leg watching this game? What a great comfort it was to sit on my neighbors couch eating bang bang shrimp and never knowing what the next play was going to be! Never once did I shout out “ White into Mauch or Hainseys butt!” There IS a GOD. It looks like we have a real OC. Go Bucs!!!

  4. Bucnjim Says:

It’s not a conspiracy if it’s true. Everyone was saying Canales made Mayfield and I never even considered that thought. After week 1 looks like it was the other way around.

  5. Scott Says:

Macmillan and Bucky take the offense to the next level.

    Thank you 🙏

You can get some antibiotics for that.

  8. A Bucs Fan Says:

Coen runs the same play out of many different formations. It’s an illusion. From my couch the only play I 100% predicted was CG14’s TD.

  9. orlbucfan Says:

It’s been In Licht I Trust for this fan since he signed Cam Brate as an UDFA. I was sold. I sure hope Coen will eventually let this/his Offense do some trick plays before the season’s end. Go Coen, Bowles, and Cardiac Bucs!!

  10. Citrus County Says:

I will say again, fans need to listen closely to what the coaches and Jason Licht say and don’t say.

Jason Licht; “So it’s not like you’re just hiring somebody from a staff, you know….”

Last year we had to take what we could get and it wasn’t all that bad.

Last years success AND Baker Mayfield AND Todd Bowles got us the opportunity to get what we have this year.

Dave Canales got a HEAD COACH JOB largely because of Baker Mayfield.

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

I liked the sideline scene where Carbs was sitting with his OL and Bake comes up to them to talk to Carbs. Bake was very animated and appeared to be saying good things – I think Goedeke had a big smile on his face. I like the communication and teamwork I’m seeing.

Did Bowles really say something about 50pts?

  12. JimBobBuc Says:

When is Palmer going to stop holding? He killed us last year with some holds and he’s back at it again. He’s hurting the team and reducing his snap count!

    Depends?

  14. Citrus County Says:

    Some (maybe) might remember the old Saturday Night Live Skit ;

    “Can you say eggamuffin ?”

    Well…

Can you say ” Franchise Quarterback” ?

  15. Permanently Moderated Says:

    Eggamuffin, yeah.

  16. GoneGator Says:

Should be an interesting matchup w/Detroit since they just played LA and Liam’s learned so much of his “system” from McVay.

Being able to see how Detroit played D against similar formations/concepts could be a help…. But playing teams with similar systems 2 weeks in a row COULD benefit Detroit.

I believe Coen will be able to use this to our advantage if he is as smart as he appears to be 🤞🏼

  17. Crickett Baker Says:

Citrus, I don’t remember that one but it called to mind an old Furry Freak Brothers cartoon. The brothers are lying in a hay pile smoking a doobie. A guy walks up to them and says, disdainfully, “God helps those who help themselves”. One of the brothers replied, “All things come to those that wait”.

  18. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Bucs will average 30+ points per game this year.

And if so, we should go the Monte Kiffin route and make Coen Assistant Head Coach/OC after the season and pay him like a HC,so he doesn’t get poached to another team.

bake reminds me of the best of bret favre- balling out lowering a shoulder somehow sneaking out of a collapsed pocket. fun pump a team up stuff. down for it! now do it on the lions and im really impressed

nprbuc – you caused me to waste more than a wee dram of whiskey reading your post, I sprayed the ipad.

LOL – it was a Jameson’s . You don’t need to send me a bottle or anything – I’ll just be prepared next time.

Meanwhile, hearing that Todd wants a 50 burger gives me the warmest of warms.

  22. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Todd needs to focus on the defensive side of the ball and teach them how to pluck an interception or two for a change. Including his number one leading lawn chair dean. Its been years since he’s had one.

The eggamuffin skit was an Eddie Murphy bit. Eddie did some hilarious stuff. Much of his stuff should be seen again because it is even more relevant today. It’s on you tube if you look for it.

  24. Jeff Says:

Washington was fun. Reality check this Sunday. Lions 30 Bucs 16

  25. David Says:

They barely cleared 20 points a game last year, and only did that because of a couple games. If they are anywhere close to 30 points a game they are definitely winning the division, winning 10+ games, and in the playoffs.

  26. Fan of the South Says:

Even with the Rams Coen was able to impress with Offense and wins against weak teams.

This Great Offense was more of a by product of Dan Quinn and his coaching style.
He had his secondary playing in a soft zone the entire game. Why? So that he can go thru every play or situation and teach his players where and how they can get better. Coen looked great because of it.

Big deal was to start fast.

If I remember correctly the Bucs took the ball and was 3 and out had it not been for a Defensive penalty. Mayfield’s 3rd down throw to a wide open receiver was not even close. Drive ended in a FG.

Another opening Drive without a Touchdown. Actually the game was 1/3 over before the Bucs got it in the End Zone on what was the weakest Defense in 2023 playing a prevent defense basically.

Even with Mayfield and the Rams in 2022 they hung a bunch of points (51) on a weak team. Coen benefited from the Broncos throwing 4 interceptions.
Coen’s offense was so impressive coming down the stretch that season that he
that he was invited back to the University of Kentucky and not the Rams or any other NFL team.

Maybe the Bucs have found a couple of rare gems off the Garbage Pile. Need to beat ssomeone better than the Commader though.

  27. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Fan of the south – that was a pour and ill-informed take imo. First, Coen never called plays for the Rams – he was an offensive coordinator but not play caller. Second – oh never mind.

Makes sense, because Baker did a photo recreation of Favre’s draft call. I think he probably patterned his game after Favre’s to an extent.

I seem to remember a lot of Browns fans liked that too…but apparently forgot that sometimes even Favre had games with lots of INTs, etc. Baker won’t only have great games. And that should be expected. I don’t know why it seems like QBs aren’t allowed any room to grow anymore. Montana had some pretty bad games too.

    Anyway, end rant.

  29. rrsrq Says:

If he is successful and the saints eventually circle the drain… I will leave it at that

It was reported that Coen called plays for Mayfield that season

That was actually Bill Murray when he was with 2nd City. It was a National Lampoon Mr. Rogers Neighborhood skit with Chris Guest.

He usually woke up when the sun got warm.

Glad to see that others are ‘easily amused’ too

  32. John Ransom Says:

How many times did the Bucs run White up the middle last year on 1st down for less than 2 yards?

Even just less of that would be fantastic!
