“I Love Baker Mayfield”
September 15th, 2024Baker Mayfield has a fan in arguably the greatest football coach of all time.
Bill Belichick has gone from treating the media like everyone has COVID-19 and are actively sneezing on him, to himself becoming an accomodating media star. He’s on so many shows and so many podcasts now, Joe has lost count.
One of his gigs is “Inside the NFL,” the NFL Films-produced long-running weekly show. There, Belichick was talking Bucs.
In choosing a “football guy,” a gritty non-star who had the best game of the week, co-host Chad Johnson nominated Baker Mayfield.
While Belichick did not choose Mayfield (Belichick was acting as a judge and jury — he picked the winner between nominations from other co-hosts including Ryan Clark and Chris Long), but Belichick sure made his feelings were known.
“I love Baker Mayfield!” Belichick exclaimed. “I love what he did down there.
“He has revived his career. Overcome adversity. I love Baker Mayfield.”
And it seems Belichick is maybe sort of fond of… Joe Tryon-Shoyinka?
In breaking down Bucs defensive tape in a package where Belichick was previewing today’s Bucs-Lions matchup, twice Belichick gave props to JTS for affecting plays: once when Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels was flushed to the right and JTS chased him down forcing Daniels out of bounds. Then Belichick loved how JTS covered so much real estate and cut off the angle preventing Daniels from getting downfield.
A second play was when JTS got penetration on a run play forcing Commandos running back Brian Robinson inside where he was gang-tackled for a loss. Belichick cited JTS for sealing the edge, giving Robinson no other option but to go inside.
Belichick used the words “great” and tremendous” in describing JTS’s plays.
Yes, Joe was stunned. And perhaps this sort of explains why Todd Bowles isn’t publicly hounding JTS? Maybe JTS is doing more things right that most don’t see — other than sacking the quarterback, of course.

Might be one of only a few Bucs to accomplish that all day. Speed isn’t really his problem. Good luck to him in rounding out his game.

Mayfield has proven himself to be an above average QB. Hopefully this is the year JTS breaks out and proves Licht made the right decision to pick him late in the first round.

Belichick’s recent history hasn’t been super QB friendly.
It’s hard to argue against what we saw last week, though.
The numbers were good and Mayfield passed the eye test.
He threw that ball well.
Detroit isn’t Washington though.
We’ll keep watching and keep seeing what happens.

Bill was spot on about pressuring Goff up the middle. They could have had four interceptions that way if they caught them all. Turns out two was enough!
