Graham Barton: “Keep Hammering The Basics”

September 11th, 2024

The Bucs’ rookie starting starter offered insight into how far away he is from feeling comfortable at his position.

Considering how well Barton played in his NFL debut on Sunday (he was good in preseason, too) this was awfully encouraging.

“There’s about a million things that I want to clean up,” Barton told The Sick Podcast — Pirate Parlay yesterday.

Barton added that his core focus is on position fundamentals. Remember, he was only a center in college as a freshman.

“…Continuing to get the timing down and understanding the spacing. I think moving back inside, that stuff’s just a little different,” Barton said. “The timing of whether it’s passing off twists or people are playing in different areas. So clean up timing of things, continuing to get better with my hands and feet and just continuing to get comfortable at the center position is going to be vital for me. …

“Really for me, where I’m at — just got out of Game 1 — I gotta just keep hammering the basics until the basics are second nature to me.”

Barton said he’ll get more advanced in his learning during game weeks after he masters the basics.

Joe loves hearing about Barton’s steep learning curve, especially after fans watched him play strong football with the Bucs racking up 37 points on opening day.

How come PFF ranked him so low? It was 50 something grade.

  2. Gipper Says:

Really like his response. Ask any professional golfer what they continually work on and the answer is always: “the fundamentals.” Can’t get too much of the basics in any profession. Keep it simple and keep on working those simple things until they are second nature.

Ask that question while watching game tape. Heck, just go watch the film Joe used to show his case for why RW is not a good running back. Link Below.

Pay attention to Barton and who the guy is that tackles White or makes the first play on him.

Looked like a lot for Barton to clean up, yet we threw a 37 sandwich on the board. Washington’s D is not last years D. They were strong up front.

    Exciting times ahead!

    Barton was a good pickup.

@Wisecrack – I saw the same thing you saw in the article. It doesn’t make a lot of sense that the people who played football are touting him and making claims that he did great. Yet his analytics were not very good.

  7. Beeej Says:

Just saw Cody Mauch had a 67 pff, no penalties, no sacks, played every down. Probably his best game as a pro

I’m with ya for sure. I think the thing is, his floor is what we have today. I don’t hate that he is not the GOAT (yet).

  9. ModHairKen Says:

Barton looks huge. When he gets a few more years of weightlifting, he’s going to be massive.

  10. Crickett Baker Says:

He looks better than Hainsey did in his first try at center.
BTW, I am really glad Joe’s transcript took all of his “you knows” out. It took me 3 tries to watch his interview I get so aggravated.

    Luv it.

  12. JimBobBuc Says:

I though he played well except for a couple of twists where he was a little late after defenders got by Mauch.

I bet our OL takes a big step in week 2. Sixteen more games until the playoffs.

    Go Bucs!

We have some phenomenal athletes with great character. Knowing Barton can get that much better, as well as others, I’m not worried about possibly losing Coen once we see the finished product. OC’s could be drooling to coach for Tampa if that becomes the case. They really need to get healthy, it’s the one thing most of us are worried about I’m sure, but once they are, look out.

Think I’m gonna like this dude. No excuses no glossing over stuff.

He missed on a couple of plays kind of left Mauch hanging a bit.

    Go Bucs!
