“He’s Going To Put The Onus On Himself To Overprepare”

September 10th, 2024

Richard Sherman weighs in.

A former Todd Bowles Buccaneer paid quite a tribute to his former defensive coordinator yesterday.

Ex-Bucs cornerback Richard Sherman (2021) hopped on WDAE radio to talk about the Bucs and more. He was asked to say what makes Bowles unique and successful, even in the face of a rash of defensive injuries like the Bucs had Sunday.

“Because he doesn’t make excuses and he works his tail off and he has his team so prepare,” Sherman said. ” … and the way that he challenges himself to get the right answers for these offenses and take pressure off his players. He wants his players to execute the plan, but he’s going to put his players in the correct position to get the things done to get turnovers, to get pressure on the quarterback. He’s going to put the onus on himself to over-prepare to understand their protections, to understand the way they’re going to adjust and continue to attack. And I had a ton of respect for that.”

The three-time All-Pro also lauded Bucs cornerbacks coach Kevin Ross for how great he is at injecting confidence in bench players at all times.

The Bucs likely will be down multiple cornerbacks, Antoine Winfield Jr. and defensive tackles Logan Hall and Calijah Kancey when they face the Lions in Detroit on Sunday.

Per the words of Sherman, Bowles will be 100 percent prepared for the challenge. That doesn’t mean the Bucs can overcome the loss of talent, but there will be a confident defense on the field.

This game will be a big big test for our beloved Bucs. A win here would swell their confidence. A close loss, though that sucks, would not be devastating. Go Bucs!

  2. Alanbucsfan Says:

The offense needs to be very good Sunday – 30 points or more likely needed for the win

  3. ATLBUC Says:

We need the running game this week to keep Goff off the field

  4. BucU Says:

How come old man Lavonte David is always available but the young 20 something
Calijah Kancey can’t seem to stay healthy for ten minutes since he walked in the door last year? Dude is a glass tiger.

  5. WilieG Says:

At least we have an offense that can score and take pressure off the wounded defense. Baker and Company may need to score 40 points if the D doesn’t get some players back.

  6. SlyPirate Says:

Joe, You don’t think CK or Hall will be back for Game 2?

The offense needs to score a lot of points to beat Detroit. Our OLB need to get a lot more pressure, too.

  7. SB~LV Says:

Gonna be a tough game even if the Bucs were full strength healthy.
The Lions DL and double trouble running back attack is still EXCELLENT

  8. richbucsfan Says:

Someone sees to remind JTS this is his contract year. If he played as well as he preens and shadows plays he would be All Pro. Game 1 review no change from last season. Same ole JTS. No grit, no anger…

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

GMC has offered to suit up and Mylou is available to step in at corner.

  10. Cobraboy Says:

Tough week on the road Sunday. I’ve still have some hopium, but it is the NFL, and they are the Lions.

  11. orlbucfan Says:

Sherman graduated from Stanford which is an excellent academic institution. He’s smart. He played for the Seahawks when they won the SB under Carroll. He was one of their top DBs. I always wondered if he would ever consider coaching as he’s set for $$life.$$ So, I take what he says about Bowles seriously. I still say it’s long past due for the Offense and Special Teams to STEP IT UP for once, and help the Defense by winning this game on the road. Go Cardiac Bucs!!

  12. Buddha Says:

Trust me Kancey wants to play. He has an injury. That’s part of the game. On an individual basis, it can’t be predicted. Look at Burrow’s. He’s missed two seasons but do you think the Bengals would trade him. Hell n.

  13. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

If Baker goes into Detroit and balls out to get the win – I will rename my handle Mostly Peaceful Baker Boi

    LFG

  14. Joemaguire Says:

Kancey needs to fix his diet.

The calf muscle gets hurt due to dehydration.

He needs to get on the TB 12 train. Ditch the Gatorade and sugar.

    And get hydrated and liable.

    Tom Brady baby.

  15. Larrd Says:

I am looking forward to seeing Funderburk out there. Bowles seems to love him.

  16. Let ‘em bake Says:

5-5 at the bye. Get there, and we should be playoff bound. Be healthy ( hopefully) at the bye. Get the injuries out of the way now…

  17. Woodenman Says:

A lot of Capt. Obvious comments on here we all know the situation the injuries, on the road indoors, the team (lions) . We are really going to find out how good we are. As Al Davis yousto say “Just Win Baby”

  18. Crickett Baker Says:

I’m just glad we aren’t facing the Aints this week. We have more than enough “accidental” injuries. Whoever is left needs to fight like the Furies.

  19. Bucfan1988 Says:

    Totally agree about Kancey!!

He needs to talk to Mike Evans about the TB12 regimen….

Mike was dealing with hamstring issues EVERY SUMMER in camp.
Once he got on that diet, those hammy issues I think might be past him.

    Just a thought 🙂

  20. BucsFan81 Says:

Hard to believe I am saying this because for the longest time Tampa defense has always been great and better than the offense. I really think this year the defense is a weakness and the offense is the strength of this team. We desperately need our hurt defenders back asap.
