“He’s Pretty Sore. We’ll See How He Feels”

September 9th, 2024

This will make you want to puke. Joe just mopped up the floor of JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.

Joe shared last night that Antoine Winfield Jr. was in the dreaded walking boot after yesterday’s victory.

Today, Todd Bowles shared that Winfield, a guy the Bucs made the highest paid defensive back in the NFL, got injured in one of the final few plays of the game. That begs the question, what was he doing on the field?

Joe realizes the Bucs lost three defensive backs to injury in the game: Bryce Hall, Josh Hayes and Zyon McCollum. So perhaps the Bucs sort of had no choice but to play Winfield. But it certainly makes Joe take pause.

“He’s pretty sore. We’ll see how he feels,” Bowles said of Winfield.

Joe hopes the Bucs sit Winfield next week and let him heal up. The boot usually means an ankle issue (the Bucs haven’t clarified), and that won’t get better pounding all game on Detroits’ fake turf.

Bowles added that Christian Izien would replace Winfield if necessary.

Bucs defensive back depth going to be tested early this season. Let’s hope Kaevon Merriweather and Tyrek Funderburk are ready to contribute.

Logan Hall and Kancey seem unlikely to return this week. Hayes, Zyon McCollum, and Winfield are questionable at best.

  2. TF Says:

Like you noted, there was a zillion injuries to the secondary and he HAD to be on the field. It’s easy to second guess but the reality is with the circumstances and everything 100 out of 100 times Winfield is on the field. The bigger question is why didn’t we have either Funderburk or Merriweather active. That was the mistake!!!

  3. Jeff Says:

6 week injury. See you at 2-4, Antonio.

  4. Boss Says:

good thing todd’s one redeeming trait is picking and training DB’s

as to AW being on the field. Well, he gets paid to play football!!!

I am sure most players want to be in the game for stats reasons anyway.

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

    It’s a foot injury.

Come on. Hindsight is 20/20. He was in there to finish the game off.

Kaveon Merriweather balled out in preseason and Tykee Smith is a gamer. AWJ is a beast but we still got good players.

  7. BucU Says:

Looks like Kancey and Hall will have plenty of company on the sidelines next few games. Ridiculous.

  8. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I am guessing Licht is going to make it a priority to draft a few DBs next draft. We are going through them like hotcakes.

  9. Beejezus-belt Says:

If Izien plays safety who plays corner opposite Dean? Who is left for corner.

  10. Buc4evr Says:

Need to go outside for a few veteran CBs. Oh and sign Shaq back for insurance at OLB.

  11. Bucsfan Says:

Marcus Banks is ready to step in and step up. Banks is a wicked hitter.

  12. Joemaguire Says:

Izien, Mayweather and Tykes can all start for Winfield.

I’m excited for Funky Funkerburk to play. I want to see what he has!

  13. Allbuccedup Says:

Are there conditioning coaches on this team seems like we have a ton of injuries and this is only the first game.

  14. Buc off Says:

Jeff, who is Antonio? Let me guess, Atalanta fan?

  15. orlbucfan Says:

Whitehead will have Izien ready. Plus, I want the Offense and Special Teams to STEP UP!

  16. A Bucs Fan Says:

If Funderburk plays he’s going to pick off Jared Goff

  17. BucsGuy Says:

Secondary depth is certainly worrisome after week 1. Might just have to “pull the goalie” and put Whitehead and Izien back deep and throw a 9 man rush every play 😂

  18. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Jeez, didn’t we lose Sean Murphy-Bunting and Jamel Dean in the same game, Week 1 in 2021? What is it about opening week that wrecks our secondary?

  19. 2 thumbs up Says:

Why am I not hearing Tavierre Thomas mentioned in the wake of all these secondary injuries?

  20. Beeej Says:

Anyone know the % of peeps getting concussions and returning the next week?

  21. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Go call up Richard Sherman again

  22. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Beeej – it’s around 27%. The median time it has taken nfl players to make it through the concussion protocol is nine days. Zion has roughly a 1 in 4 chance to play next Sunday. It’s really dependent on the symptoms he experiences and if they persist. Generally, 60% of concussions heal within two weeks.

  23. A Bucs Fan Says:

    Zyon* my bad.

  24. A Bucs Fan Says:

It’s official. Antoine has a foot and ankle sprain and will miss at least two weeks.

  25. garro Says:

    Dang!

Taking an All Pro out of the lineup hurts but AWJs playmaking ability is second to none. I hate to say this but next man up doesn’t quite cover it.

    Ouch!

    Go Bucs!
