Jason Licht Implies Bucs Will Be Extra Patient With Calijah Kancey

September 17th, 2024

So the Bucs are undefeated with their most explosive defensive tackle on the bench.

Calijah Kancey tweaked/pulled a calf muscle just before opening day. He hasn’t practiced since.

Joe is not expecting to see him on the field on Sunday.

How bad is the calf? Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht spoke right before Sunday’s kickoff and noted how players around the NFL appear to be coming back too quickly from calf pulls.

“He’s getting better. That’s for sure,” Licht said of Kancey. “You got to be careful. You know, you see around the league, guys that tried to come back too early with that similar injury and it sets them back. So you got to be careful.”

Licht’s comments came on the Buccaneers Radio Network and Joe was glad to hear them.

There’s no reason to rush Kancey. The Bucs managed his calf issue well last year and he started 14 games plus the playoffs. If Kancey can do that again, Joe will take it with a smile.

It’s OK, we got this, take your time.
When you get back we’ll have us a grand time!

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

I think that’s a direct comparison to CMC. I don’t think Kancey will be back until week 5/6.

  3. Steven #55 Says:

What about poor Devin White being a healthy Scratch last night Joe lol

  4. Bojim Says:

Want him back healthy and able to play.

  5. Knothead71 Says:

He came back to early last year from a calf injury.
I agree, let him sit and get healed up. Same with Vea.

  6. Buc4evr Says:

I have a feeling this guy is going to have a short injury prone career, hope I’m wrong. If he remains unavailable he is of no use.

  7. Bucsfan81 Says:

He needs to get on the field he is spending to much time injured the past 2 seasons

  8. stpetebucfan Says:

It’s obviously not to soon to think of setting up for a playoff run.

The 2-0 start gives the Buc’s some breathing room. Much better to have Calijah healthy and playing well for those last six games of the year than the next six.

IF the Bucs want to make a serious run at a SB they’ll need some stars to regain health, starting with Kancey.

  9. BakerFan Says:

Out for 3 or 4 games then it will take 3 or 4 games for him to get into game shape. That is a half a season, but he will be expected to be paid like a full 17 game season star player. Wonder these days if players are actually injured or just hurting?

  10. Rag Says:

Give credit to Bucs defensive front. Looking back at the two previous games against the Lions, it seemed Goff had all the time in the world in the pocket. Sunday, the Bucs may have had “0” sacks but Buc’s defenders were continuously in Goff’s face, making him rush his throws and throw interceptions even without Kancey and half the game without Vea. Hats off to the defensive line.

    Take as long as needed

  12. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

This is the second calf injury in as many seasons.

Is the guy just prone to calf issues? Is he getting charlie horses in the calf and trying to work through them? Is there something he’s doing that needs to be changed?

To be out multiple weeks he had to have torn up the muscle decently. Calf injuries are not typical. What’s happening here?

  13. Pelsbuc61 Says:

And when he does come back, it will take a couple of games for him to “shake off the rust” He’s a porcelain doll! He’s a bust until he dominates on the field, not just get back to the lineup. Now that Vea is injured, he needs to get back on the field!

    “SEPTEMBER TRAVEL WITH CK”
Catchy name, huh? I think we should pitch Licht on a food and travel show? If CK was good at it, I would care less about when (if) he ever played.

I know! Dequan Bowers can be his cohost!

    How’s the draft for DT?
    CK – out
    Hall – out
    Vea – out

Not hard to guess what Licht and his scouts are looking for right now.

  15. 1#bucsfan Says:

Sly hall played against the lions.

  16. Bubby Says:

He’s quick, but too small and likely will go down as a first round bust. His unheralded replacements are big and slow, but doing a an admirable job.. not to mention durable.

  17. Mike Says:

I suspect he will be out until game 6.

Y’all have no idea what a pulled or torn calf muscle is like!! Not only is it very painful, it takes a long time to heal. It also can be a repeatable injury. Kancey is a warrior and hates being unable to play more anyone of you!! Cut the guy slack!!

  19. Particular set of skills Says:

Just happens. Premature to label. Some comments here….. “Porcelain”, “bust”, “too small”, etc lack historical perspective. Even back to back years….
Kancey looks like he can be special. So, you take your time.

Dont care about sacks. Aiden H. had almost 5 sacks…..
Its pressure & timing. Goff threw how many balls in the dirt?

This was a team effort against a quality team.

Great job defense!! Goff 50+pass attempts, 3 billion yards passingand still a loss!

  20. BucU Says:

Kancey is a major disappointment in my eyes. Another week and wknd on the couch. He’s useless to us if he can’t play. When he does come back how many games is it going to take to get back in football shape? Major disappointment to this team.

  21. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I really don’t understand you guys who get so down on players who get injured. You think this dude got injured on purpose? You think he’s TRYING to take money out of his own pocket? Go through ONE NFL practice and tell me if you’re “injured or just hurting”.
CK is an absolute beast and when he gets back on the field he’ll prove it to all you internet tough guys.

  22. Booger Says:

I just want him completely healed and fully healthy, 💯… And, if it takes until after the ‘bye-week’ to get there, I’m totally good with that. Same goes for Junior & Vea. I’d like to hope they’ll all be ready for New Orleans & Atlanta tho!

  23. Booger Says:

Is he working out too much and going too hard on the beach all off-season… I Are those workouts putting too much wear and tear on his already ‘tender’ calf from last season!?

    ……..

You know not what you talk about….I have had 2 of them, 1 a slight tear the other a full tear with blown blood pool turning my whole foot and ankle beet red.

No one has said he tore his calf. Just been saying it is sore and stiff. It is about time for him to show up or move on from him like they had to do with Carlton Davis. Half time players do you little good.

  25. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I tore my calf muscle on July 7th on the pickle ball court. I heard it “pop,” which means it was a Grade 2 or Grade 3 tear. I am about 10 weeks out and my left calf is still a bit swollen and doesn’t feel normal. I am able to go on significant hikes and it’s fine while being used. However, it still is very tight and hurts when I’m just sitting down.
There is no way for an NFL player to play with this injury in just a couple weeks if he truly tore it. He’ll need to rest it several more weeks. Never hurt a calf before, and I sure as hell hope it never happens again.

  26. Panhandle Buc Says:

I want him back for the Slimy Saints game!!!!!!!!!

  27. Buccos Says:

How do you get that badly hurt on a Friday walkthrough

  28. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

Shame what a talent and bust for us. This what he will be until his contract is over. Part time player

  29. BucU Says:

“”How do you get that badly hurt on a Friday walkthrough””

That’s the thing. Is he going to be a chronic? For his sake I hope he doesn’t get injured again after he finally does return. That would officially label him an injury prone player across the league.

  30. Dave Pear Says:

GMC missed a lot of games his first two seasons dealing with wonky biceps. From year 3, he rarely missed time. GMC was not my fave, overrated IMO, but he is an example how someone can have a condition that is fixable.

I’m sure the trainers are deep into CK’s calves, and will have him work with a specialist. Dude is a great player. Those claiming his demise are way ahead of your bourbon.

  31. Capt.Tim Says:

I said it the day we drafted him.
He’s too small. Gonna be injury prone, some will turn into chronic problems.

But, He’s a Buc now. We have to handle him with kid gloves. He can have an impact. We just have to keep him as low usage. When he’s hurt, gotta put him on the shelf. Use him as a specialist, not a starter. Sucks, but here we are.

  32. BucsFanDestin Says:

He’ll get better and play, rinse and repeat. He’ll be out at the begging of next season too. This is just a guy who gets hurt.

  33. Gofortheface30 Says:

Ohhh bigpoppa – don’t be such a star fuker. Spare me the lecture and whatever empathy you expect me to have. Some players ARE one thousand percent injury prone. No, that isn’t ideal nor should it even be acceptable if he ends up being an 11-12 game a year guy. It’s amusing you talk about how practice is so tough, it isn’t. This ain’t two a days, and they aren’t hitting. It isn’t Seal Training. Spare me. I spend my entire life lifting and running so it would be my pleasure to run around out there and I feel pretty comfortable saying I won’t get the same injury over and over and over annnnnd over. These cupcake practices are likely the very reason why more of you low t Gen z’ers keep getting hurt
