“He’s My New Gerald McCoy. He’s My New Barrett Ruud. He’s My New Gaines Adams.”

September 14th, 2024

Ian Beckles rolls up on a Bucs linebacker.

A Bucs starting defensive player had a decent game against Washington. But not in the eyes of a former Bucs offensive lineman.

Former Bucs guard and former popular local sports radio personality Ian Beckles took to his podcast “In the Trenches” and took Bucs outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to the wood shed.

Beckles has been a harsh critic of the former first-round draft pick for years. That has not let up with the dawn of a new season, perhaps JTS’s last in Tampa Bay (he’s in a contract year).

JTS had a sack on Commandos quarterback Jayden Daniels and Beckles openly scoffed at the play. In fact, Beckles believed it was an accident.

“You will not get praise from me until, as a rusher, you run through somebody,” Beckles barked. “Anybody can get a sack running the hump, running outside and the quarterback being flushed into him.

“If nothing was happening [to the quarterback from his blindside, Daniels] would have stepped up and everything would have been fine.”

In so many words, Beckles wants a glass-eater as an edge rusher and JTS isn’t that. Beckles did praise YaYa Diaby for his physicality.

Beckles has always had a Bucs starter for which he reserves harsh critique. JTS is his latest.

“He’s my new Gerald McCoy. He’s my new Barrett Ruud. He’s my new Gaines Adams,” Beckles said. “I always have one guy that I pick on.

“It’s not because it’s personal. He just can’t play football. He’s not a football player.”

Beckles bellowed how JTS took himself out of the play when he could have had Commandos running back Brian Robinson for a loss on Robinson’s seven-yard touchdown run.

“Go back and watch the [first] touchdown that Washington [scored] and tell me what Joe Tryon-Shoyinka does,” Beckles said.

Beckles, who is a trenches coach at Chamberlain High School in Tampa, compared JTS to one of his linemen. However, Beckles had praise for several Bucs, perhans none more than future Hall of Fame receiver Mike Evans.

“I’m going to stop saying ‘Mike Evans is going to fall off,'” Beckles promised. “I’m going to stop saying it. I’ve been saying it for six straight years. I’m done with it.

“I saw a route he ran early in the game, he looked like he was 15-years old. The touchdown he caught? He wasn’t open. He’s just a competitor and probably the best competitor the Buccaneers have ever had.”

That’s incredibly high praise when you factor in the competitors the Bucs have had this century including Rondé Barber, John Lynch and two of Beckles’ friends, Derrick Brooks and Warren Sapp.

Beckles did remark that Evans is beginning to age.

“He’s starting to look old — off the field,” Beckles said. “On the field? He’s still looks like Mike Evans the amazing football player.”

As for Sunday’s game with the Lions, Beckles understands it will be steep climb with all the Bucs injuries. Beckles believes the Lions are one of the best teams in the NFL.

If the Bucs just give the Lions a fight, Beckles says, given how short-handed they are at critical positions, that’s not a bad thing.

Don’t always agree with Beckies, but on the subject of the article and his closing statement – I couldn’t agree more.

  2. ATLBUC Says:

I think JTS had a good game. Any body but Jayden and he and YaYa gets 2 sacks each

Lions are good, but they almost lost last week to the Rams. Yes, there are some worries that it is at their field, Hutchinson/Goff, and our injuries. The coaches will have a plan. When the Bucs put up a fight, which they will, they can win this.

Evans is looking great! He is really taking care of himself too.

  4. PSL Bob Says:

I agree. I want a win so badly, but I’ll be happy if the Bucs are just able to keep it competitive.

  5. Permanently Moderated Says:

JTS is another example of the Bucs giving a player every chance to succeed. He has improved very little, if at all, and is a waste of roster space. Beckles is spot on.

  6. SenileSenior Says:

I realize that Ian played professional. I disagree him on Gmac. He worked his tail off and he had favorably comparable stats to Suh for several years. Also I think JTS pleases Todd Bowles for his play and that means a lot to me.

    Go Bucs! Bring Detroit down!!

I agree with Beckles 100%. JTS is a fluke. The OT he got the sack on has been waived 5 times since being in the league. He’s a scrub who made JTS look like a JPP. As a matter of fact, if u watch JTS previous sacks over the past several years, they were an act of luck n or being in the right place at the right time. U never see him make MParson, TJWatts, Hassan Reddick, or Chris Jones type plays. Hope folks don’t get beside themselves thinking JTS is gon be a game changer. He’s a bust.

Beckles is everywhere when he gets going. He’s on the radio because he has a gift for gab. Sometimes you hear from an NFL 9-year vet, then there are times his views are really no more relevant than our opinions at JBF. I can’t remember the last time he’s really given much of revelation about player that most of us were already aware of.

Regarding JTS, not one person on any of these boards think much of JTS. But he appeared to be one of the more effective linemen in the game against Washington. Daniels was itching to leave that pocket the whole damn game, and when he did, he punished us because we had no answer for him running. That being said, I give props to JTS, he closed in on him on that play and finished, and we damn near almost got the fumble as well. It was 1 of only 2 sacks on the day for the Bucs, and the only one from DE/OLB. We have an entire season left to go and it’s a contract year for JTS, I’m rooting for him because whether he stays or goes, we will be seeing the best he’s got to offer at this point.

Looking forward to tomorrow so that we can see what this defense can do when they can simply pin their ears back and rush a pocket passer without worrying about giving up chunk yards from a QB on the ground.

  9. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs can win if they score 30 points and force Goff into making mistakes
If Goff has all day, it will be a long day for Bucs

  10. Eckwood Says:

Senile senior your nice but Clueless and Nice and Clueless doesn’t win football games !!!

  11. Pewter Power Says:

Bucs really should try to make a trade with the Jets. I’m sure they see Braswell isn’t ready and may take a couple years and quite honestly could end up another JTS. Just because licht drafted him it doesn’t mean he’ll work out. They will be stubborn even if they lose to top teams

The top pass rushers won’t be available where we pick and he won’t use draft capital to move up. What is he trying to prove by not making a trade for a proven pass rusher honestly

  12. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I love Ian’s takes. I agree with all of his insights on players because unlike every commentator on this here website he has actually been in a locker room and knows what he’s saying.

  13. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Bruh, McCrybaby should never be included in the same sentence as Suh. Suh was and is a million times better than that kimono wearing clown. Not even close.

  14. teacherman-joe Says:

If he’s been saying that “Mike Evans is going to fall off for 6 years”

Then It proves that Beckles is a moron!

  15. ReeeBarrr Says:

JTS is growing. See what happens

  16. Rod Munch Says:

God he’s an idiot with bad hot takes.

  17. RagingBrisket Says:

How come his most recent podcast is Sept 3rd? Where did you listen to it?
